I had tried to get tickets to go see her at this show at Carnegie Hall to no avail. I usually know someone one who knows someone, not this time. One of my fire Island housemates was going with his then boyfriend who flight was delayed getting to New York. So I got to go. It was an incredible evening. As soon as they release the CD, I had that played it over and over again.
The very Pretty and extremely talented Singer, Actress, Dancer and Performer Betty Buckley is the best and one and only Grizabella the glamour cat in the Broadway Musical Cats, the best Desmond in the Broadway musical Sunset Blvd and the best Mama Rose in the Broadway musical Gypsy ever! I was born in 1978. I saw Betty Buckley in the national tour of Hello, Dolly in Louisville, Kentucky! She was the best Dolly ever! Betty Buckley at Carnegie Hall is excellent!
This is the first time I've heard that transition, "Why did I do it?" as if it were actually just now ocurring to the singer/character for the first time. She's an amazing interpreter AND performer.
I'd like to say one thing on her behalf if I may. When she plays a character, and I have told her this myself, she is the only actress I know that actually and on stage as well which makes it even more difficult to do, but she gives her characters an actual soul! I've noticed that every time I've seen her perform. I wish she would do more and even larger master classes in acting especially on stage and go into how to give your character a soul. So many would not even understand that but whatever she could share would be given from one who knows that's for sure! PS thank you for all of your kind words about her. I know she would appreciate every one.
Yes... Ms. Buckley is truly amazing!!! The role of Mama Rose, probably the greatest role in Musical theater history!!! No one on earth can compare to Ethel Merman... best performance on broadway ever (yes, I saw her when I was 10 yr. old). But... I must say, Ms. Buckley is a close second... Congratulations to her!
Oh Betty… the recording of this concert should remain the living proof of why Broadway should exist at all. It's all there, embodied in one person: Ms. Betty Buckley.
She's simply the awesome best there is hands down case closed. I've loved her all my life and I will love her till I leave this planet. I'm just so grateful that she knows that fact personally. It gives me great joy and she gives me beyond Joy! You wouldn't find a better human being anywhere and that is a truth, not just a compliment.
Probably easier for the onstage costume changes for those three numbers she did back to back. Black skirt and blouse for the "Sacred Monsters"; Margaret, Norma and Rose. Seeing the costume changes was such a neat idea.
Me too! that show was amazing. I saw Ms. Buckley in person in 2016 and spoke to her after the show...I made a point of mentioning how terrific she was in Gypsy. She was tremendously gracious to her fans that evening, I have to say. She took the time to talk to everyone in the line.
Arthur Laurents, director and writer of the book, wanted Linda Lavin to follow Daly. Her interpretation flopped. Apparently, he was not of fan of Buckley's. Betty Buckley is brilliant, perfect for this score and he must have been having a bad day.
And what a shame because the Peters revival was a horror. Peters was miscast and every second was utter torture except for Tammy Blanchard. Ms. Peters did not realize that Rose is funny, the role was way beyond her acting capabilities and her voice WAY too small for the role. A travesty.
