Knowing is 1/2 the battle. When buying new tires, always confirm you got what you paid for. Make sure the size matches your existing ones (or cross check on the driver's door sill label), ensure proper air pressure YOURSELF and drive cautiously to make sure the wheels are torqued properly. As for dates; it is usually printed XXOO, the XX week of OO year of manufacturer.

What a eye opener. I am in need for new tires for my SUV and I came upon this channel. It turns out that the snow tires I had bought for my 2nd vehicle in 2013 were made in 2008. Yeah I bought 5 year old new tires. So right now they are 9 years old and the tread is still good, I would have switched them out without a second thought. The date code was on the inside of the tire which right now was easy to read as they were stored in my garage. I won't mention the name of the store but it is one of the large retailers mentioned in the video. LET YHE BUYER BEWARE.

Having worked in engineering a long time, and large Class 5-8 trucks, there's a LOT you don't know about tires. The DOT date coding is only a PART of the information you should understand. Then, you compound the problem with things like 'what about age MAKES a tire fail?' Aging for a automotive tire is a function of 'drying' or as some say, 'dry rot'. Dry rot is the effects of Ozone and UV light over time. Like a 'fire triangle', remove UV or Ozone, and you remove 'dry rot'. I can hermetically seal a car tire in a capsule devoid of UV light and Oxygen, and pull it out 20 years from now and it will be LIKE NEW in all aspects! I can put a new car tire on an 'open-air' rack in front of a store in Arizona, and in 4-years, it will be deadly. Add in other 'DOT code' data, such as speed ratings, load ratings and the customer FREQUENTLY exceeding them, and you've got catastrophic failure. There's a reason none of this is 'mandated by the government', because it is NOT as simple as a one-sentence basic rule! All tire companies would need to do, to triple the shelf-life of a tire, would be to 'blister-pack' the tires in 10-mil black plastic with a nitrogen gas fill, and your average store could safely keep them on the shelf for 20-years, and then safely sell them to you! The little things you don't know, that this ignorant video didn't explain to you!

See i did buy an 9 yr old tire for my bike and kind of thought what you just said. I had it agaist the wall at home on painted drywall and when i moved it i could not help but notice it was stuck to the paint. Meaning it is not dried up i think it never seen ' the heat directly from the sun. If it was a back tire i would chance it but a front one kind of makes me think twice lol.

I wonder how many people have had a problem with their tires and did the people that had a problem check their tires regularly? If a tire does blow it doesn't have to be a major problem if cool head prevail. Hold the steering wheel straight and decrease the speed and you will survive ,just don't panic. Check your tires pressure and tread wear and you should have no problem. As you eluded to UV rays are the csuse of most tire damage. Thank for the post.

Never had a tire failure not going to change what I do. Been Driving for 45+ years there will always be a warning signs before a tire fails you just got to pay attention and inspect your tires. Everybody now relies on low tire pressure warning sensors don’t see a light on must be all good. That type of thinking will get you into trouble

I actually never knew that tires more than 6 years old shouldn't be used. We have used ones older than that and they were perfectly safe and didn't de-laminate or blow-out. I wouldn't necessarily say age should dictate when tires need to be replaced but the condition of them. If you see cracking in the rubber replace them, if they are excessively worn replace them, slashed: replace, unusual tread wear: replace, won't balance: replace.

This video offers great advice. One thing these tire dealers NEVER talk about is THE most important thing to consider when buying NEW tires... Check the DOT date of manufacture stamped into the sidewall. Selling out-dated 'new' tires is quite common and has caused many accidents and DEATHS! Tires have a total lifespan of only 6 or 7 years and that is INCLUDING time spent in a warehouse regardless of what the tire manufacturers or resellers might say ($$$). It is quite possible to buy 'new' tires that were actually made 6 years OR MORE ago that are already considered to be UNSAFE tires by the leading automobile makers and should not be sold for any price. The tire industry couldn't care less about your safety obviously. Buyer beware.

