By the time "Annie Get your Gun" was released, this particular scene was getting a standing ovation from movie theater audiences. That says a lot about the impact this extraordinary and underrated performer had. Thanks Betty...
Betty said in her interview with Robert Osborne that she was treated by cast and crew like crap because they wanted Judy. I think Betty Did a much better job than Judy would have. I saw on this website that Judy had to be replaced in 3 movies by another actress. Betty being one of them. I think she was born to do this part. Love you Miss Hutton.
Garland was great, but she wouldn't have been right for this role. Her nervous, hesitant, "sensitive" style weren't a good fit for Annie. Hutton's all-out performance is perfect.
What will it be like if Judy respectfully gave the role to Betty and told the cast and crew to treat her better? That would've been brilliant if that was the case.
Betty Hutton was an exceptionally talented lady. She was definitely never boring! I've always loved her. She put her heart and soul into everything she did and it showed.
Betty Hutton is the best Annie Oakley ever! I own the 1950 MGM classic movie Annie Get Your Gun on videotape, Laser Disc, DVD and Blue Ray. I was born in 1978. Thank you for posting and sharing this movie magic! I love it!
Betty Hutton was so expressive with her whole body ! She put everything into her performance 🎭! No one was as good in this role as she was as Annie. All the others were great but Betty was SUPERIOR great !!
Betty leaves it all out there in a vastly entertaining performance which includes great acting, singing, and comedy- so glad she got this opportunity to show what she could do with a top musical-comedy role.
Always loved this performance. I think Hutton is perfect in the way she performs as an awkward but also confident young woman. I watched the Reba McEntire and Bernadette Peters versions of this song and I don't think they have the same youthful innocence. That's not to say they're not great in their own right or to criticise older actresses but I just think that Hutton's youthfulness and enthusiasm really work in this particular portrayal of Annie.
Made in the days where if you goofed your lines they would try again, then as the movie plays you could some times see the slight skip where the scene was fixed.
WOW. What a talent. She's so awesome. Love her songs, now just finding out about her movies and stage work. I'm happy to know I've got more Betty Hutton works to find and enjoy! Thank you Betty Hutton for blessing the world with your passion. 🙏
Over half a million views. More than most of her contemporaries. Betty Hutton seems to relate more to today than here in 1950. Maybe it's because no one has done this role better, before or since.
Betty was born for this role. I read that on at least 3 films Judy had to be replaced by another actress. This being one of them. Betty does this better than I think Judy would have,I've seen a few outtakes. I read that mgm wanted to buy Betty s contract from paramount but they said no. Too bad because 2 years later she walked out on paramount. She was a dynamic bundle of energy.💖🎥🎬🎶🌟💥
I love Betty Hutton! She is the perfect hillbilly. And for those of you who obviously have hardly or no theatrical experience, I do want to let you know that as an actress or dancer you will be forced into moving certain ways and saying certain things, but as a singer you can sing however you want unless you're acting along with singing, then you will be forced to sing a certain way! So, no more of this "Betty Hutton is boring" nonsense, and yes I said that nicely compared to what I might have said if all y'alls' comments were any worse!!!!!!!!
There is talent like this that still exists, but you won't find it in Hollywood or in any American film. You can still find great singers and acting on the Broadway stage or in regional theatre. I went to a nightclub in New York City last week and several female singers performed on their night off from their respective Broadway shows to perform in the club that night. They blew me away with their talent. They belted and interpreted songs much in the way Betty Hutton and Judy Garland did. But I doubt that these great singers and great actresses from the theatre will ever end up in today's movies as American movie industry executives are not interested in them. With few exceptions, personality is more important than having any special talent. The goal for many is to be a celebrity...not a star with talent.
