Man if you ever get chance to try out Minidsp products do check SHD as a standalone DAC/Preamp instead of just a DSP. That be crazy. I think now it also Roon Ready now so it be interesting.

So impressed with the direction that Technics is going. SU-G700 was on my short-list but was missing some of the features that are in the GX.... man if they did a blend of the 2 with the amps/meters of the 700 and the streaming/HDMI/App capability of the GX-70 it'd be THE PERFECT modern piece with retro flair out there at any price.

That little 1/4" port of the front of the Technics is something special too. I've never heard my Focal Clear Pros sound better than when plugged into the GX70.

Really strange me to that Technics hasn't developed a version of their Audio Center app for Android users. Android use is 70% of the global market (and I'm one of those users). Stranger yet is the Technics SU-GX70 offers Chromecast Built-In (unlike the Yamaha RN1000A). I don't understand why any company wouldn't follow-through and offer apps for both mobile platforms due to the risk of alienating current/future customers.

There is an android app... It might just miss a couple of features that the iOS app has. Android app has Space Tune, but might a have a couple fewer options.

@@anthonystephenson7659 Thanks for the correction. I was under the impression through some forums and videos that Audio Center isn't available for Android. I see now that it is available but that they're talking about the missing app features used to have full benefit of the SU-GX70. Although, if I bought this receiver as an Android user then I'd still be in the same place...disappointed and mad that Panasonic/Technics hasn't made available all the features for my phone as they did for Apple users.

@@BryanRuby Yep, most reviews don't really make it clear that there is an android version available. It's a shame the android app isn't the full featured version... Sonos are guilty of this as well. I think these tech companies assume anyone who can afford high end audio also probably buys an iPhone. Frustrating for us android users.

I decided to give this a try largely due to this review, and I’m glad I did. Sound quality is sublime - and a huge step up from a Sonos amp (no surprise). As the cliche goes, I’m hearing things in my favorite tracks I’ve never heard before. The nuanced little details that come to life with this amp make it such a fun listen. Happy to report it’s been driving my 8ohm / 89db tower speakers with ease. I find I prefer the space tune measured correction with music, and with movies I like the thicker sound I get with space tune set to “wall”. All in all I’m very happy.

Wonderful presentation as always -- I love the way you approach audio with the passion it deserves. Your descriptions of the product features are on par with the best sportscasts -- the natural cadence and communication style really bring your reviews to another level. As for Technics they're worth every dime. I bought a Technics MASH CD changer way back in 1992 -- it still gets used every day.

I read that Technics worked hard on getting a clean HDMI signal before implementing it. They found there was too much video noise riding along with the audio HDMI and finally found a way to defeat it right at the input on the SU-GX70. They should now be using it on all future products. I wonder what other makes just settles on letting the noise infect the sound or are even aware of it.

A very intriguing looking integrated. For me room correction is an absolute must in my next amp as my room and speaker placement isn't ideal. I wonder how the correction compares to Roomperfect on the Lyngdorf TDAI 1120, which seems on paper to be more advanced. A really helpful review, thanks both!

Good Morning and Happy Sunday! Thanks for your hard work on this review. I love the clean look of this unit and the fact that it has so many features (including room correction). I was surprised by the power rating (30w) for the price, but there is a lot to be said about clean power! I especially appreciate that brands are starting to add room correction as standard fare to their products.

Tricky decision here. In Australia the Yamaha R-N1000A is $2300, the Technics SU-GX70 is $3200 (!!!) and the NAD C399 (with BluOS module) is now $4000... And the R-N2000A is also $5000.

I agree with you about the names vs. numbers; names are so much more memorable, letters or numbers can be added to distinguish between iterations or feature sets; but names are so much better. Think ‘signature’ editions.

Thanks for another great review. And based on this review, I bought one! Given Technics gave 15% off with a trade in, it was a no brainer. And everything you say is true. The level of detail. The amazing stereo image. The bass. Oh, the bass! All at a reasonable volume. And for anyone who doubts the value of room correction, I was shocked at how bad my room was and the difference Space Tune made. So much so, it’s given my speakers (Linn Ninkas) a new lease of life.

