She was the only female dancer who could keep perfect step doing anything he could do..and making it look just as easy as he made it look. But she was more versatile. She could do Bill BoJangles Robinson, annie oakley with a rope, buddy rich with drums...anything. and make it look easy. not just feet but hands too. She was the best.
At a famous AFI award show honoring Fred Astaire, late in their lives, Eleanor Powell was heard to say the pair took two weeks of rehearsal just to refine the arm and hand motions for the dance! Imagine!
I ALWAYS PREFFERED VERA ELLEN TO ELEANOR POWELL. SHE WAS SMALLER AND CUTER AND MUCH BETTER LOOKING AND JUST AS TALENTED, IF NOT MORE SO.. SHE WAS VERY UNDERRATED. RIP
Doris Day wss in a class apart..she could do it all: sing, dance and act both comedy and serious drama..She was one of the greatest talents in show business. I doubt we will ever her see a woman of her stature again...
While there's no denying that Vera is always amazing, I just want to give a moment of appreciation to the incredible, well timed and acted acrobatics of those male dancers at the end! The whole sequence was so well done👋
Lots of great singers have sung this song. However, I love Donald’s rather “casual” approach to the music. He blends from conversation to the music in such a pleasant way. Donald could certainly belt out a song - so it’s nice to heahow he interprets these lyrics…. Also, at the very end, there’s a nice touch - a saleslady behind a counter is watching Donald and is amused as his makes his exit. This entire clip is pure MGM Gold. …Rowby.
No one will probably read this comment since it's been many years since this video appeared on RU-vid. What makes me laugh as a man is how I always hear Ginger Rogers did everything in reverse or backwards and did it in heels. What's funny is as a man that's who I was watching in the first place, but with the woke community and those types before them always have to make a big deal out of it as if we're so dumb we didn't notice it in the first place.
Vera-Ellen was a fabulous all round dancer and she really showed off her high extensions in this dance. I don't see how she could have been anorexic. She is too energetic in her dances and her muscles are too toned. She was a good weight for a dancer. Cyd Charisse looked very thin also, back in the mid forties. Daily ballet excercise does that.
I so loved this woman. Bob Hope hit the nail on the head when he labeled her "A vitamin pill with legs". Too nice for Hollywood. Rest peacefully, sweet angel.
I'm watching a performance done 36 years before I was born, uploaded 15 years ago. The internet makes me really depressed sometimes, but I'm glad it lets me experience this.
That's a take on you can't get a man with a gun from an old movie "Annie Get Your Gun". Oh a man may be hot, but he's not when he's shot, Oh ya can't get a man with a gun.
