Hey guys welcome to a brand new video. Today we will be taking a look at 2 very interesting aircraft and comparing them! This will be our first comparison video where we compare a counter-rotating turboprop plane to a regular twin engine. Our first aircraft is the The Piaggio P.180 Avanti EVO which is one of the newer variants of the Piaggio P.180 aircraft. Next is the Beechcraft King Air 350i which is the newest variant of the proven successful King Air 350 aircraft.
The Piaggio P.180 Avanti is an Italian executive transport aircraft with twin turboprop engines mounted in pusher configuration. It seats up to nine people in a pressurized cabin and may be flown by one or two pilots. The design is of three-surface configuration, having both a small forward wing and a conventional tailplane, as well as its main wing, with the main wing passing behind the passenger cabin area. Avanti EVO blends the very best of Italian style, peerless craftsmanship, and intelligent thinking to create an aircraft that stands alone for its values. With greater range, faster climb, reduced fuel costs, a lower noise footprint, added safety systems, and a more luxurious cabin, Avanti EVO is yet another step forward. Along with that Piaggio has an innovative new maintenance program that can keep costs under control better than ever, and Avanti EVO stands alone for intelligence and elegance.
In October 2008, Beechcraft announced updated versions of the B300 series, the King Air 350i, with improvements to the passenger cabin. Beechcraft claims that the noise level and overall comfort of the King Air 350i are now competitive with those of light jets. On The official Beechcraft King Air webpage this is how they describe the aircraft Best of the Best. The Beechcraft® King Air® 350i surpasses its predecessor’s high-caliber performance with more payload capability and range, and a quieter interior with standard Wi-Fi. The King Air is the world’s most popular business turboprop aircraft - a title never simply granted, but earned again and again with continuous enhancement over five decades. The King Air 350i. True to its legacy of innovation. The King Air 350i has many configurations holding up to 11 passengers!
The flight deck of the King Air 350i features Collins Aerospace Pro Line Fusion Avionics Suite with full touch-screen simplicity. On the other hand the Piaggio P180 Avanti EVO has the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21
Piaggio Aerospace tasked propeller masters Hartzell with producing a new pusher for the EVO - a five-blade scimitar design in aluminum that not only makes it the world’s fastest production turboprop but also reduces cabin noise by 20%

I fly An Avanti for my living. I also have many king air hours. The Avanti significantly outperforms any King Air. It easily makes its book cruise speeds, maximum altitude and fuel burn. Ours actually does a bit better than book. It is significantly quieter in the cabin and there is less vibration. Also the maximum cabin pressure is higher in the Avanti, providing a more comfortable cabin. The Piaggio needs more runway as it’s rotation and approach speeds are 15-20% higher. Both of these planes are wonderful machines, but I’ll take the Avanti and it’s great flying characteristic hands down. Capt. Richard Hartman

Although hourly cost is similar, one would have to take in account that the P180 is 33% faster (or King 350 is 25% slower)... So at the end, operational costs of the Piaggio would be 25% less, or the King 350 33% more aprox.

It breaks my heart really. Such a beautiful brilliant aircraft yet Piaggio is in Receivership totally insolvent. Fortunately they are a SPA and Italy is great for holding businesses up as long as possible. They have updated the Evo according to the website. They would be wise to hire a cutthroat American PR Ad agency. Like you said, they have the product, all they have to do is market it. A more powerful engine option as well as a North American test flight trip around the country at an FBO near you would do wonders. Maybe Christian Bale could give it an unforgettable name as he did for the P51? "P51, Cadillac of the sky!" Say hi if you know the reference.

With it’s speed and flight ceiling it’s main competition is jets. An when you compare it with jet aircraft in its class it loses. With range, payload, and landing versatility. King Air understood this and made their planes customizable for customers to add additional wing fuel tanks enable transatlantic flights without stopping in Greenland or Iceland. They pay attention to payload and increasing the number of passengers the aircraft can carry as to light business jets. This aircraft would need to increase range to 3000 miles, without sacrificing performance in order to compete with the light jet market. King air beats them on versatility and after market options to customize and improve performance according to end users specifications. These options do not exist for the EVO.

