Shrimp and broccoli in garlic sauce is a classic Cantonese dish. It is super healthy, delicious and It takes about 15 minutes to make.
To marinate the shrimp
14 oz 400 grams of Shrimp
1/4 tsp of salt
1 tsp of paprika (Amazon Link - geni.us/k19xa)
1/3 tsp of black pepper
2 tsp of vegetable oil
To make the sauce:
1/2 cup of water
1/2 tsp of sugar
1 tbsp of oyster sauce (Amazon Link - geni.us/nmsF8)
1 tbsp of soy sauce (Amazon Link - geni.us/XhhnS)
1/2 tbsp of hoisin sauce (Amazon Link - geni.us/qTdtVX)
1 tsp of dark soy sauce
2 tsp of cornstarch
Others
2-3 tbsp of vegetable oil to stir fry
12 oz 340 grams of broccoli
8 cloves of garlic, diced
1/2 tbsp of ginger
A few red dried chilies (Amazon Link - geni.us/Ksb7RQ)
2 tbsp of water
Instructions
Use paper towels to dry the shrimp then season it with 1/4 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of paprika, 1/3 tsp of black pepper, and a drizzle of vegetable oil. Mix well and set it aside.
Cut the broccoli into florets. Some people will throw out the stems. Let me share a wonderful way to use the stems. Peel the skin and cut them into quarters. Pickle them just like how you will pickle cucumbers. You will be surprised by how good they taste.
Dice 8 cloves of garlic and 1/2 tbsp of ginger. Optionally, cut open a few dried red chilies to spice up the dish, you can also use chili flake if you want.
Before we turn on the heat, let’s put the sauce together: 1.5 tsp of cornstarch, 1 tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 1/2 tbsp of hoisin sauce, 1/2 tsp of sugar, 1 tsp of dark soy sauce, and 1/2 cup of water. Mix well.
Turn the heat to high and heat your wok until it is smoking hot. Drizzle in a few tbsp of oil and swirl it around to cover the bottom. Toss in the shrimp. The wok is super hot. You only need to stir the shrimp for a couple of minutes and they should turn nice and pink. They are not completely cooked through yet. The inside is still a bit translucent. That is the point you want to take them out. Don’t worry, we will cook them further later.
Make sure you tilt the wok to leave the oil behind. We will use that to stir fry the vegetables. Turn the heat back on medium and throw in the garlic, ginger, the optional red dried chilies, and the broccoli. Toss for a minute or 2. Add a splash of water from the side of the wok. Quickly put on the lid to trap the steam so it cooks the vegetables through. This way, the broccoli is stir-fried then semi-steamed, which tastes so much better than just blanched broccoli.
Pour in the sauce. Introduce the shrimp back into the wok. Toss for a couple of minutes or until the sauce is thickened. And you are done.

Thank you for watching. Just a little bit info about my condition. I have been trying different arthritis medications over the last 2 years and hope to find one that works for me. During this trying period, I have to take Prednisone to help with the symptom. It messed up my appetizer. I feel hungry all the time and I eat 3 times as much compare to before. I had to cook lots of vegetables and low-fat meat just to fill up my stomach and prevent me from eating rice and noodles. Because I am Asain, and I am constantly wanting to eat rice and noodles. Especially I am testing and cooking all the time. So it is very difficult. Well, below are some of the recipes that worked for me, you can check them out if you want. I too have a condition. I am what doctors call a "fatso." I am now on a strict Atkins diet, since that has always worked for me, and it's the only thing that can break me from my carbohydrate addiction. I am going to try this recipe, but I will use a sugar substitute instead of the sugar. It looks great.

I've really enjoyed trying out Mandy's different recipes, especially this one! One of the things I've noted she really has done her homework putting these recipes together, as far as the amount of ingredients that will fit perfectly in the wok without over crowding it, and most importantly the flavor profiles. I'm learning! The only thing I did differently on this recipe was to add about a 1/2 tbsp sesame oil and tossed it in right before adding the sauce. I like VERY spicy food so I doubled the amount of chili's, split and de-seeded them, and soaked them in the water (warm) the recipe calls for and then added it. It turned out delicious - and HOT! If the top of my head doesn't sweat it's not spicy enough for me!

First of all Mandy, I wish you the best in finding a solution for aforesaid health issues. I've been loving shrimp and broccoli for over 40 years now. Not to be presumptuous, but I think that's longer than you've been in this world. But it's because of you, I was finally inspired to finally make this myself. Since watching this video of yours, I've been making and enjoying this dish for over a year now. I've cooked it for my wife, friends and family in Copenhagen, Stockholm and New York. And everyone, everywhere just loves it just as I! And I owe it all to you Mandy! This and other recipes of yours has definitely upgraded the quality of life for me! Thanks a million!

