Great review but seriously this is just absolutely hideous looking from every angle. Not sure what’s going on with BMW design but they ruined the 4 series, 3 Series M & then there’s the new 7 Series with those horrible divorced headlights.
Fortunately looks are only subjective. Here in the UK the models you mentioned save for the upcoming 7 series, are runway hits, returning insane sales figures.
This is my first of your videos. Well done...the only review that shows the hood-open pulls. It's worth mentioning BMWs electric motors: no magnets. No rare earth elements. And therefore, no drag. One inherent shortcoming with using rare-earth metals in EV motors is the drag in magnetic fields remaining continuously active. This is why Teslas always and almost all other EVs drag like you're riding the brakes. BMW EVs can coast like a conventional torque converter transmission.
After years of watching Alex's videos I have learned two things, the first is that his partner is 6'5", the second is his partner isn't allowed to drive the cars, always a passenger. 😂
@@idonotcarenow I have never seen his partner so I have no idea what gender they are and he has also never said he was married. My mother watches a lady on RU-vid that calls the man she has been with for decades and has 4 kids with and owns multiple homes with "her husband" but they are in fact not actually married so technically he's not. 🤷♂
I wanted to buy the lyriq but I had 2 big problems with the cadillac; ground clearance is too low (almost 2 inches less than the IX) and the AKG is not as good as the bmw bowers wilkiins. So I got the IX.
I looked at Lyriq as well. The problem for me was the first year only came in rear wheel drive and you could have any color you wanted as long as it was silver or black. Another deciding factor for me was no test drives allowed. No way I am shelling out 90K plus for a car I never drove before. BMW did themselves a huge favor by having the test drive vehicles out for folks to get a feel for the car. Once I drove the IX for the first time, I was hooked.
Here’s what I don’t understand with the Europeans, they used to make the most beautiful automobiles in the world, than lately the ICE engine died out in favor of electric motors and it seams the designers also broke their brains in the process? What the hell is this sad GM looking junk design? Did BMW find this at the Salvation Army clearance house?
70 db in road noise is the same measured in the Kia EV6. I know road noise measurements can vary depending on a lot of factors, but for these two cars to be even in the same ballpark is mind boggling to me.
Great review and a great car. Only drawback is that the waiting period to get the car is ridiculously long. I ordered in October 2021 and I haven’t even got the production number yet. in the meantime, model year has changed so I ordered a 2022 model but it will be built as a 2023 model if it happens. 😗
Yes Alex, The iX does look like a tall station wagon. Towards that end, when will Ford release an electric Country Squire? 🤔 I think you can stop taking nominations now for the EV Buyers Guide Rear Seat of the Year Trophy®, nothing will beat this iX 😁😁
@@allaboutcars4835 Went on a short trip yesterday, it's definitely a thirsty SUV. 2.2miles per Kilowatt-hour - 209miles on one charge. It's advertising says 226 Miles of range and I think that's accurate, I had about 1,400lbs of payload. So 209 miles was good.
@@sethmisaelhernandez5902 that’s pathetic! that low range is an instant fail for Audi. They should’ve never put that thing out. A lot of people are getting around 180 miles.
@@allaboutcars4835 it's their first EV... don't be dramatic, much better quality than any other EV (other than rivian) in the market. I'd pick this one again for an SUV. Their 2023 model should be much better range.
@@kkgolf5371 That's good. I think it depends on the dealer. I am worried about the change in the law dealing with electric cars. If I don't get the order in this year, the car won't qualify for the $7500 credit.
@@sporla3 no you are good. If you have a vin and a binding order. If you don't get by November. Call dealer and have them get a purchase and sale agreement if you already did not sign one. All set if you have that and you receive car in 2023. You will still get credit
@@kkgolf5371 No VIN. I did give $1,000 down payment. I have a vehicle design. There isn't even an order number on it. That is the part that worries me. The salesman indicated that I will finalize everything when I get closer to delivery. But I have no idea when that is.
I'm thinking the insurance on this is going to be crazy. These carbon fiber vehicles are a high risk for insurance companies. If it's in an accident and the carbon fiber is breeched/shattered, I know of no way to repair it. This means the vehicle could be totaled by the insurance company.
funny my insurance is actually lower than my previous suv volvo xc-90, get a quote to avoid surprises.. I think we see some surprisingly low insurance rates because companies are interested in getting market share of this new segment and plan to use this market share for marketing purpose.. once they start getting historical data premiums will most likely go up..
@@andreh.dupuis8475 Yes, I was surprised about that myself. I got insurance quotes for Tesla Model Y and Model X, as well as Audi Etron. All were significantly higher than the BMW IX
Currently own an E-tron Prestige, and with the 2023 Audi E-tron getting a redesign, i can't wait to see which one I'd go for! - 2023 is the Year of the electric C/SUVs.
7:20 - Unfortunately the iX uses CFRP as a laminate on top of steel & aluminium - it's not as sophisticated as the i3. It's mostly for aesthetics I think.... but still a great car.
