I love Donny's music and have all his albums plus all the ones where he's a sideman. He is the ultimate sideman, uplifting any date, including David Bowie's. Heard him once in Santa Cruz, his hometown, for a wonderful show.
Really fun to listen to Donny speak on his early years. I used to play guitar with the Paul Contos Group. Paul is one of the great sax players in Northern California and was a fantastic teacher for Donny. Donny has become a great, great player. Chris Potter and Donny are the two players that I can't get enough of these days. I'm now in Wyoming, near Jackson Hole and still playing all day. I could never live in New York City however, and prefer the country life even if I'm playing alone. But...David Bowie has never impressed as being much of a talent.
