Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

Oh I don’t know, we have the luxury of being able to look at her complete trajectory and I think she was pretty tough. I think it’s very difficult to accurately judge in yourself. I mean roll the clip of her appearance on the Carson show after she had her strokes, she was practically indestructible.

Dick Cavett was so lucky in his lifetime. To have interviewed hundreds of celebrities and all with such a casual, friendly demeanor. I was watching this interview and just fell into how casual the entire conversation was. Dick Cavett had a wonderful way of putting his guests at ease. Just imagine, sitting and talking the hour away with legends.

A clear indication that someone is overly concerned about what others think of them, is when they declare that they don't care what others think about them. The whole idea behind making such a statement is to effect someone's perception of you, that is to say.... how they think about you.

@Jarred Mello-Neyhart-May Johnny Carson...and the other tv interview shows back then. She didn't like dumb questions. Cavett always asked smart questions. That's why he was so good. Was the same with M Brando, K Hepburn, Orson Wells and other greats. They avoided the mundane.

Bette looks great here for 61 yrs old. this was filmed in 1969, there was no Botox or Juvederm . It was the au natural look. She pulled it off.

Amazing woman.... Her honesty, wisdom, confidence ring out true. I'm 58; love the great years - 30's, 40', 50', of classic Hollywood. Have no interest in anything over the last 30 years, really. I find it very interesting how today's youth have no interest in the past cinema. Bette, amazing woman, thank you.

And Idk if I count as a youth anymore cause I'm 29, but I'm a whole me younger than you and I'm watching this interview and interested in old films and media. So that's gotta count for something.

Interestingly, when I have discussed these old movies with younger generations, often I am told that they have no interest in anything "black and white." I've come 5o love "Mildred Pierce" with Joan Crawford. She deserved that Oscar. Be well.

With all due respect, I don't think she was confident in the least. She admits in this interview that she wasn't tough, but that she tried instead 'to cope'. Instead, her tragic, almost overwhelming addiction to nicotine/cigarettes -- and alcohol -- but mainly cigarettes, is what helped her cope. It also aged her horribly. She's only 61 in this clip, yet looks closer to 75, and that's with good lighting.

But as she admits -- finally -- in this interview, she WASN'T tough. She felt she had to try, but she wasn't. And her almost incredible addiction to nicotine is a testament to her weakness. She refused to quit even after her breast cancer and three strokes. That's addiction.

My 30's was the worst decade. Full of extreme trauma and fear. So no, it was not the best. 40's are turning out to be the best. My kids are old enough to look after themselves and I can now better look after myself.

I personally have been mersmerized by this actress. She was most versatile and extremely intelligent. I am thrilled that no one had any success in harming her s we would have missed the greatest actress ever from furtherb performing. I am certain that she was not easy to work with. Who likes a perfectionist who is demanding perfection from all around the set. She was a misunderstood genius among her coworkers. She was just plain better than the rest.❤❤

I love these Dick Cavett interviews....used to switch between him and Johnny Carson back then. I always thought Dick Cavett was brilliant in how he handled his interviews. Bette Davis was so comfortable here with him....and I do agree with her, the best age for a lot of women is 35...lol....wish Cavett still had a show today....most talk shows are awful now...

@@akrenwinkle off the top of my head Lauren Bacall found her disappointingly frosty at their first meeting and both Olivia Hussey and Celeste Holm found her unpleasant to work with. The funniest account of a meeting is to be found in John Fraser’s autobiography, Closer, about his encounter with her in London in the mid 60s

@@gerardmackay8909 In Bacall's first (as-told-to) autobiography, she wrote of a wonderful first meeting with Bette; she and her friend, also named Betty, were absolutely giddy after the meeting was over. When you wrote "detractors" I thought you meant a large contingent of critics and audience, not a handful or two of people. For example, Joan Crawford and Frank Sinatra have detractors all over these boards. After revelations about them, Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Spacey gained detractors.

@@akrenwinkle During the filming of Mr Skeffington someone tried to poison her and the LAPD were involved. The studio head confirmed 118 people worked on the set and the detective asked how many might have a grudge and the response was 117 (she was recently widowed, very erratic, aggressive and very volatile ). I’m a huge fan but I know she could be difficult in the way Barbara Stanwyck or Carole Lombard NEVER were. Bette was human with good days and bad days (just like you and I). I’m a huge fan and her unpredictability just makes me more interested in her. Do read the John Fraser book because unlike either of us he spent real time with her.

@@gerardmackay8909 The way I read it- I'm remembering as best I can - for some reason, Bette needed eye drops, and somebody sneaked something in them to blind her. It was in one of my Bette books. (I'm a big fan, too.) I hate to sound Clintonesque, but it depends on the meaning of "grudge." I can imagine a competitor like Miriam Hopkins holding a real grudge. I can't imagine everyone- with one exception- holding a grudge as that term is commonly defined... the A.D., those in make-up, lighting, sound, set dec, costuming, catering, grips, assistants. I'm careful about what I believe; when things seem too extreme- 117 out of 118- I dismiss it.

Bette was/is an American treasure; it's amazing watching her versatility in retrospect. From Regina Giddens, Charlotte Vale & Elizabeth I to Joan Winfield in the silly "The Bride Came C.O.D. - a fascinating genius superstar in every sense of the word. Davis fully deserved the recognition given her by millions of fans. If you want to see Bette sweet and noble without chewing any scenery, catch ALL THIS AND HEAVEN, TOO. She ain't Baby Jane Hudson in that one!

Just notice how different her gaze became after 1967: it's the year when Claude Rains died whom Bette loved so much. In an article I even read that their relationship was at times compared to that of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Just if we watch interviews of, for instance, 1958, 1962, 1964 - and then this one, it looks like some kind of light faded away from her gaze when Claude'd gone. It's heartbreaking to imagine that, especially, considering what Claude's daughter Jessica's told: "whenever Bette had troubles with a husband she would come and stay on our farm - sometimes for weeks☝". In Claude's bio book Jessica showed one of the messages Bette'd written to him where she calls him "always my love"😢

There is no room for movie stars in today's motion pictures. The only star in motion pictures today are left overs from by gone eras or animated characters in one of the many franchises out there. You might be able to be a star on the small screen such as Netflix or a Hulu.
