Hi DB! Thanks for showing us all the problems and pitfalls of trying to switch nibs on these pens!
@dafarce

On the Amazon site for the Asvine V200, the user, as we know, can choose either a Asvine or a Bock nib. If you choose the Asvine, the site will show photos of the pen with an Asvine nib. If the user chooses the Bock nib, photos of the pen with a Bock nib are shown. Looking closely at the close-up Amazon photo of the Asvine nib option, it seems clear that the nib unit seats nicely with the black collar approximately flush with the end of the section (as per DB at 2:15). On the other hand, the Bock nib close-up Amazon photo shows that the nib unit is seated with just a bit of the black nib collar extruding above the lip of the section, just as DB indicated at 5:54. For me, this simply means that I can purchase the less expensive Asvine nib version and then replace the supplied nib unit with the Bock nib units I already have. Not sure why I wrote this, but now that it is written I'll go ahead and post it. 😕

I've found that Asvine have two different housings. The ones that come on the V126 are different from the P36, P50, and V200 externally. The nibs and feeds are the same, but the housing externally is different. I've been able to put a standard Bock nib unit into the P36 and P50 but the loose Asvine nib units I have purchased in the past don't fit. I took the Asvine unit that came in the P36/P50 out to compare and they are different from the loose Asvine units. As you pointed out in the video, the location of the threads was different and the unit from the P36/P50 only had the o-ring around the collar, not the one before the threads. I don't know what other Asvine pens use which type of housing, but from my experience they have two distinct housing designs they're using.

as far as I understand swapping is actually no problem, but switching Asvine for Bock needs a P36 Bock housing!

Majohn makes bock housing units for its pens, they are interchangable with asvine housing units. They make Jowo housing units too.

you mean the majohn sold with bock nibs? don't they just buy bock nib units? the majohn nib units don't fit the bock ones I guess, or not even bock nibs in majohn nib units

I have an idea you might try to disassemble that unit (stick with me, not a native English speaker). What I did is I put the whole unit in a freezer for a couple of hours. When I got it out, I warmed up just the collar with my hand for couple of minutes. The collar expanded just enough so I could pull the feed and nib out without much force. I did that couple of times with stubborn nibs, never on a Bock unit, but I imagine it would work.

Not a bad idea, worth a try 👍

Amazon sells spare Asvine nib + housing units, and they come in two variants. One variant for pens like the V200, P36, P50, P80. The other for pens like the V169, V126, P20, P30. The variant for the V200 has a housing shape like a Bock housing, for the V126 the housing looks like a Jowo housing. Though I have a V126, a P36 and a few V200s, I haven't checked to see if the nib-housing units are cross compatible between pens that use either variant. I know the V200 and P36 can be interchanged because they use the same variant. I also have a V200 from Amazon that came with the Bock nib. The plastic feed of the Bock nib version has a slot for an extrusion inside the housing to slide in as the feed is placed. The plastic feed for the Bock nib version and Asvine nib version are not interchangeable. I don't know if the Asvine V200 with the bock nib has a removable housing, I have tried to unscrew it but it's either glued on or very tightly stuck.

Thanks for this video. I have been pestering FP channels to do a step by step "OK, I have this Jinhao/Asvine/Hondian pen and I want to update the nib to a bock/jowo(sp?)/schmitt nib." How do do it? What would my searches look like? Can the nib only swap or do I get the whole housing? Venders? Doodlebud, you are now duly pestered.

There's so many combinations so its tricky to know all the answers. Best way is to check different groups to see what others are up to

to remove the nib on the housing, i get a toothpick and dab silicone grease around it (the one i got from TWSBI eco), and let it sit upside down and the next day i can pull it out with ease.

Might have to give that a try

To my surprise it is totally possible to put a standard bock 250 nib unit in an Asvine P50. It sits nicely flush in the section. I put some silicone grease on the threads in order to prevent leakage.

