Great review with good detail. My Beyerdynamic 770 Pros just broke and I'm thinking about stepping it up. For those worried about quality, my 770 Pros were used 6 to 8 hours daily for seven years and worked perfectly the entire time. The tensioner at the point where the cable enters the headphones split and pulled the cable out. This can be repaired but I'm lousy at soldering and this is my opportunity to get better reference headphones for mixing and editing my songs.
Josh sais "It doesn't give a shit about 30 Hz!" Its true, I got them today! Throw anything up against these bad boys! I changed the earpads to Dekoni extra large memory foam leatherette. They are phenomenal on the Darkvoice Tube Amp. I am not a professional, I am an audiophile and critical listening is my thing. Incredible separation and tonality.
IMO by far the best headphones in this price range. Absolute mind-blowing resolution, no audible distortion, warm but very clean sound profile without the harshness of the cheaper models from beyerdynamic or DT1990... for bass heavy music this is a dream of a headphone!!! Also build like a tank.. ;)
I've had these for 5 years now (bought in early 2017) and they're truly built like tanks and I don't baby these at all. Use these as a daily driver for commuting and also listening through an Oppo HA-2 both on the go and at home and they really shine through that amp. Amazing headphone with audio quality that makes them worth so much more than their asking price. Came from AKG-702, AKG K550s and man their resolving detail is phenomenal. Only downside is now you really have to use high end audio files to maximize their performance but when you do, sonic heaven.
@@philipstrotherjr8842 spec's wise i think the dac/amp you mentioned has slightly more power than the HA-2 that i'm using so I believe that it should be fine! The DT 1770 are actually pretty efficient for 250ohm headphones
@@Borko781 Hey there, I ended up selling them, and upgrading to some ZMF Aeolus and Atticus. The DT1770 are great headphones, when paired with a good tube amp.
Just ordered these headphones after watching this review. Really enjoyed watching amazing b-rolls, and a good deep review of the headset. Keep up the good work!
Man, your reviews b roll are always so top notch, you need more subs dude! Also, I wish you put the exact name of the songs and artists you recommend in the description of the video.. Can miss the exact name sometimes, especially when it's a very old one
I run an Ifi Zen v2 with my DT770 Pro 80 Ohm. They sound perfect with fantastic deep bass without the truebass. If I press the truebass it just gets uncomrtable with too much bass. But when I listen to my Elegias the truebass is mandatory for the right balance. A very good DAC and higly recommended for listenig to different headphones.
@robertaksland1471 I'm looking for a model for listening to really deep sub bass like EDM/trance and such. Like the concerts Tomorrowland and Luminosity. But I also like all kinds of metal. Do you think 770 Pro might fit me? The 1770 Pro are a little bit expensive for my liking. My budget qre 200-400 euro.
i fucked up and fell into the Headphone rabbit hole. I started watching these vids about 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have purchased these headphones (DT 1770 Pro) and a Audioengine D1.
iv owned the Sennheiser HD 595, the AKG K240 MK2, And the Beyerdynamic DT770. And its true how you state Beyer´s as a "Bass King". Even though that was also the reason why i swapped to the (in comparision extremly meek) (read neutral) K240´s. im mixing Uplifting Trance which is very layered, so i really needed that neutrality. Something that in my opinion really stands out with Beyerdynamic in general (it seems), is the ability to make something sound so live & big that you feel you are really there for real.
Watching this review of the DT1770s w/ my just arrived DT1770 250s. I totally agree to all what you said. These are probably the best headphones I own, yet!
BTW for those who are wondering where the harp is, it's at 30 and 36 seconds of "Star Wars: A New Hope". HOWEVER, there are a few versions of the theme song and some have the harp at the aforementioned times, and other versions don't. Whether that is due to the quality of the recording or just omission idk, but I found that interesting.
@@asr1143 Although you can drive these with a phone, it will not bring up their full potential. I would certainly get an amp for these. I have a Fiio K5 and they can very easily drive the amiron home.

