Why can't I leave a comment? That wasn't the swimming pool at Grand Wailea! That was the fish pond surrounding that restaurant. It looks closed. And to your cartoon friend, the Mexicans are the only ones who wanna do the work. FYI, but on the real, I'm greatful for this, yo. Thank you. I have more tho,
Another thing all your viwers should know is not all the homeless are drug addicts or bad! Alot have been ran out with high prices ,loosing their homes because of greed. The housing situation is affecting every island 🏝 Alot of the homeless came from the mainland
@@MarkFranklin-ws5jf do you have water rights in the US? As in you cannot restrict people's access to the couple of meters that's from any waterway from the public.
@MarkFranklin-ws5jf Yes and pushing the local Hawaiians back in the jungle into shacks that were built during the sugar wars. Those shacks are falling apart and the lands being bought and kicking everyone out on the street
The cost of housing is astronomical that's a large part of why too. Go to places where housing is high and you'll find alot of homeless people camping out. I know my City has a major homeless problem partially because of that reason.
I wonder why people often say this. Indeed, it is very sad to see what happened to Lahaina especially the people lost. But Lahaina was full of short-term rentals with 87% of occupants being renters. And Front Street full of jewelry shops, art galleries, and overpriced restaurants. I think Lahaina will be rebuilt - but hope it will be rebuilt better.
It is not completely gone, got the Kanaka Maoli, with da Koko, and Geneaology. Gang come back and get a piece of your land back!!! ALL ILLEGAL contracts, leases,
I lived on Maui in the 1970s and traveling around the West End of Maui was a nightmare it was all dirt and rock road and half the time the bridges were washed out and you had to turn back!
This Hawaii series has been fun to watch Nick. You captured a lot in the short time you were there. I was on Oahu last year for 10 days. I didn't venture to any of the other islands. Looking forward to the Alaska series...and when you hit 1M subs. 😎✌️
Nick! I drove that road you were on and was NEVER so scared in my entire life! At one point I pulled over and just prayed and begged God to keep me safe. A young man up by that curve where there was a stand of some sort helped by assuring me I didn't have too far to go until I was safe. Once I saw the valley w/homes, etc. I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Been on the Road to Hana but I think THAT one where you were was WAY WORSE!!! So glad you made it 'safe and sound'!!! I'll be on Maui (Up Country) to visit dear friends the weekend after next, then over to Lanai to visit more friends for a few days...can't wait! (LAHAINA STRONG...NEVER FORGET)!!!
Those of us who have been in the army or navy, already know that the Hawaii government is completely incompetent. Both the army and navy have dedicated units that can set up shelters, showering, and food facilities within hours or days anywhere in the world. The fact the Maui government can’t do something in this amount of time is a disgrace.
That's crazy!! I know from experience how fast a Fire camp can be set up. And that little village Nick showed us that was still unoccupied, is beyond RIDICULOUS !!
That's part of the frustration experienced by residents throughout the state. The abuse, neglect and corruption of the state is rampant. The displaced residents should have been provided housing...not just temporary placement in hotels, etc. which was in itself limited which forced many off the island. There have been homeless people throughout the state but they are more visible now on Maui partially because of the people displaced from the fires. And there are money people who want to buy up these properties in Lahaina!
well.. they did hire the police guy that covered up the Vegas shootings right before the fire.. and paid him WAY more than average..way more.. and then another cover ensues.. jeesh
We took that road 20 years ago and it's truly scarier than hell. Cliffs with hundreds of feet straight down, barely room for a car, no guard rails, lots of roadside crosses.
So many fond memories of Maui going snorkeling at Molokini, horseback riding at Thompson Ranch, driving along the coast and seeing Humback Whales breeching or spouting water, hanging out on the beach and body surfing, visiting Paia and having a picnic and watching the wind surfer's, going to dinner at the Grand Wailea, having outdoor braekfasts near the Ocean. Visiting Lahaina to see the Banyan tree, its a shame what happened to Lahaina, especially for the locals. Enjoying the weather, and escaping the cold Winters. Maui will always be paradise to Me.
I'm born and live in Hawaii. Outside of town, it is a third world country. There are areas of the highway (and of course in remote areas a handful of miles off it) where you will have no cell coverage. On my island's power grid, a surge or malfunction in one area can down the entire network for hours. It happens a few times a year. A few weeks ago, there was a brushfire. It wasn't really big, a thousand acres, and it only damaged an unoccupied shed. But it also jumped the highway and burned utility poles and utility lines, which downed the power, telephone, cell service, internet and cable TV for a region of the island including my hospital. There was another fire at the transformer station last week, resulting in another outage of power, internet and cable TV. The economic conditions are inescapable for the common people. Let's say you study for success in a STEM career. Or finance. Or medicine. Or law. And where will you work? Not in Hawaii.
