My daughter bought me an Mtech with an American flag on it for Christmas. She was 11 at the time and she was so excited to give me that gift. It’s one of my favorite knives even though it’s the worst quality knife I own. 😊
it would be my favorite knife too...keep it on your desk as a paperweight..you dont want to mess it up doing chores and its always in view around the house..so she can appreciate too
Sorry to say it but most US knife makers are pricing themselves out of business. When a folding knife cost more that a firearm, things are out of hand.
I agree from some but it's really not there fault, from materials cost and worker cost, cost of living etc going up they have no choice, ofcourse some are being crazy, but some are not. They can provide a half ass knife for less for sure
I would ad, be VERY careful buying Pakistani "Damascus" knives. I am a retired blacksmith who has done a lot of pattern weld. Lots of the Indian sub continent blades are what I call mystery steel. Some are OK but, many are plain junk.
Messing with the pivot voids the warranty on a $1500.00 knife???? Bull shit! What a joke of a company. For $1500 they better warranty it 75 years from now if my great grand son purposely cuts it up with a bandsaw.
Man - if I could sub, I’d sub again. Jerad and Kara - you guys are quickly becoming my primary resource for everything regarding knives. Now, I used to just refer to you for technical specs and references for sharpening tips and best-practice. That’s not the case anymore. Jerad, your opinions are logical and thorough. You’re both considerate and understanding, as you showed humility in the Alien Knives section of this video, but you don’t sugar-coat and you certainly don’t hide your true opinion. *virtual handshake* Kara, the research you performed on Huusk was phenomenal, and well informed. You considered things I never even thought about, and you exude reliability and “with-itness” in your connections with finding it on cheap websites and Huusk’s drop-shipping model. This has really been a step up in quality, and I want to acknowledge and show gratitude for it.
First I would like to say that i consider your channel one of my 4 favorites of any and all available because of your content being an accurate and unbiased source of information, the positive vibe you attempt to promote even in light of negative circumstance, and a seemingly pure care for the knife community as a whole from manufacturer to customer. When I am fortunate enough to get a new knife seen on your channel ( rarely ever handled in person) I have NEVER made a purchase I regretted because the knife was always accurately represented by your review. Last I find it saddening that it has become much more common that so many people attack people with integrity and high moral character which from content I consider you and Kara to be. Thank you for your channel. I respect your opinions an we all support you : ) Although we've never met I consider you a friend.
The content of this video is why I’ll keep watching this channel. It’s hard to call out companies that sponsor or could affect your bottom line. And in doing so and sharing with the community, practices or instances of deception in terms of product or manufacturing. It’s a heads up for folks who aren’t as well versed in how companies in this hobby can behave at times. There’s another channel that I’ll never bother with ever again due to the exact opposite of their behavior towards a custom maker that was being deceptive about their product because the channel was “friendly” with them and didn’t want to burn bridges. Meanwhile they were lying to customers about blade steel and country of origin, marketing and charging a premium for their products. Cheers to Jared and the research department. Great stuff ❤❤
@@thermaltoyzngear3310 Cedric has only tested low performance m390. The best m390 he has tested has been tawain Spyderco at 60rc. Spyderco Golden USA has shown they have even better performance at 60rc and go up to 62rc. Cedric has also not tested Reates secondary hardening m390 that has harder carbides in the microstructure. So I wouldn't base your opinions on it. Heck his d2 testing makes it look better than it actually is. Rope cut testing also varies depending on behind the edge thickness but he doesnt include those numbers. I enjoy the tests and the data he has, but at least I understand the bigger picture and can extrapolate with bte, heat treat protocols involved and comparison to the cardboard cut testers. If he has knives that are thinner behind the edge the numbers go way up. So your not testing the heat treat at that point. The knife is using bte thickness as a crutch to get higher numbers. Check out his d2 test with 4 knives. Dozier d2 did better despite being thicker behind the edge and lower hardness. But it had a better microstructure due to a proper heat treat. Something you dont notice off the cuff with rope cut testing. This is why cardboard testing is extremely important, behind the edge thickness matters less in these tests and their testing the actual microstructure of the heat treat.
