The problem with Better Safe Radio as I see it is that it is a one man shop out of Southern California. If you are new to the radio world and you actually want to talk to someone about making an informed purchase, this would not be the company to deal with. There is NO phone number on their website. When I requested a phone call I was told they don't offer any free consulting time but you can email or chat your questions. If I told my customers that from a sales standpoint I couldn't pickup the phone and walk them through the sales process so that they are getting exactly what they want, I would be out of business. I also don't understand why Wouxun would only partner with a one man shop for their USA distributions. I am new to the radio world so maybe I am missing something here, but when you are new, its always nice to be able to actually talk to someone so you can make an informed decision.

It does sound like you're a bit new Greg. I spend nearly every waking moment assisting customers, and to do that more efficiently, I do it via chat and email because you'll realize after being into radio for a while longer, that Hams and GMRS people like to yack and yack and yack. I do call-backs when they are absolutely necessary, but I can help way more people when I multitask on multiple platforms. I'm not the only Wouxun distributor, just the only one specifically co-designing radios for the SHTF prepper market. Oddly, you requested info from me on WhatsApp and I emailed you exactly what you wanted, along with email responses on your inquiries on the 12th, 13th, and the reply on the 14th. I did publish my phone number when I wasn't so busy, but with hundreds and hundreds of backorders, I think it's important to spend time getting the radios out.

Jason, Just a quick note. I enjoy all of your broadcasts...in your latest video you were incorrectly quoted as saying "the license fee for a TEN DOLLAR license will be going to $35 dollars." I'm certain you meant that the fee will be going from $70 dollars to $35 dollars for 10 years. All in all, another great video. Keep up the great work. Eric A. Gidion (WRMS760 on the GMRS side.)

Just a couple clarifications… The Priority Channel Quick-Jump is a manual, not automatic feature. It lets you long-press the BAND key to jump to your saved priority channel with one click. Also, BSR has been around since 2016. :)

@@HamRadio2 No worries. I'll have a better description of everything before we launch. I like the idea of a triple-watch feature though. :) I guess when you're scanning and have the priority scan on, you do have triple-watch, but this new feature is really designed (with EmComm or SHTF in mind) so that someone can have their home repeater, or an emergency channel, or maybe their local PD/FD (if analog) so they can quickly jump there, even while scanning. I think some ops will find it very useful, while many will never know it exists. ;) Thanks Jason!

I know this video is a year old but i just ordered this radio. Gonna be my first "Real" radio. Have various SOC Baofang GMRS radios that have worked great for me and able to hit my local repeater easily but cant wait to play with this one.

If the channel has a freq between 160-161, and listed as "AAR xxx", those are American Association of Railroads. These are usually simplex freqs on FM Narrow setting.

Indeed! Unfortunately, many of them are going digital, but there is still some analog traffic on those freqs in some areas. The new pre-programming has some updated AAR channels now also, mostly for the railfanning community.

Ability to charge the radio without the charging cradle is a feature I would suggest.

Yup, I'm working on that (along with IP67) for the future. It will likely require a new design though.

That’s certainly a possibility, but so far, Wouxun has refused to even create an AA battery case for this line, so while I’ll certainly pitch this to them, I’m not sure if they’ll bite.

Understood. What they need to understand is that its costly to “kit out” a radio and once you are started with a model series it might be a deterrent to switch model series for a new feature or two. The KG-UV9 series is popular and the popularity will grow especially with the new models additions coming out. I imagine there are a lot of us ready to buy a battery with external charging capabilities, I am certainly one of them. The IP67 rating is understandable if that requires a new model series but the more compatible it is with other accessaries the more likely it will sell

BSR sent me some antennas by a company called "Smiley Antenna" that I am currently evaluating. You could also look at Nagoya and Signal Stick antennas.

Better Safe is a good company and Wouxun makes a great radio, I have a UV8H and a 935G. This one looks like unless you are into scanning, it has more bells and whistles than you need. My thoughts on GMRS is keep it simple.