In this musical number Ms Betty Hutton had incredibly delivered frantic, dynamic, and comic performance.Clearly she had fairly acted out her entire scenes in the 1950 MGM's Annie Get Your Gun with all her heart and spirit. She's got the brilliance, the piquance, and the endurance to portray the real-life ace sharpshooter Annie Oakley. As s scruffy and unladylike gunslinger she was too anxious over not getting a man who would fall in love with her.Even if Ms Hutton had encountered some problems while doing this movie, nevertheless she had depicted her role winningly, cunningly, and fittingly. Moreover her movie has turned out to be one of MGM's most profitable, commendable, and enjoyable classic film musicals of all time. It's a hog-killin' time!
+Wayne Hobbins Yes, Judy Garland got sick because she was also finishing up two other musicals and was sick and too tired. Then the original Bill died as well and he was replaced by the one in the movie.
I loved her in. THE PERILS OF PAULINE, also. And she was great in THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, with Charlton Heston, too. She was always one of my Favorites. I loved her spunk and whacky comedy. She was one of a kind❤️❤️
This is such a cute song and she sings it with such conviction " you can't shoot a male, in the tail, like a quail, Oh you can't git a man with a gun!" :D
Betty Hutton could be so overachieving, viewers assumed she was merely a loud bombshell. But looking at her work today I find a professional who was a perfectionist, aiming higher than most of her contemporaries and always hitting her ambitious mark! She had an unbelievably productive year in 1952, releasing not merely "Annie" but DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth" and "Let's Dance" (in which she's the only partner to upstage Fred Astaire). Sadly, she also shot herself by angrily quitting Paramount and the movies. She would have one more movie, "Summer Reunion," an amateurishly-made "little" picture in which she co-stars with Dana Andrews.
It’s sad to say they no longer share this film in my old chorus class due to the “gun violence” it was an ICONIC film that had been in our schools for generations.
As a dyed in the wool Merman/Martin fan, Betty has two tough acts to follow but tonight I've watched all three performances and have to admit that Betty brings her own wonderful magic to this number. We are lucky Betty came in to finish the job.
Saw this in a Casey Neistat video and searched for the movie. It's Annie Get Your Gun released in 1950. Unfortunately the actress, Betty Hutton, passed away in 2007. She made this movie when she around 28 or 29.
Back in the 1950s, girls used to sing this with different lyrics at Smith College: You’re sharp as a pin point, Your marks are really ten point, You are Dean’s List, Sophia Smith - But if a man wants a kiss, kid, He doesn’t want a Quiz Kid - Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains! Your French may be flowing, Your Russian just as knowing, You may sprechen zie Deutsch with ease - But love for a man is The Universal language - Oh you can’t get a man with your brains! You might know the futility Of marginal utility And believe that our enterprise is free - But that’s irrespective Of love, which is collective, Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains! You may know Lucretius, And all the things he teaches, You may think with Socratic skill - But when a guy wants a mate, oh He isn’t quoting Plato, Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains! You have Joyce in your carrel And write like James T. Farrell, You recite all of Shakespeare’s plays - But you can’t get a Romeo With a Smith diplomee-oh. No, you can’t get a man with your brains!
hi ! I from Russia. some day before here showing betty hutton on channel KULTURA (about movie legends). it was amazing..NOW I BIG FAN FOR HER ))) miracle...
Fantastic, and thank you. Betty Hutton believed that her appearance in "Anne Get Your Gun" effectively ended her career (although she went on to appear in "The Greatest Show on Earth" a little later). She couldn't get along with the other cast members, among other difficulties.
anyone notice that at the beginning when she opens her mouth to sing, they cut to a shot in-front of her, but the cut was like 1.5 seconds before she opens her mouth, so she opens wide to start singing again.
This movie I saw at the Classic Cinema Croydon. ‘54??? I can’t tell you how big an influence it’s been in my life! It’s shaped the whole way I look at personal relationships, both business and personal. There you go!
She really was ahead of her time. The fact that she dressed, acted, and spoke deliberately like this instead of satisfying the demands of what was seen as feminine at the time is really inspiring. Wish she was still here with us :(