⁠⁠⁠@@robinsonbrandjust to add some spice to the value of Space Tune, I heard a few of my “go to tracks” through the G700 and Mission 770/Wharfedale Lintons before leaving the store. So what a surprise, with all technology in the GX70 engaged, my system at home lost nothing discernible to the heavy hitters in the store.

Great Review! I have a pair of 87dB KEF R3s - would the GX-70 still extract that full sound, especially at low listening volumes? Or is the bigger brother, the 700 (or perhaps something M5SI with even higher published figures) more appropriate for lower sensitivity speaker? I am not after SPL but just a full sound with defined bass at low volume. It's hard to guess current and control from the published figures alone :)

I purchased Heresy IV because of your enthusiasm for them! I still own them, love them and use them in the living room with the NAD c700 . I replaced them with La Scala’s, love them more than the IV’s. Do you think the Technics could replace my McIntosh c50 preamp and mc352 amp, my WiiM pro streamer and Denafrips Ares 12 DAC and sound just as good? I am tired of all the clutter in my rack! For vinyl I have a VPI Prime with a MC Ortofon Quintet Black which I think I could replace with a 2m Black no problem. For SACD I have the Oppo UDP 203. I would miss the blue meters, but not the clutter. Thanks for your thoughts, I think being a recovering Audiophile would be great! Thanks John

I use su g700 mk2 and bluesound node n 130 . Great sound and very capable amp. I have few vintage amps as well and love them all but technics is a great come back . Interesting product for sure . Im now want to get Sugden a 21 se signature because i relly enjoy that pure calss A but technics will stay with me for longer !😊

Hi Andrew, thanks for the incredible content both of you constantly deliver. I bought a Pioneer VSX-LX505 receiver and am looking for 5.1 speakers here in Europe. I watch streaming movies/series and listen to rock concerts. I checked: a) B&W 603 S3 b) Monitor Audio Silver 300 7G c) Dali Opticon 6 MK2 Which one would you recommend? Do you think they match to the Pioneer? Or would you suggest anything else? The Polk R700 are hard to find here. I would add the corresponding bookshelf speakers of each brand and a SW. As a candidate for my 2.0 HT the GX70 might be a better fit, if it’s room correction could compete with RZ50. My only concern is that the RZ50 might be a better option power-wise with my Wharfedale Lintons…?

If you plan to use the pre-outs for a sub (or two) are they are they controlled by the Space Tune correction? I'm debating a few options of simplifying down to an integrated but after getting my subs dialed in with Dirac Live on a miniDSP flex indefinitely don't want to lose all control over them.

If I wasn't using a vintage reel to reel that needs line-in + line-out and wasn't in love with the Technics SU-G700 Mk2 I would be all over this. Silver? Check. All the connections and features a modern user might want? Check. I'm hoping some, no all, of this goes into a future SU-G700 Mk3. Or give us a SU-G800 with all the bells and whistles. Now to find a place in my country where I could listen to these with the Wharfedale Lintons.

It has a line in. Could the headphone jack act as an output? I mean it should work. Just not sure of the quality of the sound. But it’s not like you can’t buy it, and send it back if it doesn’t work. If you live in the US anyway. Not sure about other places. ✌️

Thank you for the great review(s). You had two highly positive reviews on the Sonus faber Lumina II and the Pro-ject Speaker Box 5S2. For use in a den or even a living room/dining room would the SU-GX70 drive those models well? Curious as to the volume push you need (over 50 or 60) or would detail sound good at moderate and low volume. I currently use a Sonos amp on Sf Olympica Nova Wall speakers for the living room and the sound is fabulous - although component connectivity is limited

Love your enthusiasm Andrew , great review ! . What about compering it with Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 ? It sound there is allot of similarity’s, spec and features between the two , the Lyngdorf is also all digital amp with RP for auto EQ, DAC, streaming etc…did you tested it with sub integration for stereo listing ? I own the 1120 with Q acoustics concept 300 and just love the match.

