The way Patti comes to such a devastating, monumental, and STAGGERING realization when she takes that pause and then says, "that's why." It makes me weep.
I saw her do this just after she won the Tony for it. I’m not her biggest fan but she was phenomenal in this. The audience was electric. It was a really memorable experience!!
The fact that Rose is maybe the greatest role for a musical actress aside, of the thirty-plus women I've seen in this role, my absolute favorite was Tyne Daly...she gave me Rose from the inside out. She may not have the dramatic pipes of LuPone or the others; her singing is real, pure, with a gentle undercurrent - but she had the drama they all missed (for me). But so many brilliant versions...what a show. What a score! STILL! 60 years later, still the best.
Even without seeing her, I can see the expressions on her face morphing second by second; I can hear the voices in her head fighting for domination. This is what Rose’s turn is about, a mental breakdown happening in a musical expression of song. It’s not pretty, it’s real.
This interpretation is just so different than any other rendition she’s ever done of this song. The last half is usually the showstopper but for this, it’s the build up to that ending. So real. Though many say it shouldn’t be this way, due to how much tickets skyrocket in price for closing performances, you cannot beat them
I wasn't wild about the other versions of her performing this song, but this one has so much more passion and heart. It's sort of amazing! I feel that this one is a lot more in character instead of just Patti being Patti. Too bad there's no video to go with it.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OTdPWmHstjE.html this is some new footage of Patti that came out recently. It’s relatively similar to this recording but it has video to go with it.
Patti LuPONE... SUCH A WONDERFUL ACTRESS! She really deserved that Tony! But I will prefer for ever ms. Peters (who is, I'm fear, terribly overrated!)...
Too much just shouting it for my taste . Yes we get it Patti , its ur mental breakdown moment hit number . But this version is indulgently over sung /over played . Screeching not needed . Imelda Staunton much better . More vulnerability along with the mental breakdown madness , anger and anguish Rose feels by this point near the end of her story / life .
you cant really say that a actors portrayal of a character is wrong. if thats what she got from the script then its not over dramatic. Its what she thought was right. alsoo i dont see you winning a tony for your acting expertise so take a seat.
@@MM-tx7gi yea you can have a opinion but if it’s nice nice shut your mouth... and if you did you wouldn’t be on here commenting on this video in the negative way you are
