You can understand this as greater China. Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong Province of China are pure Cantonese speaking areas, while people in other parts of China, Singapore and Taiwan usually speak Mandarin. The difference between Cantonese and Mandarin is much greater than that between American English and British English. Although Mandarin and Cantonese have almost the same grammar and characters , some vocab and pronunciation are very different. Although I can speak Mandarin, I can understand and simply speak cantonese because I like Hong Kong music. Cantonese is more suitable for singing and has more tones. Creators often need to ensure the combination of tone of the every single word and melody of the song. And miraculously, they did, so Cantonese itself sounds like singing. You can listen to Eason's songs, "十年" and "明年今日".Or “爱情转移” and “富士山下” One is the Mandarin version and the other is the Cantonese version. They have the same melody but completely different lyrics. I hope you can experience the subtle differences. In the 1980s, Hong Kong played an important role in the popular culture of Greater China because of its economic rise.
