“An unusually sensitive work about the racial barriers that still divide us in so many areas of life.” - Jonathan Kozol
Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black, White, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is self-segregation a coping strategy or a problem? Twenty years ago, in Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, brought a complicated argument to the table: an appreciation of racial identity formation as essential to any potential communication across racial and ethnic differences. With a completely revised edition, Tatum joins us to discuss why we're apart when we're together.

So happy to have found her work. She is clear and, while nonjudgmental, her teaching cuts to the core of racism. Thank you, Beverly.

Prof. Tatum takes such a delicate and nuanced approach to explaining how the concept of "race" shapes our social identity.

Dr. Tatum’s writing is so fluid, engaging, detailed and authentic that you don’t even feel as if you’re reading her books, but rather, basking and submerging yourself in her brilliance. This is also a great conversation. She is a remarkable teacher and elder.

That's the way it was at Booker T Washington where I attended high school, and no one paid much attention to what was obviously voluntary self segregation.

We should do away with systems of advantage that are based on race. Affirmative action, for example.
@cmonster67
@cmonster67 4 года назад
Agreed, "...racism is based on a system of advantages." so let's talk about Affirmative ACTION (AA) ; not just that certain people are legally allowed preferential treatment because of their race, but that there are people who feel that the people who need AA are not capable of competing with other races without being given an advantage. That in itself is racist.

@cmonster67
@cmonster67 4 года назад
@@LadyPinkster You'll have to tell me how white people use it more, are you talking about women? I do see many people either overlooked or made to be WAY better than average in order to compete with those using affirmative action.
@TenkiTench
@TenkiTench 4 года назад
AA was i direct result of PWIs denying POC and Black people access to university education because of their skin color. You heard Dr. Tatum say her father literally had to move out of state because FSU would not let him attend because he was Black. If racism or prejudice wasn't a factor, shouldn't they have let him attend? Her family is clearly educated and they lived in state....
@cmonster67
@cmonster67 4 года назад
@@TenkiTench Explain why the dropout rate is so high for those who were accepted through Affirmative Action. Why don't more of its recipients complete their degree? Why are Asian students turned away from attending colleges even when they are NOT attempting to use Affirmative Action??
@TenkiTench
@TenkiTench 4 года назад
C Monster Affirmative Action does not mean free...... it’s a ticket on a flight but you still have to pay for your vacation. also, Idk. I’m not Asian so I can’t speak on the Asian community. Maybe they should ask the people with money that are buying spots away from other deserving students b/c if you really think it’s not legacy kids and rich donors filling these schools, you would be incorrect

There is no systemic racism. If there were she could cite actual examples of it instead of constructing such an elaborate analogy and offering no supporting evidence. If we instead replace systemic racism for progress in her analogy we can clearly see that some people are making more progress than others, but we wont know the reasons until we scrutinize the lives of every individual. We can not make progress towards some form of equality by comparing groups of people to each other. We have to look at the needs of each individual.