I enjoy your comparisons, and noticed you haven't done any with this headphone as far as I can tell. I'd be keen to see one or two (closed or open headphones, doesn't have to be just one type), as I do have a couple existing headphones, so having a point of reference outside of just the 1770 vs the 770, makes a purchase decision so much easier.
Just spent 90 minutes, changing the dam pads, with my fingers saw worse that a 72 hour gaming session... Can't believe you can finesse them on the way you did lol, you live and learn!
Okay, so I have a question. I’ve decided these are the headphones for me from everything I’ve heard about them. I want to know what sub £200 amp would be best for these headphones? I want to use them with a Nord Grand digital piano, Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 3rd Gen Audio Interface, and also with an iPad Pro for Hi-Res Lossless music listening. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I got the dt 770 pro 250 ohm edition & they’re great. Had them for what i think is some 5 years & they’re still perfect. Use them for cod & gaming i can even connect them to my ps5 controller & chat w the homies & all. Only problem i have w these is the bass. It could be way louder but still helps & saves my life w the sound whoreing capability on cod 🤣. I’m also into music production & just want a second pair of headphones for when the homie comes through to record
This makes me want to listen my dusty old DT1770's again that have been collecting dust on the table for 3 years now. But yeah, when they were new the right side driver failed after 6 months of use, but it got fixed on warranty. Still have a buzzing issue though with static electricity, unfortunately. Just gotta make sure to not be too "charged up" with static electricity, lol.
Great review. Been meaning to check out the 1770. Joshua, make sure to check out the Sennheiser HD 300 when it comes out this year (Aug 2018?). It's based on the classic studio can the HD 250 Linear - some of the most accurate mids out there, very open soundstage (was one of the first Diffuse-Field tuned cans and it was done well).
Just a note, most onboard soundcards aka pc motherboard sound cards, will support up to 600ohm headphones.... meaning you can use these with most newer motherboards that are gamer style (obviously budget motherboards wont)
They’re the best for making music. So accurate so precise. Anything else is just audiophile mumbo jumbo. They are heavy and can get warm but that’s the only downsides.
its pronounced bay-suh-may mucho lol and that is a great song. I bought the dt770's recently and they are great but I definitely want to get these once I save a bit more money and get a better interface than the scarlett 2i2.
That b roll, the fact you edited is amazing, love the quality, also i find this to be not really warm but Idk what else to call it lol, I love the dt 1770 and 1990, but sold them away, Also remeber the Bluetooth speaker with boom not so much punchy as say the jbl, well life got busy and i basically worked out all the electronic stuff, so I am going to take since pto and tune this thing next weekend, so far with the test speakers it really impressive, ill send one over once I am done
Just bought the headphone based on your review. I agree with pretty much everything you say, i hate it that i know what the flaws are now. But thats the downside of being educated :) . This headphone rocks for electronic base music tough, vocals not so much cause of the siblant.
thanks for this great review, very well articulated. loved it. Although I'm not producing and just an audiophile consumer, I love detail and crispness. Many describe the beyerdynamic sound as to "agressive". What would be a mellow/chilled headphone in your opinion in that 300-400$/€ range I wonder? I'm using a RME Babyface Pro as DAC and my DT770 broke, so I'm researching a replacement. Thanks and happy holidays.
I recently switched to the DT 1770 Pro (250 Ohm) from the 770 (80 Ohm) and what became immediately apparent is the lower base sound as stated in this review. This headphone is in a different class in my opinion. The 1770 is more detailed and the sound image is indeed better. But when listening to less well mastered music, it is definitely audible when compared to the 770. It is heavier and more tight on the head and might be uncomfortable after a few hours of listening.
Yes, thats the problem with it. Thing is however, even for professional use, dt1990 is better. But, think about this guys. Taxes and shipping, probably rounding out at 600. Now, the aeon flow c is THE REFERENCE in my opinion. 200 more. Closed as well, so u get those micro details. Better overall tuning than the dt series, so i'd go with that.