@@Naija4K like most commenters on here I don't own a plane. But in my book it is the 180. Flying continental U.S. it meets my dreamed needs. You make valid points but for me, If I were to travel overseas I would rent / charter a jet that had full capacity to address that mission. But the 180 can get me my family and maybe a couple of friends anywhere in America I care to.

The Piaggio is not better in every way. It is not better in sales or time to market. Those two things are probably more important than the slight margins it has in performance and price. The Beta max was better than VHS. But Sony Beta max lost to the VHS market. The Apple Mac OS is better than the PC Windows. But the PC has the lion's share of the market. Apple only has 12% of the market.

Avante Maximus! Piaggio should come up with a plane called the Piaggio Avante Maximus! which would be 4 ft longer, 1 foot 4" wider and the interior cabin height would be 6 ft 1" this would accommodate a full size 6 ft sofa that underneath the knees would flip out about 8 in to make it a nice comfortable bed and this would accommodate a 18-in wide to 24 in wide galley food prep area which would include a microwave and refrigerator freezer compartment that would free up space in the cabin and they should sell it for $12,995,000 this would accommodate up to nine passengers including the lavatory seat. Make the engines 10 to 15% more efficient than the Avante Evo and make the cabin also about 10 to 15% quieter with an extended flight range of between 600 and 800 Miles over the Avante Evo. They also should make the ground clearance about 8" higher, that would give the plane a higher ground clearance and also make the plane look more substantial - taller and more competitive with the Jets that it would now compete with. This particular model would sell through the roof nobody would want a King Air or anything close to that, this would be a total alternative at lesser of a price and more cost beneficial than a jet any day of the week... This would attract private purchases and charter services like crazy... all the advantages of a jet with those sexy rear Pusher propellers!....Avante you're missing out on big sales! Avante Maximus ready to fly for 2025!

Beechcraft's curious disclaimer leaves a lot to be answered for. Piagio's use of laminar flow technology makes for significant performance difference as Captain Richard Hartman points out in comment below. Beechcraft engineers obviously din not apply newer design technology to the fuselage, and a close look at the forward area around windshield clearly reveals awkward transitions, certain to generate turbulent airflow. Every airplane is a compromise, but the Piaggio engineers sacrificed little in order to achieve a lot of extra performance.

IMHO The Evo is head and shoulders above the KA. The KAs are very overrated. Piaggio should add the larger fuel capacity and bigger wings to the Evo, like is on the Drone version. More range, shorter takeoffs and slower landing speed (I would think), would make it more favorable to buy. Then Piaggio needs to increase Parts inventory and expand the service network. That should greatly help sales. Then come out with a larger Jet version with 4000+ NM range. The Fuselage design is spot on for efficiency. Funny that Otto Aviation Celera is copied from the Avanti design. Again just my opinion

The Hammerhead version of the Avanti has much of the interior space devoted to fuel tanks, but that would not work for the general aviation version for obvious reasons. Perhaps they could find some more modern and more efficient engines, and make sure they are auto-throttle capable so they can switch to Garmin avionics? I read that the laminar flow aerodynamic design on the Avanti can only be scaled up a small amount in size before it no longer works. Same with the Celera. But doing even that would likely price it out of the category. The Celera is going to be interesting if they keep the price down, especially the larger model. It will be a paradigm shift for the airline industry.

The P180 should be EVERYWHERE! People's distrust of pusher configurations keeps on keeping on. With the speed of a VLJ vs a King Air with less fuel burn it should be a no brainer. The P180 recently reached a million combined flight hours. It's no longer a question regarding performance and reliability. Another factor is that range can be extended in economy cruise. A big negative is the power. If they used the 1250shp versions and reverse thrust nobody would buy anything else. Another 800 shaft horsepower would set it alone in climb out as well as takeoff and landing distance. The extra speed doesn't do much in short blocks because of the climb. If they put 1250s on the wings, it would climb out like a jet. Piaggio, if you want to take away some of Beech's market share, put 60 alphas on the wings. It wouldn't do much of anything to the economy. A pt6 is a pt6, Honeywell 331s would get better economy ;-)

The P180 is a much later design Just looking at the size of the main wing and the difference in aspect ratio. Pushers are a bit more efficient. But if you are not picky, you can save big with the King Air by buying a used C90 or 200 much cheaper and trade all the steam gauges and have the new STC ed engine and prop mod done and still have lots left over from $8 million. I stay away from the 360, for the biggest change I suspect is adding 10 to the number 350 for marketing purpose ?

