Story time, believe me, or don't idc So, a couple of years ago, on my way to school in winter. like February 9th or 10th, I think. With my brother driving. By this time, we are about 1 or 2 miles from home. we live on a dirt road, so it's icy and it's also raining. The car was old, like 15 years old, I think not the greatest condition. Okay, and here is the traumatic part. So on this road there is a bridge with a shallow river like 3 feet normally. The bridge is about 15 feet off the ground. My brother is smart and sees the wet ice on the bridge, so at this point, we are going about 10 or 15 mph for our own safety. Then he loses control... we go careening off the side off the bridge with the car spinning hit a tree on the way down and land on the opposite side of the river. The car is totaled. We are both seemingly okay. We aren't sure because of adrenaline, but we think we are. Before the crash, my brother had his phone on his lap, and after the crash, we started to look for it. Mind you, there is 1 to 2 ft of water in the car at this point we can't find it so we can't call for help so we climb out of the river up the hill and walk the 1 to 2 miles home and scare the everloving shit out of my mom. (It's still dark at this point, and we barged in through the garage door) Neither of us ever went to the hospital or even a doctor after this. TLDR: Me and my brother went off a bridge in a car. We never went to the hospital or a doctor. Thanks for reading 🙂 Also, I do have trauma from this and have mental issues with controlling ANY vehicles from this
@@agustinbarquero8898 In Germany we have specialists for accident injuries and they don't do appointments because you don't plan an accident and it's obviously moronic to be examined months after the accident. They open at 8 am and it's first come, first served.
@@forcemind1483 it's not that you are broke. Its that your healthcare has insanely high prices. Everything listed here would cost us around 3-5K at worst, not nearly as 6 digits, I'm actually scared to get I'll in Europe or US

My wife got T-boned with the neighbor (originally from Mexico) and her mother in the car. The other insurance company found out the neighbor went to the doctor two days later and they called her and said they would send her $500 so she had some spending money will she gets better. He even told her not to tell anyone. So she came over and told us. I said don't cash that check until you are back at 100% otherwise that is your settlement.
I was in wreck in 97 because someone thought it'd be cool to drunk and go on the interstate. The original adjuster was cool and was going to pay for my massage therapy for a year and then we'd see where we were at (my car was totalled and they'd already given me the money for that). My mistake was to move to Georgia. Thar adjuster mocked massage therapy and said the most my case was worth was $1000. When I settled I got around $13k. The lawyer got a third. Had I settled sooner I might have gotten more money but getting into a high speed wreck will really mess with your mind as much as your body. Never settle until you talk to a lawyer
"Woah, easy there! Easy. You've been out could a couple of [years] now. Why don't you just relax a second? Get your bearings. Lets see what the damage is."
Same scenario, European version : You go to work on Tuesday, your boss doesn't let you work and ask that you go see a doctor. Your medical expenses are free and your boss pay for your days off.
Thank you, I was looking for this. These comments are crazy, yet still the majority is against the way it is in Europe bc of their vague fear of "socialism"

Absolutely insane that accepting some money can be construed as settling with finality. Just completely ignores reality in that not all the consequences are known right away. It's like if the restaurant gave you the bill after ordering food, then you order dessert, but they already gave you the bill so you don't have to pay for dessert.
1st For any injury that may have affected your head or spine go to the doctor even if you have no pain or visible wound. Many times you don't feel the pain because of the adrenaline. 2nd contact a lawyer
I think you missed the point a little bit. This short is just telling you not to fall for quick offers from an insurance company. This is before you're even thinking of a lawyer and several days after the crash.. pay attention
@jaya7760 In my 11 accidents over my life time I learned if vehicle is drivable without further damage go straight to medical help, their logging of the accident and your getting emaciated help will be gold in many ways later. Then call a lawyer.
Third, consult another lawyer for a second opinion. Fourth, contact a third lawyer to determine which of the three lawyers will be most beneficial to you.
I made that mistake accepted a $1500 from the insurance the then 2 months later the symptoms started, neck pain back pain. 4 years later I still a have a bulging disc on my neck and 4 disc protrusions on my back. I’m in pain every day and Drs say they aren’t big enough for surgery but even if they were I couldn’t afford it and PT didn’t help at all.
I'm still in pain from my crash about 4-5 years ago. I was always kind of mad at them for taking so long, but honestly it was kind of worth it because it shows that after this long I'm still in pain. Got 45k, much higher than the original offer of 6k
I was dealing with chronic back pain, definitely seemed like a herniated disc, and listening to Dr John Sarno's Healing Back Pain really helped. "The Mind Body Prescription" is kind of a wider focusing newer version I've also listened to. For the $10ish on audible and 6 hours of your time I'd highly suggest it. If you look into it at all definitely comment back what you think whether positive or negative! -James