As a new viewer of your channel, I would like to thank you for your work and research. That Alien knife looked very rough. One could forgive them for having issues with that knife because it was a hand made early release (prototype?). However, their dishonesty is a hard stop. Thank you for calling them out.
Thank you for telling the truth. We unfortunately live in times where "bad things" (the truth) are to be covered up so no one knows. It's refreshing to see someone out here that still tells the truth about something that people spend money on. It's always the best policy to tell the truth to customers, and more companies need to start doing this. We all understand there may be potential issues with manufactured goods, however we also expect those problems to be corrected or made right in some way. It's always a real disappointment when a manufacturer tries to dodge taking care of a customer(Yes Hogue I'm talking about you who wouldn't admit to anything being wrong with your Magnacut and you who would not replace a soft blade on my knife). As a customer and buyer of knives, every penny I spend is taken seriously and those we buy from should also be serious when we have problems. Thanks again for being brave enough to tell the truth Jerad. And Kara, thank you too.
Glad you talked about Alien Knives. Sorry I dragged you and Super Steel Steve into that whole ordeal. He ended up refunding my money and I pulled my Instagram rant down. Still, one of the most unprofessional makers I have dealt with and really turned me off to the knife community. I enjoy watching a few knife reviews that you, Stassa, Cedric and Ada, and Outpost 76 put out but not like I used to. I almost quit buying any knives nowadays. Thanks again for the support!
Man that sucks that it ruined your vibe for the whole hobby. And don’t apologize for contacting me, I am glad you did. I hope we can have your around the community more often and not let one bad Apple ruin it for you. There are so so so many great people and sub-communities within this hobby. The great characters massively outweigh the bad ones. Hopefully we inspire you to get a new shiny knife soon 😊
Your bad experience may have saved others from going down the same road. Alien didn't handle that situation as best as he could have but he did make it right in the end with the refund. Seems like he has to head back to the drawing board to iron out the details of his knife making process. And there are really fine people in the knife community. I liken it to a church in the sense that the community really is a community. Most everyone in the hobby is respectful, kind, generous and good-natured. As it grows the community is bound to attract some bad actors, but by and large most everyone follows an unspoken rule to treat each other with respect and compassion. Glad you're still around though. If you're ever bored on a Wednesday or Saturday night stop by one of the Neeves lives. Usually for the first hour we talk knives and then the second hour is a short cologne review, a story about Jerad's past and then anything goes after that point. The other people in the chat bring their own benevolent chaos into the mix too. If you want to network a bit more into the community its one of the best places to do so is all I am saying.
@@NeevesKnives Thanks Jerad! I get you and most people in the knife community are awesome! Again, I appreciate the support on the Alien Knives issue. I ended up tossing the knife in the trash, I felt it was that bad! I'm still around and like a lot of knives just not being as vocal or purchasing any right now. Thanks again!
@@SeemsLogical Thank you! Appreciate it. I used to watch Neeves live a lot. Would comment and be a part of the experience. I should get back into it again. Thanks again!
I love videos like this, guys. Great info Jerad, & I LOVE the research segment from Kara about the Huusk knives. There are a lot of companies that try to make their poorly-made knives which consist of materials that would not be desirable for the properties of high-quality cutlery, sound super fancy by using flowery language in their marketing. Shame, shame!
The biggest takeaway from this, and also what I appreciate the most is Neeves (husband/wife) aren't telling you what to do, they're providing information. Knife world common sense if you will. Based on experience, etc. What we like is based on personal preference, but what you see might not be what you get. A+
Dude, I seriously wanted to thank you for this video. Up until just recently the last knife I bought was a Spyderco police model and I bought that knife in 1995 maybe 94. I was recently at a get-together where someone was bragging about their Huusk knife. The very next day I looked them up Oh, I thought they had a certain appeal but something kept me from pulling the trigger several times and I'm so glad it did. I was actually about to do some due diligence, then.. your video. Thanks again keep rocking I dig your show.
