"When your sweetie tells you everything will be okay... just skeebibbly skibbidy skibiliddily diddily skibbididdy beebly biddy beeb dabay" -Old Man of the Mountain, 1933
I wrote the whole thing out and more when a friend got married..when Cab was singing, "When you see the preacher, there's only one thing to say, Dit da skieebibbly skibbidy skibiliddily diddily yop bop dopbop caziddly biddly op zop yop bop.............a whole paragraph of it. A wedding card that nobody ever said anything about....woe is me.......
4:40 I love how Betty is kind and respectful to all these men, but if they make one move on her without consent she stands up for herself. What an icon.
Well, in the current world Cab Callaway would be allowed to stay in the same hotel and eat in the same restaurants as Max Fleischer. We've made that advance in the last near century
So folks know, the ‘I’m gonna do the best I can’ dance number the old man does is accomplished by Rotoscoping. The animators filmed Cab Calloway dancing, and then used key animations to overlay the old man onto Cab. Fleischer Studios made three cartoons in collaboration with Cab Calloway in this way, all of them centered on his music and dance. In ‘Minnie the Moocher’ he plays a ghost-walrus, which just looks kinda awkward when the dancing starts. In the second, ‘Snow White’ he plays Koko the Clown and sings ‘St. James Infirmary Blues’, and in this one he performs and plays the Old Man of the Mountain. You can see how the technology of Rotoscoping and the animators’ familiarity with the technique improves if you watch them in that order. Also, in the original song, the Old Man’s simple living and carefree life are to be admired. The lines about him eating people were added by Cab Calloway for this cartoon.
I think 'awkward' is your own impression. The ghost in the Snow White short is incredible, one of my favorite animated sequences of all time. I'm thankful you've shared your thoughts here!
@@feloniousbutterfly Why thank you! And I like the ghost in the Snow White segment, it's the ghost-walrus from Minnie the Moocher that looks a bit weird to me. It has the classic cartoon 'pear-shaped' body, think Homer Simpson, but then the very human-proportioned legs just kinda extend out of the bottom of the 'pear'. The old Man and Koko in ghost form have much longer legs, and so it doesn't look awkward to me. Thanks for responding though! Of course you are just as entitled to your view as mine, and neither is invalid.
@@tokenmusicproducer I actually do, but that's because I'm fortunate enough to have a family who was able to keep track of their genealogy. Either way, you shouldn't shame somebody for knowledge, or for ignorance.
Finally, Another person who knows what he's talking about! It's always a good day when you find another Fleischer Fanatic. I already knew all this information, But I respect you telling it to the people here who don't!
Yes, the whole Oogie Boogie sequence in Nightmare Before Christmas is Tim Burton's tribute to Cab Calloway and his role in these Fleischer cartoons, Minnie the Moocher, Snow White, and this one
My favourite part is how Betty gives the old man the benefit of the doubt, and when he crosses her boundaries, she doesn't let him get away from it. This short shows her specifically disregarding warnings (she's a jazz age girl, she's not gonna listen to fuddy duddies!) but then when they're right, no one blames her. Instead, all the animals of the forest come to her aid and beat him up! In the end, he was nothing but an old man that people let treat women like crap until Betty came along and they realized they had to do something. And then he was no match to everyone because they worked together! A great message, and something the moral majority SHOULD have been fighting for more of!
She's in charge from the beginning -- everyone is cringing and afraid, and her first reaction is, "I gottta check this cat out!" Fearless and in control.
Never realized the line in The Nightmare Before Christmas when Oogie Boogie says “I’m going to do the best I can” was a copycat line from this cartoon- so exciting to find out!
They filmed that about two blocks away from my Photo lab. They took 35mm shots of the lit sets and we printed 5x7's, and 8x10's of all the pics. I made extras, and have an amazing stash. Pre-digital..
There seems to be many comments on the risqué content of these cartoons. Prior to 1934 just about anything was possible. That year the Catholic church got involved and the result was THE MOTION PICTURE PRODUCTION CODE, which changed everything until 1968 when it was replaced by MPAA rating system. Up until then nothing was allowed that made fun of religion or government. Sin had to be punished. For more information see The Motion Picture Production Code on Wikipedia.
Back in the 1970’s, when I was in high school/college, I’d go to all-night showings of Betty Boop cartoons at the Elgin theater in Chelsea, Manhattan. Everyone was smoking grass, not that we needed it with these! The most perfect pairing of music and animation ever
Interesting history (regarding sex and race in cartoons): "...the sexually suggestive nature of this film caused 'some Americans at the time, especially Catholics,' to complain to exhibitors who then pressured Paramount Studios (distributor of the Betty Boop series) to tone down the Betty Boop character, which subsequently pressured Fleischer Studios to do the same thing. This can be seen when an old man sees Betty and acts crazy, a fish starts to follow her before getting hit by his wife, and Betty's dress even is removed in one scene. According to Lehman, 'In dispensing with the African-American entertainers and their music after limiting the 'Betty Boop' series' sexual references, [Max] Fleischer thus acknowledged the widely assumed connection between raciness and blackness.' After 1934, African-American jazz music (which was, in fact, often racier than other musical forms, though not exclusively so) would no longer appear in Betty Boop cartoons, and she metamorphosized into a more conservative, mature, domestic character who often played only a supporting role."