And what do I get with the money the government keeps? In 64 years I've been NEVER worried about how to pay a medical treatment: just waving my SS card I can get from some stitches to a hearth transplant, everything included, without receiving even a little bill at the end. When I learned that just calling an ambulante would cost you at least 1000 $, I didn't knew whether to laugh or cry... Plush a year and a half of unemployment pay, 80% of my current salary, available after 6 years of continuous work AND FOR AS MANY TIMES AS I NEED IT AFTER EACH PERIOD OF 6 YEARS; plush my retirement pay; plush all the services you can expect by paying taxes. I'm not in the richest country in Europe, by far; but in many things we can run turns around yours: 5 weeks of paid holidays each year, one whole month most usually in summer and an extra week along the rest of the year could be a nice example... It was disgusting how fast insurance got ahold of me when i got hit by a jeep in high school. I was 15 and they called my cellphone that was prepaid. So the fact they got my number and called me, a minor at the time, so fast is disturbing. But yea, got hit around 6 in the morning and got called around noon. I view myself as lucky so much for that crash. They only hit my left ankle and broke 1 bone. And they had insurance, which is surprising seeing how they had a suspended license at the time.
I remember when I got an MRI after my car accident and they insisted a herniated disc wouldn’t cause me pain, so I kept looking for the reason for 10 more years.
Me too. It's always astounding to me what kind of stories sound completely plausible to an american because they are plausible in America In Europe you go to a doctor. Don't worry about the cost. @@mr2922 I live in Berlin ,Germany and have yet to hear of any case that took years, I have heard of months though. So, for some things you may have to wait months if it isn't something serious and if you're not willing to drive anywhere. For instance for a normal vision checkup that requires an actual doctor you may have to wait 3+ months or do a 1h drive depending on where you are. However, if it is something serious I personally haven't heard of anyone who wasn't treated almost immediately. Like in 2019 I had an acute vitreous body detachment that resulted in a hole in my retina. Went into a hospital without an appointment, got all checked up and my eye got laser treatment the same day and another treatment some days later - didn't pay a single cent. My mother had breast cancer, my partner got two children, our children had to get various kinds of treatments. The highest bill we had was 10 Euros for an ambulance. But I have to say, not all treatments are covered, it depends on the insurance you have. Private insurance over hear gets you special treatment and you'll even get treated faster. For isntance you may have to pay for MRT even if you have an indication for cancer, that costs you about 400 Euros. (just had such a case recently)

This happened to me when I was 32. A head-on collision for which I was not responsible brought the State Farm agent out in a flash. They said they would pay us half of what we had just paid for a 3-month old new model car. I argued with the woman, saying what were we supposed to do with such a payment. The woman said, buy a used one of the same model. I pointed out that there were NO CARS of that brand-new model around. Too bad. State Farm immediately sued the city government for the unmarked [new] intersection and won, so it didn't cost State Farm a nickel. The agent also told me I had to sign off on my injury [that became blinding pain the bext day]. I was young, inexperienced, naïve about my rights. And somewhat impoverished. State Farm has lost thousands of dollars of premiums on our cars, boats, and homes. Theirs was a very shortsighted decision.
Which one’s that? This is great advice (especially for the USA) because I’m sure MOST people would initially accept the 3k not knowing that’s not the best opinion until getting a check up
I didn’t get a wrist injury (ligament were stretched but didn’t tear) until 6 months after a mild rear end at a light. I felt so stupid for not settling right away because the damage was so minimal but now I regret it thanks to all the hand therapy and splinting I need.
There should be a 3 to 6 month grace period for this kind of thing because the issues stemming from an accident might not not make themselves present immediately. Any initial decision made within that first time frame would be made without necessarily having the full knowledge of the extensive impacts.

