Do lighter wheels help with highway economy? Obviously they do in the city. But I keep seeing mixed things about highway. According to epa ratings on car models with different tire sizes, the smaller and lighter alloys still get much higher highway mpg. While random Reddit posts say heavier wheels keep inertia up and help at highway speeds. So confused
Wheel weight itself matters little for highway efficiency, but smaller wheels and narrower tires can easily result in improved aerodynamic, which is a real factor for highway efficiency. But keep in mind though, small aero improvement only matters to vehicles that already have good aero. Vehicles with trashy aero (AKA SUV and truck) won't see much measurable benefits.
Yes lighter weight is better for hwy mpg's. Imagine peddling a bike on level ground with ultra light wheels versus very heavy wheels. You will be working harder to maintain speed with the heavier wheels.
how much weight did you save, I'm in a similar situation RN and I have weighed all four rims and tires of my car and they are 269.8lb I saw a set that could save me 85~90lb total, but I heard that it's useless?
@@dubba07 Damn, in my case I will be saving 20~22 pounds per corner, sheesh the car might fly away 😂😂 You don't need run-flat, all you need is a fix a flat kit small air compressor and a plugger.
I put 18.5 fast rims on my 2009 x runner. Tire rack say 5 percent for 3 lbs. 13.5 lbs x 5 =22.5 percent increase milage. Still testing seem be improvement highway, know find out about city.