That’s interesting. I was wondering how that amp would work with the Q Acoustics Concept 50’s. And they’re very similar to the 300’s AFAIK. And easier to drive too. 🤔 I’m actually very tempted by the 300’s too, just on looks alone. Especially with the Q stands they make for them. What a looker!!! ✌️

Hello Andrew, I have been using the same separates for 25+ years now, which includes an Onkyo M504, and Adcom tuner preamplifier... right now i been using a cheap HDMI ARC extractor going from my 2022 Samsung TV to my preamp for audio into my 2 channel system... my question is do you think brands like the Technics model SU-R1000 , Yamaha model A-S3000 and even Luxman integrates will eventually (like in 5 years) incorporate the HDMI ARC connection into their high end integrated amplifiers? i would like to upgrade to my end game system down the road, so i wonder if i should just wait it out...

I agree about names. One of the reasons I noticed Paradigm speakers back in the 90s was the fact that they had names (Atom, Titan, etc.)

Unrelated - will you guys be getting the NAD M66? Very interested to know what your opinion will be as your the only reviewers whom I trust to make honest reviews. If you still have the miniDSP SHD, man that’d be a great comparison, with and without Dirac engaged. Obviously with DLBC the advantage should be with the NAD if using subs. I also have an 8300XP and KEF R speakers, so you could in theory be testing out my exact proposed setup! So very keen to see if the M66 cuts the mustard with you both?! :)

Very tempting...thank you for this great review! Now the question is that their next amp will probably be the best thing ever so maybe it could be good to wait a little more ha... But yeah i could be happy with it I'm sure or in a perfect world, get that for the bedroom and the Yamaha as-2200 for the living room as i keep hearing it's still far above their current products... Interesting. Im more of a separates guy but i can appreciate any all in one device that does it right. I see some complaints on the price but if you consider everything you get, its not a bad price. Streamer, Dac, Amp, Room Correction, and the most wanted input...HDMI Arc. Nice small profile too.

I am so happy that you two reviewed this unit. I am going to have have to save some serious cash for this integrated amp because I think that it will be perfect for vinyl and cassette. I miss my old Shure V15 cartridge and it would be great to listen to a modern replacement. Do you have any recommendations as to cartridge and turntable on a 1k budget?

This is the turntable used in the video bit.ly/3o8zC8i which retails for $499. If you using this amp with this turntable you don't have to go crazy with fancy-fancy cartridges. You could get an Ortofon Blue here bit.ly/OrtBlue and be well under $1000 and have a great vinyl setup!

As an SU-G700 owner (thank you Andrew 👏🏻)… I’ve found my missing streamer component. I’ve attached a Fiio R7 and now I get Apple Music in full high-res (track dependent obviously). Since it’s Android based I get all the lossless and hi-res I can shake a stick at and I don’t have to rely on airplay2 (which is limited bitrate) to get the Apple portion at least. 👍🏻 Love seeing Technics going for the gold with an all in one and if I had to do it again this might give me pause… but the meters!!! 😭

This is a awesome review! I'm wondering, what's your opinion of how this compares to the Yamaha R-N2000A? Both sonically, and feature wise? The Yamaha was my goal amp that I've been saving for, but it's double the price. Is the Technics really as good for half the price? I currently have some Focal Chora 826's. These are pretty easy to drive, and I do like the slightly brighter sound of them. Do you have any thoughts on which of these amps might possibly pair best with these speakers?

I'm kind of curious as to your thoughts about the Technics SAC 600? It's a very similar feature set including the space tune room correction, the only thing truly it lacks is the HDMI port, although for me personally that's never been a huge concern, particularly when there is a optical input. Also has the same streaming functionality and the same amplifier technology, except for a reduction of power output versus the GX70. Although it does gain a built-in CD player, and from what little reviews have been done of the c600 people equally comment as you have done on the prowess of the phono stage.