Kamikoto is another one that falsely advertises as Japanese. They're all made in China of cheap 420J2 stainless steel with a very expensive price tag for what you get.
Best *value* knives I have are from Dexter. I have a kitchen knife from their Sani-Steel line and a fillet knife I keep while fishing. Dollar for dollar, best knives I've ever bought. I'd love to see you review some of these and give your thoughts, since they're advertised as made in the USA but they're extremely well priced.
Bro, thanks for sharing! Thankful for information sharing like this..some companies get away with so much. We need information sharing to be able to make the best possible decision we can when purchasing or referring knives. A great way to get some accounting for these companies poor actions. I got a few I wouldn't recommend a d would caution people against as well.. I'm sure we all do. I'll bet there's a lot of similar experiences with the same offenders...good post
Just one correction... Quercus acuta, the Japanese evergreen oak is a very common kind of tree in that area. Japan has lots of oak trees, they are just different from White Oak and other oak trees you guys have in the US.
Try the Mtech MX8070 Raptor Bowie knife.. That knife is better and stronger then Ka Bar..and more US made knives..but i understand your point.. But dont let you fool by made in China.. If you pay..its unbelievble how good China can make good knives..but i trust US made knives the most.. I like Ontario USA very much..I have the Ontario SP10 Raider Bowie and the Ontario M9 bayonet..the Ontario militair machete 1-18..Great knives. And i have a lot of USA Bayonets..M1 garand from Union Fork and Hoe..M5-A1..M6 from Milpar..M7 from Bauer ordnanse Corp..i love those US Bayonets..
Very informative! I almost ordered some of those Huusk knives last year but didn't because of most of the same reasons you mentioned. The ad just didn't sound right.
I purchased a couple of Eafengrow EF953 folders and have been pretty pleased with them. The only drawback is that the joint has loosened a bit on one of them. Fortunately, they're secured with Torx screws, so they should be fairly easy to tighten.
@@SteansonParksJr I learned a long time ago that knives are not screwdrivers, pry bars, or whatever else pops into your mind in the moment. They're for cutting, and cutting only.
I also got caught up in the Husk hype. I thought it would be a nice birthday present for m wife. I thought I ordered one and it turned out I ordered 4. The website is scammy that way that it pushes you to order more than one. I contacted them immediately after my order and they said they would try to change it. They did not and now I am giving away knives to my friends for birthdays or what ever. Cool looking knife. Cheap, so whatever. I knew it was not that high quality. I just thought they were unique.
Nice review. What I like about MTech knifes, though, is that it’s a $10 knife. If it gets dull, I throw it away. If I lose it, no big deal, and for what I need a knife for, it’s fine. Personally, I can’t justify buying a 2 or $300 knife. I’d rather buy a Ruger pistol instead !
I buy several $1.25 pocket knives at Dollar Tree when they get any in instead of paying double at Walmart. Last time I had to wait two years for my local Dollar Tree to get some in stock. I loose them somehow every once in a while so there is no sense spending more money on them. I put the one I currently use on my keyring. Hopefully I don't loose this one. These cheap knives do everything I need for Every Day Carry. If I am going to need something better, I grab one of my better knives.
If Eafengrow had an issue with their metal and then resolved the issue, then it's not an issue anymore and that was a fixed issue way before this video. I've got a couple Eafengrow fixed blades and they're great. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an Eafengrow knife.
