I've heard some complaints about it being too "safe" but a franchise like Beverly Hills Cop is meant for popcorn escapism. Its not the sort of IP that is about deconstruction and subverting expectations. You just wanna go in, see Axel Foley make jokes, kick ass and have fun. Most people are just sick of nihilism nowadays. Its why Dial of Destiny among a lot of other recent legacy sequels have failed because they don't understand the property. Indiana Jones is supposed to be an escapist fantasy hero who does things regular people can only dream of doing. Making him a miserable geriatric failure with no family fundamentally goes against the essence of the character. Plus Eddie Murphy despite being in his 60s is still spry and has energy. Harrison Ford was clearly too old too play the character and it was just sad to watch. This flick sounds fun.
Even with it playing things safer it has moments where does deconstruct things too. Like the bit at the hotel where Axel stops mid bit because he's tired and asks if they have any rooms available. So it even has moments like that. But it's not the main focus of the script. It focuses on being a fun mix of action and comedy like the first two films first and foremost and has moments of depth and deconstruction as secondary elements of the script.
@@OcpCommunications Which is fine. Dealing with a character aging isn't bad and makes sense. I thought Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Top Gun: Maverick did it well where Indy and Maverick are clearly older and have lost people in life but are still the same character and aren't losers. Dial of Destiny and the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy is how you do it poorly where there just broken down failures who get no redemption by the end.
@@LivingGhost1 Yep. This was still Axel at the end of the day. He's older but he's not deconstructed to the point where he's a sad sack loser like Bill and Ted in Face The Music or Dewey in Scream 5 or Indy in Dial Of Disgrace.
I am so glad you had fun with this one. It really surprised me to be honest. Yeah, the script wasn't the most original in the world but to me it still had some clever moments, the action when it was there was surprisingly good and full of real stunts and barely any CGI, the score is fantastic, and it isn't as funny as the first two but it's a big step up from III and it was just an entertaining watch. Definitely one of my favorite films of the year as well. And it was just so nice to see Eddie actually trying and having fun as Axel again.
Glad you enjoyed this and I did as well. I have the same kind of nitpicks, I do wish Judge Reinhold was used a bit more. I wish the first half was more of Axel Foley and Joseph Gordon-Levitt being partners but I get they wanted to establish the daughter some. For me it's just minor stuff but this was a very worthwhile sequel that was entertaining & blows Part III into oblivion. Great job on review!
Beverly Hills Cop Axel F isnt that great imo. It is pretty Mid and the Daughter was annoying and the worst part of the whole movie she stunk up the joint and ruined alot of it for me and the lack of Rosewood was Criminal. Kevin Bacon was underutilised and should have had more screen time and more to do. Ellis Dewald in BHC3 was more menacing. I dont hate the film the soundtrack and use of old songs were good and Joseph Levitt was fine and the Shooter Mcgavin cameo was great but i didn't like use of CGI blood in the finale in my BHC movie.
I had my doubts about this movie because of how long it’s been since the awful third movie but will definitely check it out. It’s awesome that they brought back Rosewood, Taggart and Serge.
Hey matt amazing review I love this movie I love all 4 Beverly hills cop films specifically the 3rd one is very unrated in my opinion. Is so fucking awesome to see Eddie Murphy back as AXEL🔥🔥🔥 i wish this came out in theaters instead of Netflix
Hell yeah, it’s awesome to see you enjoyed this one! I still need to watch it myself, it’s gotten a much better reception than I ever thought possible especially considering Eddie Murphy’s track record.
I haven't seen the movie yet but by watching the trailer I knew you would like it I hope they release it on DVD so I can watch it if not I think my mom is getting Netflix for her birthday I can watch it then
Yeah, this movie rocked. It did everything it needed to do ... and dang, genuinely hilarious a lot of the time, Eddie actually looks like he wants to be there. A++++ entertainment.
40 years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanos, Matt liked an Eddie Murphy legacy sequel, human sacrifices, dogs and cats livibg together, MASS HYSTERIA!!
I really liked the movie! Having those two songs right at the start with the opening action scene put a genuine smile on my face. I laughed and had fun seeing this character I grew up watching again. My only complaint is as you mentioned, the daughter's stuff really felt like if you cut her character out entirely, the movie would have flowed much better. Maybe have the three guys together again, instead of the daughter.