This is why mandatory government supported healthcare with minimum benefits guaranteed by law is so important. Private insurance will always screw you up. It's their primary job, being able to explain why they WON't pay, and make a profit.
And a government that has to worry about the budget isn’t going to try to save money as well? The american VA screws veterans out of their benefits all the time.
Ok. Don’t wait 3 weeks to go to the doctor. Your herniated discs are probably pre-existing and don’t settle on the first offer. The insurance company is buying a release to protect their insured. But, you can negotiate and you can seek treatment within a reasonable time frame.
Absolutely, especially when people don’t tell you that lawyers will take their clients to junk doctors who used flimsy MRIs to put their Plaintiff on lien care that they have to pay back if the trial fails. By then, the client is worked up to $700,000 and they have to pay it all back. Or hope Plaintiffs counsel pays it, but they won’t.
My grandpa always said if you get into a collision, even if its a slight fender bender, to exit the vehicle and lay on the ground until the ambulance arrives
I saw video of a Transit bus years ago in Chicago. Security video from a store. T-Bone collision. The bus broadsided a dump truck. Not very hard. Driver got off because the radio wasn't working. Went in to use a phone. You could watch the security video. When he got off. There were three people on the bus. By the time he got back on there were 19 people on the bus, all complaining of back and neck injuries.
@@imtheman4805I don’t think peoples access to healthcare should be dependent on a job. What happens when you can’t work due to an injury or disability? What happens when you suddenly get layed off? Life is unpredictable sometimes. And even with health insurance through work many times it doesn’t cover a lot of the insanely expensive medical bills Americans get. Like I’ve seen people still owe thousands and higher even with insurance. Do you know how much I’ve had to pay when I’ve went to the hospital? Nothing, because my country has free healthcare like all countries should. Healthcare shouldn’t be a luxury, it’s a necessity, no one should go into debt for medical issues.
That's why I also have health insurance with a max out of pocket in the 4 digits. Also, I did have two herniated disc's and got a microdiscectomy on each, cost me significantly less than the 3 months of PT.
I seriously hope that this is just exaggerated for the sake of the explanation. Because who in their right mind gets in a car crash and doesn't go to the doctor afterwards
I talked to a lawyer first. Insurance company calls, driver who hit was on state minimum insurance. Lawyer advised me to just take the settlement offer.
The best thing I did when I got in an accident caused by someone else was called my insurance company first, and they cautioned me on things to look out for with the other driver’s insurance company. Just like my agent said they tried to be shady, and eventually I got a personal injury lawyer and was able to get the settlement I deserved.
Got in a car crash. Same day went to the hospital to get the mild pain documented. Turned into an 18m recovery from a shoulder, wrist, and upper back injury. No surgery but still would have cost more then they wanted me to settle for right away. Point being don't sign anything for settlement of medical until you know you're good and have been checked out by a doctor.
I always give two pieces of advice to our family, friends and clients if they’ve been in accident. One, your insurance company does not work for you. Two get ambulatory help, even if you don’t think you need it. Insurance adjuster’s jobs are to payout the minimum on all cases. That’s why you need a personal injury lawyer to negotiate for you.
I also had it happen to me that I only found out the extent of my injuries much later after an accident, and the insurance company did take a little convincing that those injuries were from that accident. Luckily I live in Belgium so I had nothing to worry about.
This legit almost happened to me. I didn’t know any better and insurance was like hey we feel bad for the days you missed off work because of the crash (that wasn’t my fault and left my car totaled) so we will give you $1000 and repay your salary for those days you missed. I almost said yes before asking an older friend and he said noooo don’t take that. Great advice man thank you
A friend's dad passed away 3 days after being in a car crash from internal bleeding. Even if they say you'll be just fine, go to the doctor and make sure they do a complete body check. You never know 😢
Over here in europe, its an automatic tour to the hospital that same day to get a complete physical check if the crash is high speed or bad enough! Xrays, MRI's, internal bleeding and broken bones are the big ones...
Or I get into a car crash on Monday. They take me to the hospital and fix me up. ACC contacts me about paying me while I’m off work. I recover and go back to work without having spent a cent on my healthcare. The US is seriously behind the rest of the developed world.
I live in a country with a good standard of living, if i need a six figure life saving surgery then all i gotta do is get on a waiting list and pay a little more on my next taxes
The day my insurance company calls to give me money, I'll go 100% suspicious. Like what does that mean, what do you want from me, who are you working for ?!
US Healthcare System sounds sooo crazy for my European Ears. I just pay a 130€ (as a university student) a month and don't worry about going to the doctor.
Made this mistake when I was 20. Got rear ended by a drunk driver while sitting at a red light. Car was completely totaled, was a miracle no one died. At the time, I felt okay, but over the next days, I started having neck and back pains. Met with insurance rep, and they offered me $5,000 which I really needed at the time, so I took it. That accident was 16 years ago, and I'm still messed up from it. Can't afford to do anything about it now. I took that $5K just so I could pay my rent and bills for a couple months, and it cost me 16 years and counting of pain and discomfort.
I was in a wreck and they made an offer pretty quickly. I got checked by a clinic and was perfectly fine, they paid for the check up, my car’s “value” (more than what we paid for it) and an extra $500 to settle. I feel like I got off pretty well back then.
I say this as someone who worked in insurance for a decade. If you get hurt in an accident that could be covered by insurance, go to the doctor immediately! You need to document the immediate injury, otherwise, when you eventually go to the doctor with whatever you thought was going away soon, the company will question whether your injury was caused by the accident or something else. Remember, it’s what you (and the company) can document that is important, not what you (or they) believe to be the truth. Also, yes, the case was settled for $3 000, sometimes this will benefit the insurance company, other times it will benefit the person injured. The company offers what they think is the correct sum, and figures it evens out in the end. What they save on is the claims handling, not because they regularly pay out too little. If you regularly pay out too little you will lose your good customers, and only the ones you are likely to lose your money on - who can’t get insured elsewhere - will be left to you.
I was in a bag car accident that permanently damaged my leg . The insurance company offered me $75,000- but I countered with $95,000. They agreed. Never be afraid to barter!