I said that, however if the issue was well known and sold for over a year without telling the buyers what does that say about the company? I personally bought a couple to find out it was not the steel advertised and that was well after they were aware. Yet no disclaimer or anything then they said they fixed the issue and that they were safe to purchase when in reality they were not and people again bought knives that were still not ad advertised, awesome that now after being caught so many times and getting kick back that now they are going to sell you the product as advertised. I don't mind issues I look at what was done about it. Do you think it would have been changed if not for so many youtube videos with actual tests that proved what was going on? Or would they still be selling you crap since you don't know and can't confirm? I would rather deal with one of the many companies that care about the products they are selling
I have three known brands that I now tend to avoid. MTech is the only one that I have personally experienced from your list. They are inexpensive beater knives/parts to cannibalize/ throw aways. Gerber, whose quality declined early 90s and I no longer trust after some catastrophic failures. Cold Steel, hit or miss on quality and design flaws, shady marketing, and poor customer service. I will mention that I bought a cheap gas station keychain knife (a folding box cutter) that was so useful, durable, and convenient that it became one of my favorite "travel" knives.
Have several cold steels and 1 Gerber (strong arm ) I bought few years back, have no issues with any of them. I do like the Tops and Esse’s more that any, but I like fixed blades over folders.
I feel that you are beyond fair when it comes to reviewing knives. I trust you whole heartedly. It's sucks cuz I like the looks of the Alien Knives DX2 but just based off of your interaction I'm all good. Even if I got a flawless version, I don't agree with how that went down. A maker needs to own their problems with their product and move forward and rectify the situation.
Ultra patriotic gear made by in other countries.....could not agree with you more. Nothing turns my stomach faster. Just today I had to run to Lowes for something and happened to walk by one of their middle-aisle displays. It was "Americana" shirts........all made in China. I roamed around the store until I found a spare scrap of paper, sharpie, and a bit of a price sticker to use for tape. Wrote "Made In China" on the paper and stuck to the display.
Just need to add KamiKoto Knives to the list. (Ibaraki Steel blades are handcrafted from SUS420J2 steel. With an HRC of 53.) Don’t forget the japanese steel in the chinese “handmade” knives.
I'm actually really glad you mention Eafengrow and what went on there because I wasn't aware. I think I have one from them purchased like 3 years ago somewhere, but I'm glad I didn't buy more and for some reason thought they were similar quality to Ganzo. Wild stuff regarding that Alien guy, waiting for him to show up in these comments.
The worst knife steel I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with was from a local “Custom” knife maker. I was trying to help him out and be a blessing to him, we went to church together so I said sure, I will buy a couple knives to help you get on your feet. Biggest mistake I have ever made, he is shady, his knives were complete junk, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear the Damascus he used come from Iran…. Pure scrape, same as him! To this day it put a bad taste in my mouth for Damascus and I refuse to own any! I don’t care who makes it…
I picked up an MTECH folder back in ‘06 while driving through Canada. Pretty sure I got it at a gas station. It worked until I got back into Alaska where I had my good knife waiting for me. I didnt want to risk the border patrol not letting me through with my good one. I keep it at work now just as a backup.
Bro...I bought that same knife directly from him a while back....that knife is an absolute turd I tried to be nice asking to return or exchange and he was a huge dick about it. Horrible turd of a knife and he's not much better.
I'd avoid Sandrin Knives, at least the Monza knife series. My Ti version has an internal stop pin that is cut to shit by the blade closing or in the closed position. Depending on the pin's orientation, my tweeked blade would stick up proud of the handle in all but one orientation. I took pics and sent it in for service. Their CS simply denied the pin issue was even happening, they reground the blade and even though we talked about replacing the blade ($100 + shipping) they didn't, shipped the knife back then has ghosted me ever since. I sent them several pics of the pin and and how it affects the closed blade.
Great presentation. Informative, accurate, interesting. A few years ago, I traded a beat up Boy scout knife ( '70s ), for a no name large folding Karambit. I had valued the B.S. knife at $30. I'm a dealer and was extremely busy. You can imagine when I found out it was a $5 M tech. It had been a great defense piece. Good balance, ball bearing action, 3 1/2 inch curved blade, and a large finger hole at base. Makes it easy to reverse grips. It was sharp enough. After watching your video, I proceeded to sharpen it. No luck. I will try again with other sharpeners and let you know If I have any luck. Thanks for the info Bob
Like many others, I watch a lot of reviews on knives before I spend my money on a product. I trust you brother, and if you say and SHOW a knife having issues I'll steer clear.