As a Forte owner who has gone through many amps getting the right sound, I'd look to a nice tube or hybrid integrated with s separate streamer and dac. Will give you alot more versatility and (I'd imagine) sound quality unless you prioritize hdmi and room correction for TV over music. Those are some expensive speakers to be running with something like this when there are so many amazing options to consider for LaScalas. Analytical amps don't typically sound good with horns from my experience. Maybe look for something a bit fuller and warmer

With the La Scala's sensitivity rating, I'm sure this 30watts would sound close to 100W. Just keep in mind what he said about how revealing this amp can be, and know that the La Scala's are also super revealing speakers.

It looks sharp. It's main problem is that when you get to that $2k price tag there is a lot quality out there. I'll probably go for the "less versatile" Buchardt i150 for that money. Too many features historically translate to less in the future.

Hi Andrew and Christi. I I always watch and love ur videos. I have a conundrum. I have a Denon 1600. I started off using CSS criton 1td speakers. The amp and speakers are warm. It was a no-go right from the start. It had no HI-Fi at all. It really sucked. I had never thought of using some other beginner speakers. The Polk Tsi 200’s. It was night and day difference. I had some HI-Fi. I know I need Bright speakers to hear the right sound. Would the Revel M16 be the right speaker for my system to be synergistic? I was even thinking of the RPM 600m. I need ur advice badly. Thank You.

The Revel M16 are not what I would call "bright". The 600M MKII from Klipsch would maybe be better with the Denon, or the new B&Ws here bit.ly/3qS46Ru

Sounds interesting, I know it's a big difference in price, but I wonder how it compares to the RN-2000A from Yamaha. I've pretty much decided my next system will be that and the Martin Logan XTF 100s, but keeping an eye out for anything better coming out. I got my Naim Uniti Atom right before your review of the Marantz Model 40N. 😢 BUT at least it was $3,300 then, not $3,800.

We still have our Heresy IVs but did not use them with this amp unfortunately. The amp is SILENT (unlike the Naim) so I have zero hesitation in recommending it with high sensitivity speakers like the Klipsch.

While I enjoyed the review, the most interesting part for me was the explanation of the 15K peak on the Yamaha speakers. I have an older Yamaha HTR with YPAO and I could never understand why when performing a calibration (regardless of the speaker) it constantly inserted a treble peak of 6db at 16K. Fortunately, the Yamaha PEQ allowed me to take it out manually.

eArc is not pass through, just sound from a TV, where TV does not have RCA jacks.

I thought Yamaha RN1000A was it then I watch this. Ugh. But I am looking at Q Acoustics 5040 and with no Sub output using the the B speaker terminal for a sub will reduce power too much. NNow the RN2000A is on sale $3200. I like it has better instrument separation than RN1000A. Is that a no brainer at$3200. Or is there a better integrated maybe with external streamer at that price point. Pairing with QA 5040 or ML Motion F20

The Yamaha RX-A8A is doing me justice with my headphones but I’m hoping for the development of more amplifiers with DACs which can decode surround sound codes both through speakers and the headphone output. Actually, what I want is a headphone amplifier that can pass HDMI video to the television and pump out lossless audio codecs through the headphones. If you don’t think it’s possible then you didn’t own the Denon X7200WA. They figured it out in 2015. And yea, with a Sennheiser HD800S it really was amazing pass-through of surround sound into a left and right channel. Oh and my dream headphone amp, sure, a couple of posts for your speakers too. I’m generous that way.

I think the NAD M10v2 has a phono preamp with Dirac but it’s currently $500 more. BluOS is a selling point as well. Two good options. The Technics is surely a contender. Love the look of the Technics.

The m10 does not have a built-in phono stage, and even if it did I would still reckon that the technics built-in one is far superior. I mean have you actually heard The built-in phono stages in NAD's latest integrated amplifiers, spoiler they're not all that good, passable is the word i'd use.