Love your channel and I have become quite proficient in wok cooking since my wife purchased your wok through the Amazon link last Christmas. This will be another recipe that will be a favorite. As for the arthritis, many of us deal with it every day and sometimes the pain is worse some days than others. Be thankful it could be worse. I'm 65 and had prostate cancer 21 years ago, a kidney removed due to a tumor 8 yrs ago, and 4 bypass open heart surgery 6 yrs ago. I would not trade my experiences with these issues. I saw the hand of the Lord our Creator within these events and the strength gained overcomes the daily struggles. Arthritis is a pain for sure but it reminds me, there are those who have much greater ills that they struggle daily with. Thank you for sharing your talents and yourself. I tell everyone I talk to about cooking topics about you and your cooking channel. Keep that beautiful smile, it lifts my spirit every time I tune in. Big Shweet

Like many people, I have gained weight during the lockdowns in Australia. I am on a cortisone puffer for allergies. My problem is that I simply love rice and I don’t feel like I have had enough if I didn’t have rice, pasta, roti or bread. As we are coming out of the lockdown, I hope to correct my diet. Good luck to everyone experiencing health problems. Stay safe.

I've just subscribed to your channel because this looks so good. I'm a 62 year old who cant work anymore because of my arthritis. I've never taken any medication for it because I never believed it would do any good. Theres no cure for arthritis. In 3 more days I'll have completed another 20 day fast. This is how I keep my weight under control because I dont get much excercise. I use to feel bloated and overweight all the time. I had stiffness in my neck that went on for a couple of years to where I couldn't turn my head completely to the right or left. I had to turn my whole body. I never knew what was causing it. I thought it was going to be a permanent condition. I was also 30 pounds overweight. So one day after completing a 30 day fast the stiffness in my neck had completely disappeared.

Hi Mandy, I made this recipe twice but without a wok. Both times the sauce was runny even when I cooked for a couple of minutes. I added more cornstarch and it thickened better. I also added a little more sugar to my taste. Next time I want to double the sauce because it’s so good and it will make it easier to eat with rice. Thank you for your recipe 😊

Unfortunately I have been in a terrible accident (Yes it was a motorbike crash - I discovered your channel while I was in hospital) and am in a lot of pain so it is difficult to stand up for long periods of time, so the egg drop soup was quite an effort, but when I get better I'm going to go crazy cooking your recipes, they look so delicious! Hope you are getting better, Kasei. Yeah, I had a foot injury, and it fucking sucks. I hurt my left heel on 3-28-2021, and it's taking forever to heal. I couldn't walk for a good while, but now, I'm more able to walk again. I was so scared that it wouldn't get better, but I've found that nerves take a long time to heal. And, it's Nov-2022, and it's still got a tingle in it. And, I walk like a freaking old man and look crippled, but hey, at least, I can walk. Right? Anyway, Tony, hope you're getting better ... Poe

Well Thank You Poe, whoever you are. It's nice to get such a reply. Truth be told, my right kneecap got broken in half, and my pelvis fractured both front and back and both my legs just below the knees got lacerated down to the joint, and I was in hospital 2 and a half months, and also got a blood clot in my lungs 8cm long while in hospital, so all the docs thought I was a goner at that stage, but I miraculously managed to survive it and am still alive to tell the story.

I was watching several other videos to get an idea, but I chose this one because of the ingredients used for the sauce. I still blanched my broccoli because I prefer that texture, but oh my god. I don';t know if I was hungry as heck, but when I finally finished plating everything and took a bite I literally screamed "OMG". If you've ever seen the anime Shokugeki, that's literally what happened. The amount of flavors that bursted into my mouth. I could only rate it with 3 stars because of the black coating issue. Since the coating is not scratch resistant, each time when you use the metal spatule cooking the meal, the coating will peel off little by little, and that is why when you use the paper towel to clean the surface, you may see the black stuff on the towel. Some reviewers said that this is fine, but I don't want to take a risk to feed my family with it, so I decided to fully clean the wok up. I used the wok to boil the water with vinegar twice and clean the wok with scrub-sponge in between until it was no more coating left. After that I did the seasonings again and now there is no more black issue.

I made this tonight and it was about the best shrimp and broccoli I've ever had! I love shrimp and/or chicken and broccoli, my favorite Chinese food! I didn't have hoisin sauce, but added some sesame oil. Next time I'll use chicken. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Just tried this the other day. Now, I don't especially like broccoli, but I love shrimp. I must say the combo was so good with just the right amount of seasoning, I went back for more broccoli! My mother would be proud of you, getting me to eat my veggies.

Great video Mandy. Thanks for sharing. I love stir fried shrimp. I will add some cornstarch before the initial fry to add some crispiness. So delicious. And thanks for the amazing wok. I use it for all my stir fry dishes. Happy Cooking, UB

Thank you for all of your recipes Mandy. I would love to have your recipes in an actual cookbook one day. Perhaps you can one day do a Kickstarter to fund the costs of publishing a cookbook with your most popular recipes. I am sure it would be very successful and that most of your viewers would be very interested in it.

Thank you for this recipe. I changed a lot of it by having steamed vegetables and frozen shrimp instead but still works I also don’t have other sauces but only teriyaki and soy sauce still works with the cornstarch. It’s quick and easy food I can eat after work.

My mom has been battling the arthritis/prednisone condition for years. It has taken some time but she has learned what she can and cannot eat. I think a modest amount of weight gain is totally normal and to be expected. I wish you well

Mandy, you must be working hard to disguise any arthritis pain you have because it is not noticeable. And you look healthy to me - unlike the way my friend who takes prednisone looks. I appreciate your cheerfulness, and your tips for cooking well. I pray you find relief from any pain. We will all stick with you!