Thank you Jared and Kara for the truthful videos you do and not that I would have bought any of these knives anyway I most definitely thank you for saving me the headache of weather I should or not
This was the first video of yours that I've seen. And I have to admit I was impressed. I know very little about non tactical blades for the civilian market. I.E. knives not intended to be used in hand to hand fighting or in a covert scenario where a gunshot would draw unnecessary attention. So it was good to see which brands to avoid and why. Respect, for your research and presentation.
@@tacticalcenter8658 Ganzo isn't really a respectable company but they are often a "gateway" for people entering into the knife collecting hobby. Say what you will about them stealing designs since it is true, but for people who would scoff at shelling out $100+ for a knife Ganzo can show those people what a quality designed knife can perform like. I think when Neeves Knives was starting out they showcased Ganzo knives. Jerad doesn't really buy them anymore these days because of the stolen designs but he won't deny that he showcased them when the channel was young and he didn't have a revenue stream to speak of yet.
Bottomline is : everybody wants only your money. And I include also companies like Spiderco in this. Once I had a Native Salt, the H2 steel was supposed to be rust free, they had also a video, where they had a knife with this steel in highly concentrated salt water, took it out and it looked like fresh out of the box. I took mine 3 times diving, it started to develop superficial rust stains, although I cleaned it with fish water after diving and dried it with compressed air. I sent the pictures to Spyderco, and they played it down. So basically don't trust anybody, go with the brands you had good experiences so far, like Buck .
I can agree with most of what you have said. having Kara do some research, and presenting what she found was a great idea, she put it together in an easily understandable format. I have done a bit of research into Huusk as well, and found them to be at best shady as hell and at worst an apparent intentional rip off. I don't know if you have ever watched any of my videos on knives, but I am a knife guy from well before you were born, and I can tell pretty quickly if the construction of the knife is something I can trust. I have held a few MTech knives over the years, and would say "gas station" and "Mall ninja" are extremely accurate descriptions of them and many more brands that fall into that level of poor quality. they are, for all intents and purposes all glitz no go. I would add one category to your list. companies that seem to do nothing but knock offs of other designs.
Great video, funny enough i baught an Mtech knife about 13 years ago and believe it or not it is a awesome knife i gave it to my little brother and he still has it, it is a cold steel ti-lite knock off and when i owned it the only issue i had with it was the hardware and that was a very easy fix, but i wont buy another Mtech knife that one knife i did buy was a one in a million chance
Great video. Informative and trustworthy. Kudos for standing your ground in a professional manner and allowing us, the final market, to do with it what we will (may?). Love the research department! Killed it on this one…(and 5 others). Peace, love, and pivot grease
Good analysis. Never had experience with Alien or Husk knives. I do have several Effengrow knives which I paid $18-$24 each for, all advertised as D2 steel. Due to the low cost, I have carried these EDC or rotated into my carry especially for hard use, "beater" knives instead of one of my more expensive knives. In all cases, after a few years use, from a non-scientific user only perspective, they held up extremely well, and sharpened exactly the same as any of my other D2 steel knives. Admittedly, I am a steel snob. Very picky about what I keep in my collection and especially what I carry/use. The fit and finish, and use characteristics of the Effangrow knives is superb. Similar to $100 range knives easily. I personally never experienced what you described, not to at all denigrate or reduce in any way your test conclusions. Just wanted that out there. I feel and agree with you exactly about Mtech knives and would never own one. Like I said, I'm a steel snob. Peace
I'd say the same for Eafengrow. They SEEM to be be well made and they are pretty smooth too. I thought one guy tested them here on RU-vid and found they WERE D2? I thought I saw a video on here somewhere of that.
