I've been pretty vocal in the past AGAINST live streaming for churches. Here are some constructive ideas from my own church to show how great online church *can* be when we do it intentionally - rather than just rebroadcasting what's happening in the auditorium. ✅
@lazzaisaac4950

Any tips for hybrid services? Trying to be intentional with addressing those watching from home, but also engaging those in the building?
@prochurchtools
@prochurchtools 3 года назад
My recommendation for you would be to identify "crossover" elements or techniques. Ways of doing a segment that would serve both in-person and live audiences well. The challenge is that the needs of each audience are very different. Try your best not to slip back to just giving your online audience the leftovers. One practical thought - churches have been using pre-recorded segments in their live services for a very long time. Well before the pandemic. Examples of this would be video announcements, sermon bumpers, etc. So what if we pushed that a bit further? Maybe The Pre-Show is pre-recorded. And the announcements. And service transition. But the worship and preaching are live. That would give you the building blocks to create an in-person experience and online experience that perhaps serve both audiences well.

Our Church has gone from no online presence to firstly having a pre-recorded "in Brief" each week during COVID to having live streamed service each week. This would have been MUCH harder without your RU-vid content so THANK YOU VERY MUCH ! God Bless you & your ministry.

I appreciate this Brady. We were going to launch in a conventional "large launch" model this Fall before COVID. We launched online services on Easter and then shifted to having a portion of our launch team in person at my home for a hybrid watch party/small group in the summer. Now, we are doing portions of that live (preaching, offering etc) but our worship vids and other elements are still pre-recorded. We are streaming all of that through ProPresenter 7. I appreciate the fresh ideas here. We are small and just starting out and I need all the inspiration I can get, especially that last discussion slide! Great stuff as always.

@prochurchtools

Right now it's just about creating systems and structures that will allow for both to exist. Sometimes there is crossover content. Often there isn't. No magic pill. Just about expanding your output capacity. And taking this pandemic time to develop the workflows that make you most efficient.

Love this! My church is starting a weekly digital experience that will be separate from our live experience just like this. Great ideas for ways to make it more engaging and personable. I do have a question as someone who wants to get better at making motion graphics, what or who (whom?) do you recommend for learning After Effects?

My standard answer to this is always RU-vid University :) Just start working that search bar. Start with an "Intro To After Effects," then dissect individual techniques, and start putting it all together.

I hear what you're saying about the announcements. Every week for our online stream we have a voiceover reading whats happening each week while each announcement slide comes up on the screen. It literally takes 4 to 5 minutes each time. Even as the one putting it together it makes me sleepy lol. What can we do instead of 5 straight minutes of that? My boss doesn't see a problem with it but I would love a change.

Thanks for this Brady, always appreciate the way you share your expertise with the local church. I see that you have both a live service at Central on Sundays and the Online service option- so you're creating both every week? And Bill is preaching a live service and a recorded version as well? Does an online viewer see a Live Stream Sunday morning? Or what has previously been recorded for Online Church? Also, do you have a video about promotion/reaching more of the unchurched community? Or will excellent quality lead to more word-of-mouth promotion? Are Facebook ads worthwhile in your opinion? Sooooo many questions...thanks for your help :)
@prochurchtools
@prochurchtools 3 года назад
1. Facebook Ads are great - here's my walkthrough guide on how to do them well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bGl8B_PO_Ow.html 2. We try and use elements in both live services and online church when they make sense. But we also don't force it. So there's no hard and fast rule and it's always evolving/changing with the current landscape. It wouldn't be out of the question to be live in church and see the pre-recorded sermon Bill preached. Nor would it be out of the question for him to preach more than once.

I think these are all great ideas! I'm wondering what you think the advantages are doing this over intentionally including online as an element of the in-person service. If I were watching online, I'd want to see the actual in-person service because I want to know exactly what the church is like and exactly what I could expect if I came in-person. I can definitely see the benefits of being able to edit in post, but I could also see that bit about your pastor singing working just fine if he did that live. (Obviously, not every example would work out that way but.) Part of this is a personal preference, but then, we have also been trying a bunch of things online (similar to your suggestions) and have seen no improvement in retention, and pretty much no improvement in any numbers (likes, shares, comments, and engagement of any kind). What are your thoughts on the perspective that people might want to see the in-person service before attending in-person? To follow up, we are also trying to do other things *outside of the weekend service* to teach and accommodate the online experience. Things that are geared more directly to online audiences during the week.
@prochurchtools
@prochurchtools 3 года назад
It's certainly complex, Wesley. A few thoughts: 1. The easy fix for those wanting to "preview" what a service at your church is really like is to create a standing welcome video like we explore here - this is MUCH more powerful and flexible because it lets you show what church is like from when you park to when you leave (not just the preaching and music): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z4XS7ZLfzRA.html 2. The great tension here in online church is doing what church folks want vs. following the best practices of digital content. And this is a tension you need to manage. But for me, I always want to create digital content that has the potential to reach more people disconnected from church - than cater to church folks.