If air is trapped between the layers or there are wrinkles on the ply itself, failure might occur even before the tread comes off. So we cant only blame the age of the tyre, the way it was made plays a huge role.
@algrayson8965

The date code is by itself. The first two digits are the week and the second two digits are the year since 2000. I had a pickup which spare tire had never been on the road. The wheel lug seats' paint was untouched (paint should be scraped out of the seats of the wheel). It always had 80-85 psi as I would check its pressure occasionally, topping it up if needed. When the truck had a flat, I put the 23(!!) year old spare on. As it was on the front, I let it down to the specified 45 psi. Of course I knew not to use this tire despite it appearing brand new. I intended to use it only to get to the tire store, but intentions get thwarted. The tire came apart in a few hundred miles. It broke. As it was on the front it didn't cause any trouble, just a little inconvenience. If it had been on the back it could have caused a loss of control and a crash.

@@TheBlkac1 There is more to it than that however. In the UK the government has set up a system so that used tires from responsible dealers should be safe. The public clearly has bought in. The problem is that this safety has been subverted by basic greed and if the reporting is accurate it's rampant. Given that reality, drivers need to take responsibility and refuse to buy these tires except from a known and absolutely trusted source. If money was an issue and it's my money I would look for a plainer simpler less expensive car and put top quality brand new tires and brakes on it. Cheaping out on basic safety is stupid. My trucks and vehicles give me about 48 tires to maintain. What a pain in the ass. Buy most online now and they give the dot code. Also Walmart seems to have fresh tires of decent quality. So often I forget to check the date when shopping price and size and tread. Have to keep a bunch of plug kits, or I would be broke. Must say after hundreds + of plugs, never had a blowout. Just carry a spray bottle of soapy water, finds leaks far faster than those Goobers sticking a tire in a tank. The family van gets the best and patches on the inside. Just checked one backhoes tires - tiny leaks in cracks on the sidewall. That's when they gotta go, but pretty hard to get hurt on a machine that rarely sees 10 MPH. It's the WALK AROUND daily that saves your life, but tell your wife that.

I bought Prime Well tires once. I think I aired them up two or three times in 10 years of light use. They tended to crack more than I would have liked.

Tire dates are in plain "language" since the first week of 2000. I put a "brand new" tire on my pickup truck. It was the spare under the rear of the bed. It had never been used. The paint on the lug nut seats was undisturbed. The truck and the tire were 23 years old. The tire date was the old style proprietary gibberish but as it was the original spare I know that the tire was as old as the truck. The tire did fine for a few thousand miles then blew apart at about 30 mph after getting off of a 55 mph highway. Always put your best tires on the rear. A front tire flat or blowout is usually controllable but a rear tire failure can cause a car to swap ends ("do a 180°") but a minivan, SUV, pickup or van will go 90° then roll over.

It's all about information.... We as consumers don't have much knowledge about tires... If we would be better informed , then we would choose newer produced tires. Then the sale stores would trie to keep in stock less older tires by trying to sell sooner the older ones by using better discounts for these... The result of this will be; less older tires in stock

Sounds more like ReTreads
@damianramey5601
@damianramey5601 4 года назад
Tires can most certainly dry rot and blow apart, but a tires tread is not just going to come off unless you went the cheap skate way and bought tires that are retreaded, OR was sold a tire that was retreaded unknowingly. Retreads are tires that have worn out original tread, then the owner or tire shop will more or less adhere new tread to the old rubber. This is extremely dangerous if you don't use those tires properly. Trucking companies do this for cost effectiveness but are only authorized to use them on the trailers where they can maintain control of the vehicle when the tread falls off.Other info you should know, BF Goodrich is notorious for faulty tires and have issued tire recalls over and over, as well as been the center of numerous lawsuits.

Also when this film was being done they were a lot of tires called recaps. Recaps are now illegal except for on government vehicles, specifically department of corrections vehicles. There are many cars out there with tires that are 10 years old in the tires of been tested and found to be perfectly fine.

It's a wonder that they are even legal on government vehicles. I suppose it's only a matter of time before they do become illegal on those too.

