The Beyerdynamic DT series of professional headphones are fully modular in construction and are designed to have all parts serviced and/or replaced as necessary. One area of these headphones that will wear out after several years of hard use is the earpads and the foam that covers the inside of the earcup. Fortunately Beyer have made replacing them a fairly simple exercise, although it does involve a hairdryer! Watch the video to see how it's done.
I have owned this particular pair of DT770s for over ten years and have replaced the headband twice and the earcups three times. They are truly built to last!

Thanks for the video. Two things I just found out putting new ear pads for the first time: 1. It's easier to pop out the ring from the inside. Just insert a flathead screw driver (as parallel as possible to the pads) and leverage it up. 2. Putting the new ear pads on can be done without a hair dryer (it's night here, so I didn't want to wake up the house). When you put on the pad "lip" at the bottom, don't put it all the way in but just enough so that the bottom doesn't slip out. This will give you more room to work with as you put the rest of the pad on. When the whole ear pad is on, just stretch it around so that the lip has the same cover all around. Good luck!

Actually, there is a FAR, FAR easier method of slipping-on the earpads: Simply fold-back the entire plastic lip, and then flip it over the headphone cups. EASY!

the sound quality is really good on the dt 770 pro but the pads and headphones itself are so small. I have small ears and even then it's a tight fit. Cheaper headphones for some reason are more comfortable and fit around the ear better since they are oval shaped and not circular

Just done it for the first time in my life! No heaters, only hands. Man, it was frustrating at first, not knowing what to do, but with your vid I understood that I shouldn't be so gentle with the edges. I flipped them back to maximize their stretchiness, and I held with my hand every bit of progression of putting those edges on the cap. Thank you. ♥ Replaced my DT770 Pro's earpads after almost three years. My new headband is almost here too to replace the old crumbling one. I LOVE my DT770. ♥

The B-D instructions (in English, that is) don't say to use a bread knife. They say "a flat, dull knife". I inferred that to be a thin butter knife (for example). They probably advise that over a screwdriver because even flat-head screwdrivers tend to have sharp corners that could in theory cause damage if you slip. But then as you've shown, it's easily doable. (I very much appreciate the video, btw. I just replaced the pads on my DT 770 for the first time and it was easy, thanks to you!)

Top tip if you can't heat the pads: if you first **invert** the flexible ridge all the way round and then flip it back, it stretches the ridge enough that I was able to attach them as easily as this video made it look, with no heating required. NB: this may be technically not as nice as doing it the heating way, since you're stretching it cold it's going to tighten back less than if you heated it. Worked for me though, and AFAICT it looks nice as this video's results.

I find it that regardless of heating, flipping them outwards\inverting them first, then placing the pads to the ears and flipping back is much much much faster and easier to do than the method shown in the video. With heating it would be even easier.

Excellent tutorial thank you so much, just replaced mine. For anyone struggling with the second part, and without a hairdryer, I found that flipping the black band that's meant to latch on inside-out helps, that way after you have the first part on you're working from the outside rather than trying to get your fingers inside it. Flipping it inside and out a couple of times too made it seem more pliable in general too. The flathead is helpful for pushing the final bits in between the pinch points

Excellent video, good visuals with clear narration! These Beyerdynamic are produced since 4000 years, they are just somewhat updated over time. They do not look fancy, there are no marble cups and no platinum plating. As a result, their price is relatively lower compared to other quality headphones. And because they don't keep on changing their products with every season, we can get spare parts for almost everything.

Thank you. I let mine deteriorate to the point of being able to see the foam inside. So this has been long overdue. I did find it to be a super easy process. I used the larger flat-head from a computer screwdriver set, to loosen ones side. Then I was able to pull off the ring with my fingers. Then I warmed the pads for about a minute each, maybe less, on the warm setting with high fan speed. I made sure to first point the dryer so air got inside the edges, then went around the outside. They went on super easy, and I had both on in minutes.

Just wanted to comment and say thank you. This is the second time I've been to this video, the first was to remove the original pads for cleaning (the silver ones.. I had no luck getting that dingy color out of them) and now to replace them with the black pads. I would only add 1 tip if you are having trouble with the last part like I was... at the last part I hold the outer shell of the earcup in the palm of my hand, also holding what I've got on the earpad trim... then I just stretch the pad out from the inside with my other hand if that makes any sense. This way I didn't have to use my fingers trying to pry the trim out. I also used a few seconds of high heat beforehand for a bit of extra pliability. I noticed a crack in mine in the plastic part of the headband, hopefully there are replacements of those too if it ever breaks.