There are lot of good points in this video. I do wonder if a sermon that is exclusively done for online will encourage folks to stay home, rather than attend when they can. Also, and this is a VERY small criticism, but I had to fast forward through 2 1/2 minutes to get to your actual instructions/tips. I get that you want to do a proper intro, but 2 1/2 minutes is too long, IMO.

We have been doing a prerecorded and edited service for 34 weeks. It has been a lot of work to record and edit and post produce a whole service, much more than the work I did to just prepare for them in-person (non-online) worship we had before. We are starting back in-person and will live stream that service because there is no way we could do both a pre-recorded service for online and a live in-person service. I had hoped this video was ways to design a live in-person service with a digital audience in mind. Any adivce on how to engage with online worshippers and in person worshippers simultaneously without doing two weeks worth of work each week?

Brady - great stuff. If I'm finding the right place, it looks like your church is measuring views by the hundreds and sometimes thousands. What is the bottom end of viewership that you would put in this much creativity? For example, would you do all these extra things if your church was getting 20 views instead of 200? Asking for a friend, of course. ;-)
@prochurchtools
@prochurchtools 3 года назад
I hear you, Brian 😇 The numbers are all relative, right? There's always someone that has more views than you. Always someone that has fewer. I always try to approach my videos the same way and do my best regardless of numbers. And I don't think any of these specific online church ideas are big church or small church-specific. A personal example, I published a video last night on TikTok. I woke up this morning and it had more than 250K views. And got me more than 7K new followers. But I didn't do anything different on that video than the previous twenty I published. And I'm glad more people saw this video, but I always give my best whether this video gets 100X my normal views or not.

I'm having a hard time translating this to a small church context. There's no way we could pull this off w/o a team completely devoted to scheduling/shooting/editing. What are some of the key systems and schedules you have in place to make sure all these elements are taken care of each week?
@prochurchtools
@prochurchtools 3 года назад
1. We don't record full new worship sets every single week. Sometimes it's just one song. And we create a library of options to go to. 2. Not every idea is applicable for every church, but The Pre-Show, The Post-Show, and The Sermon are all just talking head shots or a still image slide that can be done by anyone. 3. It's important to remember that these are examples from a single church. I included them because they illustrated what's possible - but the bigger idea of this video is to intentionally create *FOR* digital audiences, instead of serving them a second-rate experience. The ways of doing that will/can/should differ for different contexts :)
@RangerGrant

@@prochurchtools Thanks for sharing your insight! It's definitely got me thinking about how we can apply this to our setting. It's a live stream for us. We use the Premiere setting on Facebook and RU-vid to host a live stream using re-recorded material. It's my preferred way of doing a live stream because it's more flexible, more accessible, and offers more room for creativity. You *can* do all of this live as well (except for the worship from home stuff), it just requires more gear and volunteers.

These are all great ideas for “online church,” but they seem to have little to do with “better church live streaming,” which is the title of the video. Live streaming any event (it seems to me) means showing the live event, not showing a different, pre-recorded event. You used the “watching a sporting event from home” analogy in this video... and I can’t imagine someone tuning into their team’s game would be satisfied with a pre-recorded version of a game that isn’t the actual game being played that day. Again, I think these are all great ideas for online church, and I may try to adapt 1 or 2 of them for our small church livestream... but they’re not at all what I expected based on the video’s title.
@prochurchtools
@prochurchtools 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment, Rich. Just a couple thoughts, many churches are live streaming using pre-recorded video content. RU-vid/Facebook afford this with their "Premiere" functions. For the end user, it's the same - a live stream. So we've been using these terms synonymously because it varies from church to church. Some host pre-recorded live streams. Some rebroadcast a live service. Others do a little bit of both.
@RichSchmidt
@RichSchmidt 3 года назад
@@prochurchtools - I get that. I guess I'm just questioning whether it really is perceived as "the same" by the end user. In my mind (and I think in the minds of viewers), there's a difference between an event that's recorded "live" and then shown later and an event that is pre-recorded, edited, and not even pretending to be live. (The summer Olympics, for example, rides the line between the two. It starts to feel a bit hinky when it's clear that they're rearranging events and it seems like the commentators know what's coming before it happens.) BTW, while FB and RU-vid provide similar tools for "Premiere" and "Live" events, I think it's telling that they clearly differentiate between the two.
@RichSchmidt
@RichSchmidt 3 года назад
Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way about the term. Maybe most folks are using it the same way you are. I just wanted to give you the feedback, in case others similarly come to the video expecting something different based on the title. Keep up the good work!