@@bahamatodd agreed. If GM keeps it at that price, it will be a big winner. And they will qualify for the new full 7500 point of sale tax credit in 2023 (likely to pass) where the iX won’t qualify for a dime
@@doomsday9973 And what is the Model X ? This is better than a Model Y and a little more money yes but more features and more performance and much newer styling. The price is right especially this year with the 7500 fed tax break..
As always Alex, an excellent job. So much information presented interestingly. As to its front looks, my wife and I immediately liked its concept car looks. Great range considering it s considerable weight, the performance that it produces, and more. As to its interior, our living room is not its grade. TU.
I’ve coasted through dozens of reviews of IX as I await receive mine and by far the best overall intro to the car, it’s fact based and shows a lot more detail knowledge and reasoning behind data driven decisions. My only quirk slow down the vocals.
Luxury Electric Suvs are dropping about $12,500 per year. I got myself a 2019 Audi E-tron Prestige for $62,000 (because of the overpriced market) ... new it was $87,000 + Tax.
@@sethmisaelhernandez5902 Wrong.. you got that because the range on the Audi is horrible and now that the Model Y is out and others the prices are coming down. You won't find this car used for under 70k within 2-3 years I bet
@@kkgolf5371 E-tron 2019-2022 all have the same Range, 220 Miles. Range/Charging curve are 2 important factors when choosing and EV, also comfort. Having been in both i can say Model Y is uncomfortable, non luxurious. There's a reason why Kyle from out of spec chose the Etron for his wife and for road trips. You'd stop to have a snack at 220 miles anyway and recharge in minutes with Electrify America.
@@sethmisaelhernandez5902 I know those things. I drove an Audi E-tron and nice interior and ride but not quick enough and range is pathetic for a 79k vehicle. My best friend has a model Y and yes the ride and noise are bad
I enjoyed this review as I’ve enjoyed other reviews you’ve done. Your opinions a clear, backed by data and you keep it compact with no unnecessary fluff. Thank you.
No Alex it’s a electrified interpretation of a beaver on wheels. Knowing BMW’s reputation of being a money pit. It’s a hard pass unless your a badge snob then go right ahead being laughed at.
I am the owner of one iX 50 and I would call it just breaking. The car keeps breaking and braking and breaking. the last one? couple of days ago the car started itself and crashed in font of the car in front. The sad part is that neither BMW nor the dealership have done anything to resolve the problem. I would say that if the car maker is interested in building a good service or reputation (but at this point I would just call it service) would offer to take the car back or give me a new one. NOTHING OF THAT KIND AS HAPPENED
same price as a similarly equipped x5 v8 xdrive 50 and you save $$$ on gas and enjoy catapult like acceleration and the best sound system you will probably hear. No brainer for me. Then again everything is relative depends on you base of comparison and personal values/interests.
No, the Q4 e-tron is the Audi version of an ID.4. Audi was stupid in just calling this vehicle "e-tron", as there have been, and will continue to be, other more specific e-tron models.
The lightning gets 60mpge highway, the iX is impressively efficient for it's large size. This gets efficiency numbers close to the Porsche Taycan 4S (!!) Which is insane because this is an SUV (!!!!)
If I need an EV that is slower than a Ford Mach-E Performance, Genesis GV60 or Tesla Model Y Performance, is uglier than them, and costs much more, now I know where to go.
I’m still waiting for “normal” electric cars that aren’t completely loaded with ungodly amounts of unnecessary electronic crap. Premium to me is when I open my door it’s just plain old mechanical door latch. Lasted me over 20 years in my 96 rav4 with no problems. 0$ to fix because it never broke.
wonder if that combination will be available one day.. I’m not holding my breath because all the new ev models are aligning themselves to compete with Teslas
I wonder why you consider this revolutionary, when all I can see is an evolution of the i3 platform. And why have spare tires become obsolete? I can't think of a single EV that even pretends to have someplace to store one. Have people stopped driving any distance, or does everyone use services instead of changing their tire? If they aren't going to include storage under the front hood, why not slap a spare space-saving tire there?
It's not just EVs, but most cars. Spares are heavy and bulky, and in Europe and Asia drivers are rarely more than a short distance from a town, assuming the fix-a-flat and compressor don't do the job. It would be nice if they kept US distances in mind, but we're a minority of their sales (and even here few people take the spare into account when buying. Some cars have room for a compact spare, but just don't include one.
you think a spare tire is a safe replacement for cars today which are very heavy? not only that if you get tire damage the suspension and everything near that spare tire will be heavily damaged.
You’re kidding about having to pull two tabs/loops on opposite sides of the cabin to open the hood, right? How inconvenient, and something I would expect from a company that is making its first vehicle rather than a company that prides itself as the building “The Ultimate Driving Machine.”