The daughter was definitely the worst part of this movie even though I have liked that actress in other movies but other than that I enjoyed it. Joseph Gordon and Eddie Murphy should have had way more screentime together though as well as John Ashton and Judge Reinhold who was criminally underutilized.
I feel the exact same way about this film! And I had the same critiques. It was definitely a worthy sequel in my opinion! And I’m glad you mentioned that scene that was in the trailer, I wish they could release that deleted because I would watch it!
24:25 This bit is actually funnier than you said. The joke wasn't that Eddie thought the phone was disconnecting, the joke was that Eddie KNEW she kept hanging up on him, but Eddie had to BS his way into getting the guy to give him another call everytime to avoid the embarrassment of the calls ending from hanging up.
Not horrible. But very safe forgettable and I prob won’t ever watch again. My only true critique is the final act. I’m thinking it’s setting up a major action sequence. Nope. 2 mins go by Kevin bacon already outta here. But overall very solid.
I really enjoyed this film. It was everything i wanted in a beverly hills cop film. Eddie was classic Eddie, i wish we had more scenes with Kevin Bacon he was a really good villian just wish this was in the movie theater.
If this Beverley Hills cop film ( granted gotta re write certain things) was the 3rd film that came out in 1994 this franchise would have one hell of a trilogy.
Hello Ramboraph4life. My name is Isaiah and I have something important to say to you. God loves you and like any father he wants to help you and keep you safe especially from the devil. But I am not just speaking to you about this I am also talking to your fans about this. God loves us all and he wants us all to be saved not just from ourselves but from the devils clutches. Do not be afraid to come to the Lord for his love is for evreyone Shalom Shalom.
Matt I am very happy you enjoyed this one, I had a ball with BHC4, it was a love letter to the first two films and also did its own thing. It got the balance right. Overall it had a simple task, be better than part 3. It succeeded and then some.
Great Job Matt, I might check out Beverly Hills Cop 4, I Like Beverly Hicks Cop 1 & 2 there very Fun Action Comedies, there Not Films I Love Cause there Not I rewatch a lot, but there Fun. Eddie Murphy did a Good Job Too, but Personally I Respect Your Opinion Matt, I’ve Always Loved Beverly Hills Cop 3 is my Favorite In the Franchise IMO, very Funny, Great Action, Well Written & Directed IMO, Goes At a Fast Pace, Eddie Murphy & Judge Reinhold did a Great Job, That’s 1 of my Favorites Of Eddie Murphy Too
Given this had been kicking around for years I was glad to see it eventually see the light of day and be a lot of fun. It's especially nice seeing some of the original cast return too.
I glad enjoyed it and I just saw it last night ago, I love that so much, it is way better than third piece of garbage john ruins eddie career, I don't mind Axel his daughter character have some issue, sometimes she will get annoying, Kevin bacon he is really great job His character playing as main villain he is criminal mastermind worst enemy of axel Foley, john Astin and judge finally come back returning once again, have a great really funny scene, great story nice warm.
I Love Eddie Murphy he’s very Funny & Talented, he’s 1 of my Favorite Actors, I Love 48 Hours Films, Vampire In Brooklyn, Nutty Professor Films, Metro, Dr. Dolittle 1 & 2, Bowfinger, Showtime, The Haunted Mansion, Meet Dave, & 1000 Words are my Favorites Of his
I was worried while watching it that the daughter was gona stay with axel as like the new billy while investigating but onces she went to the side it got much better and more like a buddy cop film. The ending was sad seen the 3 together because we all thought why wasnt the whole film like this? Lol
22:38 That is my favorite film of his. 25:40 Yep your right there is a lot more to Kevin's villain character than both villains in the first 2 films put together. 27:30 That whole thing kept making me think of ''Live Free Or Die Hard'' with McLane being on the outs with his daughter Lucy and how she changed his last name stuff just like here but I prefer it in that sequel than in this sequel but that's just me. 28:28 That's what I thought also especially since she does look a little like that same actress from ''Beverly Hills Cop 3'' but according to Axel his daughter is 32 years old which means she had to been born in either 1991 or 1992? way before that sequel. 28:58 Maybe they're going to have be in the next sequel? The 5th film has been green lit already Matt. 33:41 It could be possiable? 35:06 No Matt that's Guy Torry you thinking about from ''Dead&Deader'' that's not the some comedian. Awesome job on the very long review bro I really wish I could've loved it as much as you and everyone else has to me Eddie is spot on the score and the sountrack worked well for the film Joseph Gordon-Levitt was a good edition to the film I really wish he was in the film a lot more and such but when he and Eddie are together the fun starts Axel should've been the one to kill Bacon's character or hell have be like the first film when both Axel and somebody else also gets to fire at the same time. But overall I felt the film is forgettable at times I seen this film last Friday I had to look up clips during this review to help me remember some of those scenes?