When tire are manufactured, they are Vulcanized, that is they are heat cured as they are in the mould where the tread pattern is formed and the rubber compounds are formed around the basic tire blank. Under pressure and heat changed the rubber compounds to long chain molecules, this give strength and flexible 'life' to the new tire (tyre). as time goes by the rubber has a tendency to degrade back to what it was in the beginning. Environmental conditions and exposure to air will affect this in many ways. Mostly making the rubber brittle, bad road surfaces and flex will cause separation of the rubber bonds and this can and will spread along belt lines and any joints or bonding areas. These areas are weak points that mechanical and high G forces act on and this is where separation can happen. The faster the tire rotates means the fracturing will be more pronounced. Lower highway speeds will lesson the effect of separation. Retread tires are still being made but are more likely to fail as the bonding is not good between the old and new rubber compounds. Many state laws do not allow these tires on the steering axle of vehicles. Old tires usually show surface cracks and this means the vulcanizing bonding is breaking down just like an old rubber band.

Attire ages differently when it's on a car that when it's off of a car. A tire that has been cycle and used may very well last much longer than a car that has never seen use. At least according to this report. In the 1960s man came to the Bonneville Salt Flats with tires on a motorcycle that were 20 years old and he set 9 world speed records with it. Seems to me that it would be easy enough to make tires that can sit on a shelf for a few years. Perhaps that's why years ago you saw tires were wrapped up so they wouldn't have a tendency to dry out? Just wondering? I remember when the Goodrich ta radial came out, and when they were brand-new the tread was separating from the tires. I think the problem is more in the way that tires are assembled then shelf life. But that is only a supposition on my part. Considering the vast number of times I've seen people driving vehicles with under-inflated tires oh, I wonder if it's the age of the tire or the way it was used that caused it to fail. An under-inflated Tire gets far warmer than it is supposed to get and will indeed fail much quicker than a tire that's 20 years old before you ever put on a car.

Age of the tires may not have been the only factor in that kids demise. The tires could have been underinflated, not a sufficient load range, mounted on the rim incorrectly or driven at too high a speed. Could also have been simply a manufacturing defect, which is not uncommon. Always inspect your tires before every significant journey.

Usually when the tread comes off the tyres then the tyre is a retread. Non retread tyres are manufactured as one piece but as for retreads they are old tyres that have been given a new rubber tread. And usually they have a speed limit of 100kms. If u exceed then the tread will come off.

Those Tire pieces on the sides of the roads, (that have blown) are mostly large transport tires, Big trucks go past my place continually with flat tires (you can hear them)and they just keep going until they disintegrate and fly right off the rims. Hi-ways are littered with them, a hazard.

Thx, that was eye opening. I wonder if tyres are built better these days or do these risks still exist in 2017? I guess it's physics, entropy. Perhaps a wise consumer would look through the lens of physical reality rather than believe the promises of a tyre retailer?
@paulanderson79
@paulanderson79 7 лет назад
It's worth being very scrupulous when it comes to tyres. The rubber compounds can, and do, still age. Storage conditions will play a part. Similarly, tyres mounted on your car will age. So if you're a low mileage driver you might well be replacing your tyres due to age rather than wear. When I buy tyres I always go for something that's fairly recently released. A new tyre in a manufacturer's range can;t possibly be warehouse aged. I bought a pair of Dunlop SP SportMAXX RT2 in June. The tyre dealer offered me a slight discount if I went for its immediate predecessor. I declined.

U probably got a slow leak from a screw/ nail in the tread or maybe a leak from the new valve stem... lower psi, overheats the tire & eventually blows out. Don't skimp on road hazard warranty & they'll probably replace it.

My dad owned a used tire shop for 30 years and we sold tires that were 15 years old and never had one person come back with tread coming off. Now if there is visible dry rot then no you can not put that tire on your car. A 15 year old Tire as long as it's not dry rotted the tire is just fine. The year in my opinion does not matter. This guy is talking about tires that are sitting in a warehouse out of the weather these tires will definitely still be in good condition for years after its original manufacture date.

Disagree.. Depends on the climate and a lot of other factors. Had a 7 year old brand-name winter tire (stored under a cover over the off-seaons) literally turn into plastic with probably 90% tread left. Hard as a rock. Dry rot means plasticizers are gone...and you can't always tell by looking at it as there might not be visible cracks in the sidewall (this tire just had a few hairline cracks). It's about stopping distance as well...not just if the tire disintegrates while driving.