The Catholic Legion of Decency had a lot to answer for from 1934 through the mid-sixties when I was growing up. Their moral watchdogs barked at even the slightest implication of sexual matter, and led (with the help of the Production code, which was partly their doing) to such idiocies as married couples never being shown in a bedroom unless it was made clear they had twin beds separated by a night table. I thought censorship was over, and so it was through most of my adult years, but it is coming back with a vengeance now. Sex is no longer the trigger for Mrs. Grundy, but that doesn't keep her and her like from claiming to be outraged by matters that would only trigger mild annoyance in rational people, and imposing their standards on society as a whole.
@@kirkmattoon2594 Censorship should just be done away with entirely. Its unconstitutional too. Just have a rating system if people want so they know whether things are "kid friendly" or not thats all you need.
@@user-xg8yy7yl1d Betty Boop was never meant to be "Kid Friendly" anyways. Fleischer's target audience was Always people in their 20s and 30s in the 1920s.
3:16 really shocked me… If no one else gets it take your time and let me know what you think. Other than that the part where the old man of the mountain dances is just animation gold… The work and hours it took to draw the person dancing matching the cartoon's movements with the real dancer, and This isn't the first time animators have done this they've did it with the lion King, beauty and the beast, and so many other animated movies and cartoons. I just hope that they continue to do this amazing talent. And to add on in the nightmare before Christmas made by Tim Burton the dance was also implicated in a scene that was cut were ugly boogie dance just like the old man of the mountain in his song
@@CaletoFran exactly, I mean wasn't meant for adults too Because if that was the case I understand but come on that's a little much. Especially if kids were watching in the theaters.
@@CaletoFran I know that's what you meant, I'm saying that if they showed us in theaters back in the day, and you know the kids would watch cartoons but to have that in a cartoon they would've had to say "this cartoon is not for kids" The chances are that some kids still snuck in anyway. I'm just glad I didn't show the guy actually raping the poor hippo woman.
4:49 pretty cool that this was referenced in Nightmare Before Christmas' Oogie Boogie song. It's also cool that she was seen as a sex symbol without anyone degrading her. You don't see female characters like that often, I could only name you 3, Betty included among them.
@@gunier.j.kintgenanimations Bayonetta was one, but I can't remember the other one. I can name others now, like; Jessica Rabbit, Mai Shiranui, and Juliet Starling.
Something like Cuphead or something like that.( Intresting fact, one of the bosses from the delusion last course,a boss very similar to this man, appears in the dlc, maybe this was the gaint bosses inspired?)
If anyone who knows the Cuphead Show and liked the background music from the song "Roll the Dice", just know that its inspired off of the part at 4:54 Didn't know this until I had watched this episode after watching the episode "Down and Out" from the Cuphead Show Also I love the song in this episode.

Watching this I can see what inspired oogie boogie and over the garden wall also love how Betty is considered a sex symbol but not a whore she was flirty but she made sure the guys knew no means no if they didn’t listen she beat the crap out of them
I noticed that when she says what are you going to do and then he says I will do the best I can I noticed that it's what the boogeyman says from night mare before Christmas
dose the one scean with the woman with the baby carriage implied she was raped and had his babys ??? there is alot of messed up innuendos in betty boop ive noticed
@ psh back then people dint get divorced and if you got a girl pregnant men generally maned up and they got married weather they liked it or not and thats why there where so many unhappy marriages as well
Face it, the whole beginning of the cartoon is various other characters getting warnings to Betty about the Old Man of the Mountain and revealing why she should definitely avoid him, the animation is reading between the lines.
@Atomic Kat ya but it was highly frowned upon and uncommon. im not saying it did not happen im just saying that is why people put up with abusive marriages their whole life.
I can’t believe I used to watch this at my grandmas house I remember not knowing why the woman had 3 baby’s that looked like the old man but now I can’t believe why this was allowed at a time 😨
List of some things about this beautiful piece of art: 1: Betty: I'm gonna see that old man of the mountain! Me: But why though? Why would you do that? Also what is that expression of the owl thing when she says that? 2: Betty: What ya gonna do now? OMotM: I'm gonna do da best I can! Me: THIS IS HALLOWEEN 3: How is Betty not scared of this guy?
