Riding the Rails is a 1938 Fleischer Studios animated short film featuring Betty Boop and Pudgy the Pup. Although some sources claim that this film was nominated for an Academy Award, it does not appear in the official Academy Awards database.
Director: Dave Fleischer
Stars: Jack Mercer, Mae Questel
"The exciting adventures of Betty Boop's dog, Pudgy, who insists on following his mistress when she goes downtown in the subway. He gets on the train, and then his troubles begin. After almost disrupting the train service, he is flung off, and is forced to walk the tracks back to the station, with trains whizzing down on him from all directions. When he finally arrives safely back home, he is cured of wanting to trail around town with Betty."

I have dreams in which I’m playing chicken with the trains! Some of the best fun in my life! I know that I can’t really get hurt or die in dreams so it’s perfectly safe! I usually just fly out of the train’s way! Of course I would never do something that foolish in real life, even if I DID have the power of flight!

By this time Pudgy had literally taken over the Betty Boop series-and Betty had become less of a sexpot. No wonder the series ended a year later. The official reason was that Mae Questal wouldn't move to Florida when the Fleischers moved their studio, but by this time Betty's popularity had shrunk anyhow.

@heartv No, the artstyle just changed towards the end of the 1930s. The gist of it is that there were stricter censorship laws forcing Fleischer Studios to make Betty Boop more "modest" and "ladylike," which basically meant Betty couldn't wear her signature short dress, and characters like Bimbo and Koko were cut out. This eventually led to the Betty Boop cartoons becoming less popular in general. Towards the end of Betty Boop's run, they experimented with different art styles and new characters (like Grampy and Fearless Fred) and even attempted to come up with a new mascot character to replace Betty (see Sally Swing) but none of that really helped Fleischer Studios regain the popularity they had before the censorship laws. This is one of those episodes with the newer artstyle made during Betty Boop's decline.