I want to see this, I loved the Beverly Hills Cop films growing up, by the way did you hear Shelley Duvall from your movie The Shining died she was 75, is that one of your favorite movies?
I Love Kevin Bacon he’s 1 of my Favorite Actors, I Love Friday The 13th, Planes, Trains, & Automobiles, Tremors, The River Wild, Sleepers, Stir Of Echoes, Hollow Man, Novocaine, Mystic River, Death Sentence, R. I. P. D, & Patriot’s Day are my Favorites Of his
1:36 Congrats bro that you have 2 films this year you really enjoyed so far it's just ''The Beekeeper'' for me. 1:54 I didn't care that at all mainly because the actress playing his daughter I felt was lame. 2:54 Rambo 4 is the best when it comes to belated sequels next to ''Rocky Balboa''&''Blade Runner 2049'' also ''Top Gun-Maverick'' IMHO. 3:33-3:43 Agreed bro dough I don't feel this sequel should get higher mark on IMDB over ''Beverly Hills Cop 2'' which sadly it does have. 5:10 Which I understand totally Matt I'm happy this film did that for you. 5:44 Yeah he really stood out as the villain in this film. 9:17 Lorne Balfe he had a tiny hand in doing some of the score for ''Top Gun-Maverick'' also. 10:28 I really miss his laugh from his older films I don't care for his fake forced laugh he does nowadays it just doesn't feel as natural to me I'm sorry bro. 14:21-15:30 That was very disappointing to me also bro. 16:50 Yes you mean when he does a Jamaican accent? LOL! 17:26 True dough mainly because it's been so many years that Jeffery has been his commanding officer he understand how much of a good cop Axel is dough he does get into a ton of trouble in the process of it. 18:23 Yeah good song choice dough it's a remixed version. 19:58 I will admit that made cry out loud laughing a lot especially since she kept doing it to him while she was hanging off her cart🤣🤣🤣🤣 22:18 I do also I really wish he was with Axel a lot more.
Didn't enjoy Axels daughter who was irritating & there wasn't enough of Billy & I was hoping Axel would shoot Kevin Bacons character but barring those quibbles this was decent time waster but the weakest of the franchise.
no they dont whats crazy is the actress that would play her mom if its the lady from part 3 is the same actress that played martin lawrence wife in the bad boys movies
@@ramboraph4life Nutty Professor 3 might be next? But will focus on Klumps teenage son who recreates his fathers fat reducing sirum and turns into a carbon copy Buddy Love type character. Janet Jackson will return as Klumps wife. 🤗🙏👍🙋🎥
This is a movie made by people who understand the Axel F character and the supporting ones! From the beginning of the movie you can see clearly that Axel F is back, besides the unavoidable old age everything you expect from him and the tone of the film is there!
This was a great sequel the first is easily the best of the series. The second one slightly edges this one out just for the fact the 3 main leads had more to do together. The father daughter story was cliche but the actors did well and the Helicopter action scene was one of the best action sequences of the series. Besides the cliche father daughter relationship my only other big problem was Judge was underused we should have gotten more time with the 3 leads of the series together. Still the movie was funny and the charisma and heart was there this was a great fun time with enjoyable performances. No doubt the good reactions to this will lead to a 5th film that will probally feature the 3 leads of the series together more.
@@TotalMeltdown2 I think it looked theatrical enough. While some sequences did look more like streaming appropriate overall it looked good enough to me to be theater worthy. I have seen worse in theaters.
Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a tame film that felt like it was PG-13, had Eddie running around in Elephant Suits and shooting guns that played Jerry Lewis music, that began with bad guys dancing to The Supremes, and featured terrible music/awful villains, and an Eddie that did Not want to be funny...to each their own but I have zero idea how 3 was 'better' than this one. But again, to each their own.
