See the how and the why of what we're doing now to ensure our food plots produce forage that's super attractive to deer and our strategies to hunt these plots throughout the season. For 16 years we’ve worked to improve the habitat and nutrition for white-tailed deer at The Proving Grounds. We’ve had proven success with getting scrawny Ozark deer to grow antlers and increase body weights that are above average in our area. These increases are simply a bi-product of healthy deer. By improving the native browse and adding high quality forage through food plots, we have enjoyed great hunting opportunities. When we plant fall food plots, we wait until there’s adequate soil moisture before planting. This is important if your planting then hunting public or private land. We use the Buffalo System to establish and maintain food plots. One of the principles of this soil health improvement system is to ensure the ground is always covered with both living and decaying and vegetation (mulch from previous crops). We never disc/plow and have minimal soil disturbance. This system conserves much more soil moisture than systems that include discing and/or plowing the soil. Therefore, using the Buffalo System requires much less precipitation to be productive! It’s like irrigating but much less expensive!
The Buffalo System isn’t a formula that can be used once and instant results occur. It is a scientifically sound system of forage management that will result in improving the soil’s moisture holding capacity and capturing nutrients from the air and soil. In addition, it attracts and benefits deer and other critters! This is an easy win - win. It absolutely has been a game changer here at The Proving Grounds. Remember, big antlers start in the dirt.