Similar experience with my Effangrow. I bought it when I first started building my knife collection. Maybe I was more forgiving of any defects because of the low price, but it was a solid knife.
Great vid talking about how some companies try to sell a product that is a little on the shady side. Either the product itself or the way it is being sold. Unless it says Made in (specific country) you can pretty much bet it's made in China at this point, dont get me wrong there are some amazing knife companies in china but there are some pretty shady ones as well. Lots of products use wording to make it look like their knives are being made in a specific country and it's pretty hard for the average consumer to realize what's going on and price isn't always the telling factor. Also I'd say learn the lesson if you've been scammed before and only trust the honest reviewers with a proven track record vs those who are sponsored to show a product. And if ever in doubt hop into the comments on a live and ask about a specific product most will give you straight up answers as to what you can expect from a specific knife or brand. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and Kara and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
Glad I recently subscribed to you. I now have a ton of Jared-watching hours under my belt and now know enough to, at least, see if you have any reviews about anything I'm interested in buying. I was about to buy a very attractive Mtech knife on eBay which had all the features I'm currently looking for, but after this video I stopped offering the seller ANY amount and declined his eventual selling offer. You're the best Jared!
👏 good thing, if you want actual great quality folding knives for affordable prices I have tons of videos some I recommend more than others, but Mtech I always warn away from
100 percent agree with this video. Other brands I won't buy: Ganzo, Katsu, Chinese Kershaws, and any other generic Chinese brand Amazon garbage knives.
Oh the irony. Mtech is a gas station knife? Well it so happens, that's exactly where I bought one. I was in a pinch, needed a knife(small pry-bar actually😁) and for $20 at the Pilot truck stop, I didn't need to use one of my good expensive knives for a task they're not intended for.😂 Edit/addition: Sounds like Huusk is another Kamikoto. Kamikoto is another shady brand to steer clear of.
The hands down best at it's job knife I've ever owned is my Wusthof Clasic 8" chef's knife. I bought it second hand, it's at least 30 years old. I wouldn't dream of bushcrafting with it, but as far as getting a RAZOR sharp edge and keeping that edge, I'm not convinced it can be beat
MTech. Bought one once that actually had great fit and finish. Was incredibly overbuilt for a folder. Looked great. Felt great in hand. Would take a razor sharp edge, and then proceed to loose the edge before I finished cutting a single potato 😢😢😢 so yes, MTech is definitely off the list!
a lot of these cheap knives use cheap steels that have a lot of chrome in them so they are very resistant to rust but behave just like you noticed... chrome is resistant to abrasion but has a gummy feel when sharpening (and I should know because I worked in a cutlery store for close to 20 years selling and professionally sharpening) you get what you pay for.
I love that Jerad replies to so many of the comments to his videos. I don’t know how he has time to do everything he does. He is definitely working hard for his money!
My experience with the one MTech I own is just the opposite of yours. I have their Trailmaster look-alike. When I say 'just the opposite' I mean that thing has quite possibly the hardest steel I have ever experienced with a knife. Whetstones? Did nothing. Sandpaper? Barely scratched it. I had to take a flat file to it and it still took over an hour to do what I wanted (the factory edge wasn't very sharp so I wanted to convex the secoolndary bevel/edge since I had to sharpen it, anyway). After the file I took sandpaper to it, again, then back to the whetstones then to steel and a strop. I got that thing shaving sharp. I have used it to chop wrist thick maple limbs and have beat on it pretty hard. It isn't a main use knife but it does get thrashed on from time to time and so far I haven't needed to resharpen it or, really, even hone it. It hasn't chipped or anything with my use, either. I guess that is the upside to ridiculously hard steel. I don't know if they still make that model or if they do I don't know if the steel is the same because I have had mine for probably eight or ten years. Do I recommend their priducts? If it will be someone's main or only knife, no. If they want a cheap knife to do things they wouldn't do with their main knife or any, nicer knife, maybe - depending on the model and the price.