The extra 100MPH is real nice,but with a track record from all of the King Air, and Beechcraft in general, I'd pick the King Air. I also am living in the USA and would assume servicing would be quite easy compared to the Italian plane ? I'm 100% Italian American, so I love anything Italian, especially my food. And KA's have the fusion avionics now.. which are really freaking fantastic. In the end it's not going to matter. Piaggio will be out of the game in a few years anyway.

My opinion (not a "high time" pilot (maybe only slightly over 13,000 hours) and having landed MANY, MANY King Airs, various biz jets, gliders, seaplanes, Helos and also the Piaggio hundreds of times, I have to say that the Piaggio DOES require a little more attention on approach/ landing and roll out than the King Air series (though nothing hyper demanding/superhuman or whatever) but then driving a Ferrari requires a little more attention than does a Buick, huh?
@ericchen6096

On paper, Piaggio is a much better plane by a large margin. But Piaggio has a problem of reliability and inadequate service network. That's why after twenty something years of service, very few customer would buy them. They are now left dying. If you can build a plane with really good quality and people can really depend on them, customers will keep buying like Pilatus, Honda especially after a few years in service. Just take a look at the sales figures each year. then you will know.

The P180 is vastly inferior in a very important spec for the typical usage of aircraft; full fuel payload. Despite being an 8 passenger rated aircraft, a payload of 1150lbs makes this closer to a 5-6 passenger aircraft w/light luggage. That’s not competitive w/KA350i & PC12 NGx. The service infrastructure too is vastly inferior to Pilatus and Textron. Those factors alone have killed viability of an otherwise innovative aircraft making substantial foothold into mid-range charter market.

@MichaelM-to4sg
@MichaelM-to4sg 4 года назад
When you compare the operating costs and performance of KA350i, it’s no wonder the PC12 NGx is taking over that market and parent company Textron has developed the Denali, albeit under the Cessna brand. Given those operating costs, a VLJ is faster @ similar operating costs. For shorter missions where speed may be lesser factor, a PC12 NGx is no brainer as the wise choice. I doubt anyone is considering anything from Piaggio given their financial status. Their support infrastructure around most of globe is entirely insufficient for most operators compared to Pilatus & Textron.

Michael M : no doubt that the PC-12 is a great aircraft. But in many countries, single engine aircraft are prohibited from flying at night or even IFR. That’s a huge restriction. Not to mention they must always remain within gliding distance to land....in SE Asia, this is a show stopper too.

OK...so you DO show the operating cost per hour, but that is NOT truly meaningful. Basically the fixed costs will be roughly similar, but the COST PER MILE (either situate or nautical or even kilometer), when compared for the two aircraft will tell you more than the cost per hour. Having flown some of the first Piaggio Avantis in this country (not a lot, but somewhere around 1100-1200 hours?) and most of the King Air series--- 90, (100 Garretts only, not Pratts), 200, C-12, U-21 aircraft (but NOT the 350i---), I can not directly compare these two aircraft, but I can say when you look down at the 200/250/300 series King Airs as you pass them, they APPEAR to be going backwards due to the (approximately 100 knot----OR MORE) difference in speeds when compared to the SLOWEST of the Piaggio Avanti series.

The Piaggio P180 has the same operational cost of the King Air 350. The difference between both is, at the same time of flight, one hour, you can fly 400kts on Piaggio, on King Air only 300kts. Another video by someone that Obviously doesn’t work Directly in the industry. If YOU are paying the bills, the KA is the Hands-down winner. The P180 is a maintenance and upkeep financial drain. Getting parts is ALWAYS a problem and to add insult to injury, the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) on P180 Line Replaceable Units (LRU’s) is Orders of Magnitude higher. Also, you say the operating expenses the KA are greater than the P180 is LUDICROUS. If all you say is true, WHY DO SO INCREDIBLY FEW P180’s exist in small to mid-size flight departments? COST/RELIABILITY/VALUE and PAYLOAD is the Cryptonite for P180 operators. The P180 is Sexy and Fast. Other than that, the KA 350i is a proven performer that company actuaries AND pax always appreciate.