This is a superb video illustrating the issue for more than just Asvine. I ended up with a couple of spare No.6 Diplomat nibs. For those who don't know these nibs are incredibly good writers. The metal part fits into Yowo and Bock feeds perfectly. (some say that the Diplomat nibs are a higher spec. nib made by Bock.) You might have come up with an argument for getting a Bock nib with this pen. To enable nib swapping.
@korax67
@korax67 4 месяца назад
Diplomat nibs are made by Jowo, obviously of higher quality. The same goes for TWSBI too.

@@korax67 Yes, I think these companies switch around a bit. My Diplomat nibs are Bock - I can tell that from the feed shape. Yes, both Jowo and Bock do incredibly good nibs as well as their basic ones. Both Onoto and Conway Stewart (UK) use high end Bock and Yowo gold nibs and they are exceptionally good. It all comes down to spec. I think.
@kevinu.k.7042

@@korax67 Yes, I think there is a fair amount of switching nib suppliers which goes on. TWSBI have used both Bock and Jowo in the past. It wouldn't surprise me if Diplomat do the same. My Diplomat nibs are all Bock though. I can tell that from the feed shape. I have an Onoto with a Jowo gold nib. It is one of the nicest nibs I have. Every bit as good as a Pilot, but a little firmer. I think my core point is that the Bock nib in the Asvine can have its metal component switched to a better one and it seems the Asvine nib cannot. Bock and Yowo metal nib parts are complelety interchangeable.

I fit a Jowo stub nib into my Asvine V126, it took many attempts and a lot of force to finally shove the nib into the feed far enough where the tip of the nib wouldn't scrape the inside of the cap when I cap the pen. Luckily, because I shoved the nib into the feed so many times, now it's loose enough where I can swap for another nib without too much effort.

This is super useful bought two different asvines titanium models with the intention to swop with bock titanium’s nibs I think can live with the slight showing of the collar I bought the asvine with asvine nibs not bock nibs because I dislike the non titanium bock nib the question is does it write and does the threading damage the section. The original thought seems I had now seems debatable at best to switch between bock titanium and asvine nibs. I slowed down my pen buying because a couple of years I had a mental debate : am I buying different nib holder ie fountain pens for a small number of nib makers and does that impact my overall enjoyment of fountain pen ownership or am I the only one?
@paulmchugh1430
@paulmchugh1430 4 месяца назад
I wonder on pens that say you can buy it with a Bock nib that the threading on the section has been changed to accommodate the Bock assembly. It will fit the Bock but not the standard nib assembly. Other companies than Asvine offer you the choice. Do you have one that came with a Bock nib and try to use the company's standard nib assembly in it?
@gsgleason

It looks like a different thread pitch between the Bock housing and Asvine housing.

I've been using Bock and Jowo nibs in my Jinhao pens, with Jinhao feeds, which appear to be shorter than Bock and Jowo feeds. I have had no issues with the shorter feeds and I wonder why the shorter Asvine feeds would be a problem for Bock/Jowo nibs?

Hey DB, what would cause my Asvine P20 to run wet and then virtually dry up in the same paragraph? I'm using a high quality ink which works fine in other pens but gives me hiccups in the P20.
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud 4 месяца назад
The only thing that comes to mind is something in the way not allowing proper air exchange for the ink thats coming out. If the air isn't allowed to fill the space that the ink leaves behind eventually there will be a slight vacuum in the ink chamber not allowing the ink to flow out. If you can pull out the nib & feed and have a look for some obstruction in the feed that would be worth giving a look

Would the bock unit fit the asvine p20?
@ALwinDigital
@ALwinDigital 6 дней назад
I just checked, the Asvine nib + housing units (that look like Bock housings) designed for pens like the V200, P36, P50, P80 fit on my V126 which uses a nib + housing that looks more like a Jowo housing. V126 comes with nib + housing units that are the same as in V169, P20, P30 pens (according to Amazon product descriptions).