Great review! But consider it’s being a closed back headphone how would you choose between this one and foster tr-x00, based on the overall performance
Hi, Josh. Which of the two cables you used for the review? Just wondering... I have a theory about this, tested on my DT1770s, that might prove metal571 wrong when it comes to bass detail. He only used the coiled cable, which I also found it affected bass accuracy. But the straight one... Oh, man! I almost send my cans back ('cause I also used the coiled cord for my initial tests), but then I decided to switch cables. And I'm glad that I did. Maybe it's just me, but I think the straight cable works much, much better.
Nice and honest review. You say that they need some power to drive them well, as is normal for a hi impedance headphone like my present AKG K.501, but what power do they really need to sound good? I also want to buy a new dac-amp that will work with this set, and I am considering a Topping DX3 pro or an S.M.S.L M500.
The focal Elegia has great sound but heavy, tight headclamp and too fatiguing. The Denon 7200 was perfect but pressed down too hard on my head, the Aeon 2 closed sound is not as good as the 7200. I’m tired of searching for a headphone I can wear without fatigue in the office and which sounds good. Please recommend... has to be under $1000 and comfy to wear with 7200 like sound.
This review is quite helpful! Plenty of description to go on. I wonder if this would make a good addition to the Fidelio X2 and HD 595, which are both open 🤔
Fidelio X2 are great and prob. the best value for money headphones out there. DT1770 have same levels of bass but way better resolution in every regard. Soundstage is really good for a closed headphone too, imaging superb. Build quality and comfort perfect!!!
I have money that i have saved up and i was wanting this or its 1990 counter part for streaming, gaming , recording and editing Would u reccommend this or the 1990. Pls help
I've not used the Fostex but Beyerdynamic specializes in flat response and clarity. You would be happy with Beyerdynamic but you should get the open back. I use closed back to block outside noise but with hip hop you're going to need the open back for mixing. Otherwise, you could easily add too much bass. If you're just listening for pleasure and you're not needing to mix, then I'd recommend something like a Grado - SR325e.
Nice video man. I wanted to know if you are going to test the DT 990 and DT 770 ? I want to buy them for my smartphone, LG G7 thinq. I wanted to ask you for a minute will you test audiophile smartphone like the G7 in the future ?
Loved this review and love the DT 1770 pro sound, but it’s time for some new ones now, what would you recommend that’s closed back and similar to the 1770 pro’s sound??? Thanks.
If you like the sound of your DT 1770 why would you want to replace them or buy another headphone? Stop being headphone collector. If you like DT 1770, but want something similar yet very different I'd say get DT 1990 Pro. It complements DT 1770 Pro very well. 1990 excels in the highs, 1770 in the lows. 1990 also has wider soundstage.
Hmm metal571 said the bass was very one note, he even mentioned that the 770 has more detailed down there. The bruh is not a shiller, in fact Beyerdynamic cut contact with him after that review. Very interesting :/
Hey Josh did you tried Shure SRH1540 ? I have DT770 250 ohm and i'm looking for upgrade (closed back). DT1770 and Shure SRH1540 exact same price. I heard more positive things about Shure. I love my DT770. I love airy sound.
I’m currently using the Oppo PM-3, and my left ear cup stopped working after a year and a half. I’ve been looking for a good upgrade, but I’m not really too keen on getting headphones that require a external amp. Any suggestions as to what would suit me better? If there are battery powered amps that can power it properly I might still get these.
are you still happy with the 1770? i am extremly happy still using my creative E5. and got some Dekoni hyrbid Sheepleather skin pads for them. it makes them super comfortable.
Idk why, but i watched this review with my DT 1770 Pro's. lol... Anyways, I love these headphones. Highly recommend the Dekoni Elite Velour earpads for them as well!