I have DT 1990 Pro's and I'm in the process of ordering new pads now. They seem very similar to the 990's so this video is helpful. I am going to take these old ones out tonight and try to wash them but I want to buy some new ones just to have. You also gave an amusing tip about not using a heatgun; if you're reading this, don't use a heatgun on any household items. If you don't know what a heat gun is.. imagine if a hairdryer just kept getting hotter until it could ignite things and heat items over 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't use that casually.

I took mine off the first time just to see if I could. The horror when I tried to put them back on!! Must have the knack now though as followed this OK without needing a hairdryer. Thanks for the video.

Yes, if the pads have already been on they have 'stretched to fit' so to speak - new pads are much less co-operative 😉

be careful when removing the locking ring. i dont know if this happens on all models, but on my 770's the locking ring also holds in the speaker, gave me quite the shock when it fell out during cleaning. Its easy enough to put back but its definitely something to be aware of.

also a tip: don't get the black plastic too hot. It is just optical but the material gets too soft and flexible, making it easier to put it on but it won't look like original. So slow down, only slightly hot and do the dragging from underneath like it is shown in this video. Also, use your old pads for practise ;)

3:10' the BEST tool is defo a DENTIST TOOL ! (not the pin sharp one, the flat spatula type one, found cheap on eBay), it's thinner and narrower than your screwdriver and roundish edges, perfect that job at 7:45' I have a similar ring on my espresso coffee machine and that's my tool of preference ! nice vid. thks for sharing :)

I came here because I removed the thin black pads and didn't know how to put them back in. I didn't know the hairdryer trick to get the silver pads back on. I just flipped out the entire "flexible ridge"and then flipped it back. I don't know if this would stretch out brand new ones.

Some people manage to do it that way - the problem is that the points where the yoke attaches tend to get in the way.

Thank you very much! Without you I guess I would have had to trial and error on this instead of a smooth success. Didn't need to warm on the last part though because I was using the old pads. Just had to replace both the thin parts. (I have about 15 years old DT990pro -model - still a true workhorse in my studio and overall one of _the_best_ headphones I've used. And only parts needed to replace were the thin soft parts that had degraded because of my eyeglasses frames poke them all the time)

I am not sure HOW one can manage to rip the stuff apart, but oh well... I just did a solid wash on my earpads, and now they, LOOK, SMELL and FEEL oh so fresh and great. In fact, you do not even need to use a hairdryer to put on the earpads. On my DT770 Pros, I just used my hands to put the earpads on again, and it went on smoothly and with no problems. Keyword: Patience. Just be patient and don't rush putting them on. Take on the earpads little by little. Begin where there are little to no room to wiggle the earpad on (some areas are tighter than others). Keep on holding firmly onto the leather part as you wrap the leather part of the earpads slowly around the headphones. That way, won't slide off that easily. Eventually, you will get the leather part in place in no time. The same with taking off the earpads; don't rush with it. Pull them off (by holding onto the velour) little by little and slowly. Once you get off a little, the rest will come off nicely. Good luck. Heck, I might even make a video on it once these earpads get dirty again.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 5 лет назад
The reason you had no problems is that you are putting the used earpads back on - the new ones are much tighter as they haven't been stretched out through use ;)

Very helpful guide, thank you :) You can add MX300 to the title, as it is exactly the same regarding earpad replacement! I used a screwdriver instead of the recommend non pointy knife and it was so much better! Actually it is quite easy to get the ear cups on again with bare hands.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions Год назад
Thanks for watching! Yes I have found since making the video that a screwdriver of the correct size works best - the danger of course is that if you slip you will probably damage something. I suspect that the ideal tool will be something like what is used to remove automotive trim pieces, but that's for another video ;)
@Blue_Monkey
@Blue_Monkey Год назад
@@GLBProductions *flat screwdriver. Tbh it does need very little force and if one is careful it will be no problem. I ask you again to at least add the MX 300 to the description if not the title. It will help people with the MX 300 to find your great video :) more help provided, more clicks and potentially even subs :) win-win for everyone!

Hey man, so i've basically been getting rattling in my right ear speaker on my dt 990 pro. I found that it was because i had hairs on the driver membrane. And me (being stupid) decided that it was a good idea to use my METAL tweezers. It stuck the the magnet and the membrane is now stuck to it. My warranty has gone (by 1 month) how do i unstick the membrane from the magnet?
