Indeed. The mental and physical turmoil of the character in that film was not easy and Midler was believable in every scene. That final scene was heart wrenching.
@@JorgePrietoNYC She gave one of the most powerful performances in film history and the Academy did an injustice to her by not voting her the winner. All due respect to Sally Field, (also a phenomenal actress in her role as Norma Rae) Bette put her heart and soul and guts into playing Janis Joplin, (literally the definition of heart, soul and guts) obviously not a part just anyone could play.
@@alicehenderson7983 i know right. Every movies she did back in the days bring you tears and laughter. But we know she is one of the best gems in Hollywood.
I don't know about underrated anything. Very successful in all those things. Don't understand what you are saying. The Rose is one of the great songs. Then there is this movie called The Rose, and the movie called Beaches.
FROM EARLY JANUARY 1980, A #1 HIT BY BETTE MIDLER CALLED. “THE ROSE”. I HAVE WAITED A LONG TIME TO HEAR THIS SONG SINCE THE OLD CASSETTE TAPE GOT WORN OUT. THANK YOU, BETTE. Kenneth Huang 9/2/23.
Not necessarily, Jennifer and I crooned the song our senior year outside Melrose Hall (the quiet place) at an ungodly hour and got applause. One thing I will give to Redlands. I still refuse to Och Tamale.
Losing a parent is the most painful saddest experience to have to go through I understand 😢 remember they are in a far better beautiful place and that's heaven 🙌🏼💙🙏🏼
Absolutely. She owns this song. Owns it. And such a beautiful song. The title is mentioned only once.. at the very end. these lyrics are simply beautiful with NO repetition. it has always been one of my favorite songs of all time.
You might also want to listen the songwriter’s original version. Amanda McBroom is a singer/songwriter/actress who wrote it for Bette’s movie. She has a technically more perfect voice, although Bette’s version exudes more passion. Also cvered by Barbra Streisand, Lee Ann Rimes, and Joan Baez. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fVVvB4CCto8.htmlsi=2SxHbTjr5AYbDmHq
As I’m sitting here in the cemetery crying after my dad had passed away last week….. I’ll always remember In the winter beneath the snow The seed that I plant will always become a rose with everlasting love for our loved ones.
I ditto the drive-in experience; however, I was 10 years old. “The Rose” - the movie affected me greatly and the song is just so beautiful. I prefer Bette Midler’s voice singing “The Rose” over Janis Joplin any day. I attempt to plunk away at my keyboard, as a novice, trying to do this song justice but I am not quite there yet. Thank you for your share.😻
Some say love, it is a river That drowns the tender reed Some say love, it is a razor That leaves your soul to bleed Some say love, it is a hunger An endless aching need I say love, it is a flower And you, its only seed It's the heart, afraid of breaking That never learns to dance It's the dream, afraid of waking That never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken Who cannot seem to give And the soul, afraid of dying That never learns to live When the night has been too lonely And the road has been too long And you think that love is only For the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter Far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed that with the sun's love In the spring becomes the rose
I've seen many women in concert. Bette Midler has the best voice I've ever heard. It's like glass......so smooth. Her performance in The Rose is one of the best on film. Heartbreakingly beautiful.
It's the performance before this in the movie ("Stay With Me") that is shocking and no one...NO ONE...could have played the role and given the same type of commitment/performance. For that scene alone she deserved the Oscar.
The magic that was to discover and listen to this woman for the first time, and in this film, to hear her sing this incredible song. I became an eternal fan.
This song is a moment with my mother, she passed away 18 years ago and this song was here favorite one. I still miss you mam I know you have peace now with dad and Michel my Brother in a peacefull place Just be pacient Maybee there is a place for me too ❤❤❤ but all though your'e not here your spirit and love are in my heart
My entire life I was used and abused. I never knew love, I did drugs and I drank heavily and horrifically. This song reaches to my deepest parts. It's meant to be the song played at my funeral entirely. The whole performance before the service starts
My Mother and I was a huge fan of Bette Midler and my mother told me when she was dying of Cancer in 2014 she wanted us to play this at her funeral and that's what we had done. I have to play this from time to time and how beautiful this song is but still makes me cry almost every time. The video was well put together and thanks for sharing this with us.
Omg this narrative just touched me I actually choked up a bit. Go with God and your memories of your mother. I actually live for this song since junior high school
Clara Jo Johns, I feel your hurt, I lost my mom 6 yrs ago, October 7th, still miss her badly, you never get over losing your mom, mine was 80, but still mentally sharp as a tac, it was heart & liver disease.
Clara Jo Johns, Bette lost her mom when she was only 34, it was right after the Movie " The Rose" her mom never got to see her famous as a movie star, I cried when I found out about it, she was telling about it in 1980, and began to cry, it was so sad, her mom died from liver cancer.
I'm sorry for your loss...... I too have lost a loved one (family member) . He was my mom and dad brother and sister, he raised me in this country all by himself.... Even though I still think about him every now and then and I get upset, very upset but time will ease the pain..... My uncle passed away in 2003....
Undoubtedly the BEST performance by a female lead actor in 1978. Johnny Carson had a great eye for talent and i know he loved Midler, she loved him too. She closed the last show for him.
Awe it was my daddy's favorite song.(he took his life in1982) I used to sing it for choir and sucked but my heart was in it it that counts. Haha. But it will always be my daddy's song.
I saw her at Lennys on the Turnpike in Boston Massachusetts before she was famous, and she blew us away with her talent, will never forget that night as long as I live.
I sure do miss the 70s, 80s and 90s. The music🎶 today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?
This was my sister Liz's favorite song. She died a few years ago from cancer. When I hear it, I remember what she was like when she used to sing along to this beautiful song. It makes me remember what she was like when she was young and healthy.
"The Rose" is a Classic Movie depicting supposedly the life of Janis Joplin ( and a few other famous Female Rock Stars of the 70's that many can think of that did "survive"). I have to say that Bette Midler was a "Top Notch" actress who played this role so greatly. Being A Popular "Rock n Roll" star seems to be difficult for many stars who seldom have any time to themselves once they have those "hit records", and being on call by Your Band and/or the Record Company would be a Great Demand. So, what about their personal lives and Love ? Ms. Middler does a class "A" job of depicting all this for us in this Movie. If You have never seen "The Rose", please buy a copy, and I will promise You that it will be in Your own private collection, "handy" to view and share with your Friends (Movie is intended for Adult Audiences)
John sutton, yes it is a great movie, the Academy cheated her out of the Oscar, she deserved it, she worked hard on it. I bought it recently it is great, I will be watching it every week or more, but not without a box of tissues, it is very emotional, Bette is so emotional in it, you can't help but cry yourself.
I think people that say they don't like her, really don't know her as a person, they need to watch her interviews, you learn a lot about her on them, she is about as tender hearted as can be,
