This song has such special meaning to me. In the 90's Aids memorial day was still a big and emotional thing (here in the Netherlands) we would shout out the names of our loved ones that left us due to the illness and at the end we would all sing this song together.......really sad memories but at the same time also not cause at least we were all together and could comfort each other...
I've seen Bette twice live. Her voice is one of the best voices I've ever heard. Records and Recordings don't do justice to her voice. Her performance in The Rose is one of the best performances on film.
Dereck, first time watching you and I really enjoyed it. Bette Midler is my favorite all time performer. She came along when I was in my early 20s and knocked my socks off. I've had the pleasure of being an extra in 2 of her movies and have seen her countless times in concert. I'll be watching to see what you do next.
First time I saw bette Midler was in the movie Divine Madness, was a double bill with the main event with Barbra Streisand. She does everything in this movie, she is amazing. I love The Rose, it's so lovely, so sad yet so full of hope x
I thought she held back slightly also, but her wonderful voice and fabulous presence made the Song as a warm caress 👍 and the outtro touched my heart sincerely👌 Thank you dereck, you’re wonderful! 👍💙😘Zane
While we are at it; Bette Midler and Celine Dion "Tell him". Also sorry for not liking all of your videos yet. I´ve had a big throwback with Abba. I really enjoy your analyses and of course also to rediscover music. Thanks!
New subscriber here :) Love your reactions :) I'd love for you to react to the Norwegian band Madrugada and their song The Lost Gospel. I'm Norwegian so no bias here lol. Keep up the great job you're doing and stay safe :)
New subscriber. Your reactions are a pleasure too watch. One off the nicest guys i have watched and reacted too. Could you please react to " Madonna like a prayer live blond ambition tour.
Dereck, that's not the way Bette first sang The Rose. I hope you'll listen to this version of it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zxSTzSEiZ2c.html
@@lamusiclover2264 I understand. I know that I personalize songs when I sing. But over the years, I myself have preferred the way a song was first sung when I heard it on a recording. I like to watch music videos. I just feel disappointed if my memory of a song doesn't match the later version. :)
@@granjmy There's nothing wrong with that. The original versions are often the best, but sometimes live versions can be better. I think singers get very weary of singing a song thousands of times and have to make changes in order to keep it interesting for themselves, and for their audiences who have heard them do it so many times. Often, especially these days when people lip sync, if people don't make some changes while they're singing it, they could very easily be accused if lip-syncing ( which I dislike).
Sje might have been nervous as it must have been atthe Oscars seen worlwide... Like many singers or acceptance speaches were messed up by overwhelmingness...
The quality of this recording is crap. It would have been nice to hear that choir at the climax of the song. It's totally heartbreaking in its beauty. The studio version is better than this one. 💖