@ramboraph4life BHC 3 is not a good movie, but it least it was trying to be its own thing and the location was unique. The new one plays up the nostalgia too much. The movie begins the same way as the original with the same song. They even have a scene where Axel is arrested by two female cops and brought to the police station instead of two male cops. And no character in BHC 3 is as insufferable as the daughter character. Her acting was weak and her character only exists to belittle Axel and guilt trip him until they spontaneously make up in the end after Taggart talks to her for 5 seconds. The movie, in my opinion, is a complete waste of time and even more unnecessary than BHC3
@@TotalMeltdown2 So is Beverly Hills Cop 2 bad, because it did a lot of similar stuff to the first one? And I think Beverly Hills Cop 2 is awesome. By that logic, is Die Hard 2 then a bad movie? "spontaneously make up in the end"...he took a BULLET for her...you don't think THAT makes a Huge difference? C'mon, man.
@ramboraph4life BHC 2 didn't have the same exact intro with the same exact song like this new one. It didn't bring back Serge and Lisa Eilbacher. Die Hard 2 has recurring things from the first, but it wasn't constantly playing up the member berries. And I don't remember Die Hard 1 having a snowmobile chase and a fight on an airplane wing. Even setting aside all that, those movies are just all around better made and better written with better directors at the helm. They also felt fresh because they weren't far removed from the original by decades. It's fine if you like it. I get people like seeing Axel back in the saddle. I sometimes like to have these fiery debates because it's entertaining and challenging. I say that because I don't want people to take my comments too personally
Uh...this didn't bring back Lisa Eilbacher either...so I don't know what movie you saw. You guys are saying BHC 3 is better and that had Serge in it only he was promoting some stupid Jerry Lewis singing Gun. Here at least it made more since. I really enjoy Die Hard 2. But Die Hard 2 literally had Bruce Willis in once central location during Christmas while his wife was in danger, crawling around air vents, bringing back the same reporter once again being a dick and once again being attacked by Bonnie Bedelia, once again clueless authorities/cops....Die Hard 2 is more similar to Die Hard 1 than this film is to BHC 1.
i even like bhc3 , ........i mean after rewatching : the scene hiding behind a parkbench while badguys fire at him 2 meters away was like straigt up like a bugs bunny cartoon and its nowhere near as good as the first 2 , but i still was entertained
Was curious what your reaction would be to this fourth movie. I had a fun time watching it too. Most of the times a belated sequel doesn´t hit the mark anymore. This one (I think) did. Look at: Dumb & Dumber Too, Zoolander 2, A Good Day to Die Hard, Independence Day: Resurgence, The Matrix: Resurrections, Coming 2 America, etc. All of these sequels were in my opinion not good. But, there are also good ones. Axel F (2024) is one of those.
This is one of my fav movies of the year. It's my 2nd fav in the series after the original. It destroys II and III. That being said III is my 3rd fav after the new one. It used to be my 2nd fav after the original. I was never a fan of II. NEVER. I thought it was lame when I first saw back in 99 and I still think it's lame. I haven't seen it since then. There's a reason y Siskel and Ebert put it on their worst of list. Can't blame then one effing but. III is the first one I saw. I have a soft spot for it. I saw III back in 95-96. I like III more than II. Glad you're safe. I laughed out loud at the Christopher McDonald part. I'm looking forward to Happy Gilmore 2. The original is one of my fav movies. My 2nd fav movie of Adam's after the The Waterboy.
Wow you did review this after all! So it's a step-up from part 3 which I never minded even though it's been 3 decades? Hmmm. The Axel Laugh is so iconic and separates him from other action heroes. I wonder if they got the title from the Axel F frog song.
I know a few RU-vid movie reviewer always point out how they tried to make Axel's daughter Jane a Mary Sue and she berates her dad. But Jane has flaws too and she's not perfect. So Axel actually has to save her. I like the team between Axel Foley and Joseph Gordon Levitt's character Abbott. Also Billy not being in most of the movie didn't bother me. I thought it created more tension and suspense. And seeing Billy and Taggart and the end was awesome. Also Serge was hilarious 🤣
I disagree. Typical Netflix/Legacy Sequel dreck imo. Another sequel trying to do the nostalgia cash in. This is a movie people will enjoy if you want to see Eddie nagged and berated constantly by his daughter. Their relationship sucked. The dude at the beginning probably would have made a better partner. We could have had Rosewood and Axel team up again but no. He has to be relegated to an extended cameo. BS. Not to mention he looks like he's 100 years old. It's hard for me to believe people think this movie should have been in theaters because it looks like a bad direct to streaming TV show. The director should go back to film school or making iPhone. commercials. This movie is everything that is wrong with Legacy Sequels. Axel F can F itself