It sounds like the KG-916 GMRS is right up your alley. :) Many preppers (several thousand of them so far) want GMRS with scanning and dual receive/scanning, etc. though. ;)

GMRS is the new CB RADIO. Jason, you are too young to remember , CB radio was a licensed service. I got my l CB license in 1976. It was $5.00. CB was 23 channels AM/SSB. In 1977 we got 40 channels AM/SSB. This year we got FM as well. Now AM/FM/SSB. In 1983 Licenses were no longer required.

@@christophersmith1155 , which is actually a blessing since GMRS only has a few channels. I’d like to see more GMRS channels; although, admittedly hard to justify today since it hasn’t really taken off (yet?). Perhaps even at the expense of some of them FRS channels.

Maybe you can help me, I like the police scanner ability in the UV9G Pro, and have had a police scanner in my home for many years, I live in the Reno Nevada area, but for some reason I can not find the police dispatch frequently for the Reno Police Department, is there any way you could help me with that ? if you have a book or website with that info can you pass that frequently number onto me . . . To program the KG-UV9GX, on BetterSafeRadio states you can use Wouxun program software for the KG-UV9P Plus or KG-UV9D. Since both are on the Chirp can you use Chirp for the KG-UV9GX?

Yes on the True Dual Receive, and even dual simultaneous scanning, but cross-band repeating is not legal on GMRS, so that feature has been disabled in the firmware. The new UV9PX (Ham version) will have a cross-band repeater, just like the previous UV9P and UV9D versions.

Can someone tell me what "Extended 1.25m “220 HAM Band” RX Range", means? Does that mean the KG-UV9GX has a RX ham band that the KG-UV9G pro does not have? . If so, is that the only RX ham band the KG-UV9G pro is missing? How important is the 1.25m 220 HAM Band?

Yes that means you can add the 1.25M Ham band on RX. I don't believe that the UV9G has this option. How important it is depends on your area. 220 is popular in some places but not everywhere

You can't do APRS on GMRS, but the Ham version will accommodate APRS with a 3rd-party BT adapter. It works well. The UV9GX will be just $20 more than the previous version, so $199 before the affiliate discount.

I don't know how helpful the wide band receive coverage is going to be in the future because there's a heavy push for digital modes of varying kinds even when it is not necessary. On top of this the lack of ability to trunk track.

There are still many services and agencies using analog. True, many agencies are converting to analog, but until there's a superhet DMR with great fallback analog, this is the way to go. Also, things like NOAA WX and AM AIR Band (along with MURS, GMRS, Marine) are likely to remain analog for quite some time, so there's plenty of future in an analog-only radio.

The primary advantage to Digital is the ability to go with narrower channels; and therefore, more channels. More GMRS channels would be nice (when it gets more popular).

Still, even if they want a digital radio service, they should make an open source technology that works like the Motorola DTRs on the 900mhz ISM band. And make radios that have both the 26-27mhz CB and 900mhz built as one radio to increase it's popularity.

@@jeffkardosjr.3825, my experience (Coast Guard and Civil Air Patrol migrations to P25) with digital is significantly improved audio quality. However, the greatest disadvantage is that it relies heavily on a good quality signal, most often achieved by major infrastructure investments by municipal first responder agencies. But when operated in remote areas, where signal quality is marginal, digital is either there and very clear, or not at all.

@@TimS0208 Analog usually just has a slight hiss. These AMBE/IMBE digital audio codecs don't have as large of an audio frequency range. That might not bother some people, but to others the way digital builds a voice creates something along the lines of an uncanny valley effect. Then while the volume levels may be more uniform for one digital user, it still can differ from user to user. Reception interference issues of analog get masked, but digital has it's own problem with going R2D2 where the voice falls apart in a different way.

Desktop chargers are nice but I agree that charging ports on the battery to allow mobile charging without the cradle would be very nice. The larger capacity Boafeng radios have this feature.

That is in the works for a future radio model - probably won't happen for the UV9-Series, which is 9 years old. there is a USB charging cable though, but it still uses the charger base.

Wouldn’t allow edits to add that a PD Charging port would also allow recharging from small Solar/Battery Packs (aka Solar Generators) for extended off-grid use.
