I think Stan is 17 yrs old here. He won Australian idol when he turned 18 yrs old, since then he has gone on to refine his art and is now an accomplished song writer, storyteller, actor and entertainer/Singer. He wrote and produced the Music video I Am for the movie original. He has been through a lot in his life and I think you can hear it through his songs, should you continue to react or follow him in the present and going back as far as 2009 when he won Australian Idol. He thought he would never be able to sing again after his brush with Cancer, when his stomach was removed with all its complications, he had to retrain himself to sing. Glad you connect with Stan as an artist and a good human being 🔥👍
Aha for all you haters out there should see the full production version on xfactor this is an unplugged version and I think he did amazing for an 17 year old. Or ask him to sing it now he will blow you out of this world. ✌️
Thankyou Britt! He was only a young kid at 17 when he did this for idol. Singing Prince live in a tv studio with a little ole guitar doesn’t do him justice. The audio version has the electric guitar in it and is better. Since doing this much happened to him health wise. He no longer has a stomach and had to learn to sing again. When Stan sings covers it always done his way . Never tries to imitate cos that ain’t Stan. He has evolved 1000%. Today his look is different his music is different. Stronger, better. It’s Stan ❤
Baby Stan. Of all the versions to choose, this one only gives hints of how good his recorded version is, his idol performance of this song, is tighter!
Better than Prince? No. Prince made a masterpiece with this song and while many will sing it and put their own spin on it, they will only be adaptations of the original. Stan Walker is a talented artist and this was him early in his journey, I like his interpretation of Purple Rain, it showed that as an artist he was hinting at greater things to come but I don't think for a second that by doing this song Stan thought that he would be equal to, or better than the muse, no, I think Stan was paying tribute to one of his musical heros and it should not be viewed as anything more than that. As an aside Cory Henry (Snarky Puppy) also does a version of Purple Rain with the Metropole Orkest which is also a favorite of mine.
I am of Māori descent as is Stan I am a huge fan of Stan however I believe Prince sings hIS songs there ain’t no one can do it better. Long time fan of PRINCE here
This is one a fantastic cover of Purple Rain but no one can touch Prince PERIOD. There's not even a debate i love Purple Rain's vocal simplciity yet challenging vocals. Purple Rain doesn't need a bunch of yelling and vocal runs, it is perfect the way it is. Great job from this man & Prince would be so proud watching ACTUAL musicians cover his music but there isn't a person on the planet that can do Purple Rain like Prince. Not on vocals & not on guitar. Great job to Stan Walker tho!
Stan music is awesome. The big change is from him having cancer, now he lives with no stomach. New Zealand has huge respect for Stan. Watch the doco on Stan and you will see him and his struggle.
Stan Walker looks so different these days because he had his stomach removed due to stomach cancer. There is a wonderful documentary you can find on RU-vid about his journey through it. ❤
This was in his late teens and before his stomach cancer. After having his stomach removed he had to retrain himself to sing. I believe he went from a wonderful singer to an amazing singer. Massive transformation in talent

No doubt Stan will be saying that there is no one better than the master himself too ... And at the tender age of 17 what we are watching is a practice run and he did a better job of it on Ozzee Idol ... For me his younger voice is a bit stronger than after his BigC op ... Nah. Good but Prince version all day. Prince sends lightning down your spine when he sings this song. Not to take away from the fantastic performance of this young man, very well done.
Honestly when I had to learn this song I didnt enjoy prince's version, cuouldn'f find myself vibing or singing with him Also de guitar solo in the studio version (Stan Walker's) is soo lit.
Try some music by YES one of the greatest progressive rock groups of all time. You haven't reacted to them at all. Some good ones include "Roundabout", "Close to the Edge", "The Gates of Delirium". "Awaken", "Turn of the Century"... Loads of good ones. I'll subscribe if you do a YES song and so will many other YES fans.
There's certain artists where it's just disrespectful to ever ask if a cover is better than the original. Prince and Whitney come to mind. Even if you think it, dont say it.

Not even close. Something that upsets me is that they call Michael Jackson the king of pop. Prince had more talent in his pinky finger than MJ. The only instrument MJ could play was a 12 year old skin flute.

I don’t know who this artist is. Never heard of him. But , this was just bloody awful. He sounded like he was desperately trying to create his own auto tune using his own voice. He clearly doesn’t understand the essence of the song, nor does he understand that using an acoustic guitar reduces the need for volume and pitch by the singer. Awful. Just bloody awful. If you want to hear a better version, look up Bruce Springsteen’s version that he did to open a concert a few days after Prince passed away. Much, much better and Bruce does not have the same vocal range Prince did. Edit- I see below that this artist re-did this song in the studio and it was apparently better. Dear God, I hope so.