Wow! That's awesome glad to hear it, I'm speaking from personal experience with multiple and also knowing the companies that make them at that price they usually in most cases won't be great. However I do know of a couple examples that were different
The research department is failing badly unfortunately. Oak trees are not only native to America, Oak trees do grow all over the northern hemisphere, also in Japan.
I have 2-3 M tech knives I like cheap knives but at least the cleaver one I have it was actually nice to sharpen but I could see how crappy they could be not defending them cause there 10 bucks a knife there cheap thankfully now my budget style knives are upping the price
I thought Liong Mah would be on your list. I've gotten 2 Liong Mah knives in the last month (a KUF 3.0, and a field duty EDC, both in CF) for CHEAP! because of all of the controversy I think. But man are they AMAZING knives! Maybe that's what kept him off your list. Thanks for the great content as always! I love it when your wife joins you on your videos. 2 points of view for the price of 1!
Reate makes Mah's knives. Why would they be on the list? Both make great knives.I have several of both and they are great! My Mah knives were not cheap in price either.I have one in Dallas Cowboys colors. Its beautiful.I would love to sell it.
@@vlkafenryka788 I didn't say it wasn't common knowledge in the knife community, just wondering why someone would think his knives would be on the barred list?
@@knifelyfe6565 sorry if it came off weird .. i meant i hadnt heard anything about liong mah or who OEM's his stuff in a bad way .. so if that is what the OP was talking about it would have surprised me

People don’t understand the differences in difficulties sharpening cheap steel vs expensive steel, like you said cheap steel is like play dough while expensive does take longer to sharpen but the edge tends to last longer!
Yes it is. His production is way above average all around. I think people are so damn impatient, his slower longer format holds him back. But he is one of the very few truly special and unique edc channels in a sea of talking hands opening up boxes.
There's no better way to get the true Japanese style cooking knife experience than to buy a knife that's.......wait for it.....MADE IN JAPAN. You'll pay out of the ass for it, but you have to pay for quality. I f**king hate knife companies that disingenuously promote their products as high quality, when they know they're selling complete garbage to misinformed customers.
Jared holds big clout because his reviews are legit. From cheap civivi all the way down to expensive demkos. I been down with this channel for years. Nice grey by the way. Thanks 4 exposing or rather making us alert to these problems. God bless and thank you.
Subbed, saw you on outdoor55. Love to see one of you knife guys do a "review" or a recap or just a deep dive into the knives used by the Alone participants. Different each season. Mostly these real bush/survival types know a good knife. You are welcome for the idea. :)
Effengrow is hugely a clone company from what I’ve seen. I was given their smf come by a friend in “d2” that went to work with me to beat on and it didn’t hold an edge worth a shit. It also has terrible fit and finish.
THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING! Some of my fav Tubers had this knife on their channels too.. These are NOT the first quality concerns I've heard regarding these knives!!!
Lol had the same experience you had with MTech when a coworker wanted me to sharpen a gas station knife he bought in *Russia* lol. He made it very clear he wanted it *shaaaaaaarp* af. So I was like "ok, gotchu fam." Holy cannoli that thing would not take an edge. Deburring was destroying the edge. Put a 13° edge on it with an 18° micro bevel so I could actually do some edge trailing strokes but I still had to be super careful doing that and on the strop. The blade may as well have been made of coconut oil. He of course immediately sliced himself open at work with it though, and my fellow supervisor was pissed at me because she had to deal with it haha. But it took WAY too much effort to get it that sharp. So not worth it.
I have a Mtech I bought at a sportsman show because it looked kool. I recently tried to use it with a ferro rod and even though it had a square back it only worked on one side and only for a few strokes. I kept trying to square up the edge with several different fillers and a diamond sharpener and every time it would only make sparks on one edge and not the opposite edge. I can only conclude that the steel was not evenly heat treated, or not heat treated at all.
Pete from Cedric and Ada is freaking awesome, almost all the different steel types I've ever bought was because of him and exactly as he described them