It is ugly, but the interior is nice. Nicer than a Model X which is similar price point so, not sure why all the hate on the price tag. I have driven one and it is really good, quick and smooth. I wouldn’t buy one, but I wouldn’t buy a Model X either. I think that is the closest competitor, maybe not, I haven’t been following the segment too closely.
Framing "charging times" as "% full in x minutes" is not really helpful for comparisons. Instead, how about "miles per minute" or "at 10% battery level, this car will add x miles in 30 minutes.
I agree, that would be far more useful. Temperature/battery conditioning can also affect that, but just some specific, standard number for charging time would be a big help. I'm very disappointed that other carmakers are following Hyundai/Kia's lead and pushing up charging rates. Sure, most charging is at home, but some of us do take road trips, and DC Fast Charge times do matter. I won't buy an EV that charges as slowly as this. I don't need a huge back seat, so the Genesis GV60 is looking very attractive. I'm also waiting to see what the charging is like on the GV70 EV, as I really like the styling and size of the ICE version.
I actually find that to be far less useful, especially since the “miles added” vs the amount of charge added varies *substantially* depending on driving habits, weather, vehicle load, etc. You might add 20 miles/min when charging in ideal weather conditions, but only 15 miles/min when in cold/wet conditions, or maybe only 10 miles/min when towing, all without changing the charging speed or amount of energy added. So, saying how much amount of energy or percentage of the battery charge is added is far more useful because it doesn’t depend on driving conditions/ the efficiency of the vehicle at that moment.
Personally the styling in the front and decrease storage capabilities without a frunk make this a hard sell compared to a model y for me. I'm looking for reasons to bounce from Tesla but it's hard. Alex, one thing that may be helpful to add to reviews somehow is to comment on the driver assistance features performance. The Tesla autopilot is just so good I cannot see myself getting a vehicle that doesn't have comparable features. I know you mentioned the iX has aggressive lane centering but I'd be curious to know how it actually performs compared to autopilot.
Autopilot on the Vision only Teslas (i.e. all of the new ones) is easily beaten by most of the driver assistance packages available from other manufacturers now. The old radar Autopilot system was excellent (but far from perfect), the vision system is *substantially* worse. I’ve had a lot of experience with both.
Get a Tesla and don’t fall for these gimmicks put out by legacy auto. These other evs being pushed out don’t compare.. they’re simply made to look as if they do but they’re nowhere close.
Your intro described this car as the second coming of Christ but nothing in your video justified it. This is just another ugly electric car, notice I didn't say crossover, with a bmw badge
Honestly don't like it. I hate what all these companies are doing with their evs. Hyundai and Kia are the only ones that have it right, just make them normal cars with electric power trains. Ford came close with the lightning but they HAD to slap the stupid screen in. Honestly if I bought a lightning I'd swap out the screens for the lower end models
The fast charging times are a bit embarrassing considering the price of the vehicle. It helps that it has decent range, but I could charge my Ioniq5 almost 3 times from 10-80% in the time that it would take that iX to charge from 10-80% (using the 45 minute estimate you said). You’re right, fast charging time is not as important to most people as it is made out to be, but a $100k family car is going to be used on road trips, and a 45 minute charging stop is definitely on the long side. That said, if it does really have 315 miles of range, that 80% charge would probably get you about 240 miles of range (driving from 80-10%), so that’s not too horrible. I just wish BMW would have done a little better on a “no compromise” EV. All of the 800V architecture cars charge faster than this.
Lets shatter this 800V fallacy right away. Despite only 200kw charging the EQS can still charge to 80% a lot faster than this BMW despite having a slightly larger battery, in fact it can charge to 80% in about the same time as the ionic 5 (800V) despite having a 20% larger battery pack. PEAK charging rate is bunk unless you only want to charge for 15 minutes. Much more important particularly for road tripping is the average charging rate to 80 for which 800 or 400 V is meaningless is a meaningless statistic. With current batteries, charging at very high rates means inevitable heat throttling right around 40 to 50% SOC thus hurting your average to 80. In the EQS you can charge at 100kw all the way to 80, 800volt packs are lucky if they are doing 50kW at that SOC. In summary, its much better to jog quickly than to sprint and come in second because you cant keep up the pace.
A really useful comparo would be this BMW vs an Ioniq 5 Limited. The Ioniq is smaller, slower and lacks an adjustable suspension. But then it is fast enough, big enough, includes excellent L2 ACC and costs $35,000 less with a transferable 5 year warranty. Oh, and it charges waaaaay faster.
It's extremely good for an SUV of this size, especially at high speeds. It almost matches the AWD Taycan and Model S Plaid in efficiency at highway speeds, that's why it's so surprising.
It would be a small third row in a vehicle of this size, and when companies have tried such small third rows they haven't sold. The Model X is both larger and far more expensive.
Wow!! What happened to "German engineering" nowadays? I used to be so impressed everytime i open the hood and just enjoying how neat they look. Now it looks like a Toyota tercel . And to open the hood? Jesus Christ! 🤦🤦