@@trippmoore OK, wait...do you mean the you like it trashy? I like it rural and non-high-rise-y, but seriously, all that trash the people leave around their abodes??
We visited Maui in 2019. I waited my whole life to see that island and I was not disappointed with my experience. As I was swimming in the ocean near Kihei, I felt a large fish hit me. I couldn’t identify it. Not long after this, a man was bitten by a shark and soon passed away. Be careful in the water!
Christopher Columbus did not visit Hawaii. Columbus made four voyages to the Americas between 1492 and 1504, exploring parts of the Caribbean, Central America, and the northern coast of South America. He never traveled to the Pacific Ocean or reached Hawaii.
Nick is about to get 1,000,000 subs!!!! What a white knuckle situation of anticipation. I'm glad to say I knew this channel when it had ONLY, something like, 320,000. Crazy.
Too many people from CA think that Maui is supposed to be like Costa Mesa with seamless infrastructure and services. It is not. It is a magnificent self contained island heaven on earth, with good, bad, beautiful and ugly and everything in-between. But more than anything, Maui and its awesome people need your help now. They also need a little compassion; don't show up in Lahaina and expect them to explain everything to you like the last 10,000 RU-vidrs that showed up last week did. The government has done little to help the people, certainly less than ANY other disaster in the US, and the proud Hawaiians won't ask for the help they need so please show them your support.
There are so many corporate resorts, little to no hawaiians want to deal with tourist, filled with crime outside resorts, overcrowded with disrespectful tourist, expensive all the way around, and many sewage pools all around. I feel bad for local people.
Agree , was there in 1997 , sat under those trees in the little town square / park walked down the little main street stopped in various bars and restaurants , it was tropical heaven , so sad to see it now 😢
70s Hawaii reminds me of the murder of a couple on Palmyra Atoll* Islands south of Hawaii...In the 70s or 80s a down on his luck shyster criminal & girlfriend. Got the bright idea to stay on the Atoll islands & grow pot. Then sail ⛵ back to Hawaii & sell it. Something like that, but the weed wouldn't grow in the sand duh...So they began mooching off people who visited the island. When a couple in a nice sailboat ⛵ showed up. They disappeared & he was found with their boat back in Hawaii. Something like that, can't remember the exact details. But the guy was a real POS who thinks everyone owes him something.
Right you don’t judge people! If you get off your high horse and just help--don’t ask questions. I heard that before n can’t remember who said that! Aunty Theola was the Joan of Arc Westside. She lived poor, but that was her n no one really knew who she was. I grumbled a lot, but all she needed was a hug.
You know pigeons are actually feral domesticated birds, and they don't really know how to forage, so this is why they hang around people, they used to be used for communication, ie: homing pigeons, and now they don't really know how to be without people.
You went to many of the places that I did, including the infamous 340. I stayed in Kaanapali and saw Lahaina before the firs, it was a really neat and funky place and it make me sad that it was destroyed, but there were certain man-made factors that doomed it. My prediction for HI is that things will only get worse there for a variety of obvious reasons.
I visited Maui a few years ago and remember Lahaina before the fire, so sad it was destroyed. I had a rental car and I remember my rental contract specifically prohibited driving on the one lane highway you were on, I can see why!
I still cannot believe the amount of fruits and vegetable they import. You mentioned that in another video and I do not understand why the government has not set aside enough land to make them a bit more self sustaining in the areas they can. You have some rich folks that own the coffee plantations making a killing there while the everyone is stuck paying incredible prices for imported food stuff that could be grown and raised locally!
On my island (Kauai) prior to Covid, it was 97% imported food. The reason is money. Local farmers cannot compete on price with big mainland farms, or with low cost producers from developing countries. We get fish from Vietnam, and avocados from Mexico. Local farmers have to compete on other aspects like freshness, quality, or supporting local business. (Even Costco is having a problem in recent years keeping their produce from rotting on the retail floor.) But local businesses still can't pay common field laborers to be able to afford to rent or buy the average $1.4 million homes on Kauai. Some do shady things like bringing in illegal laborers from developing countries, taking their passports on arrival, and keeping them in shacks in the fields. Or keeping them at sea on fishing boats.
I was there in May as well and yes there were some overcast days and the water as a little rough. Its not cheap by any means and yes homeless is a problem but those sunsets in Ka'anapali are majestic. The road to Hana was a beautiful drive.
Thanks for taking me back to where I got my heart 💔 broken! There's an abandoned golf course you can hike in Kapalua and a great bed and breakfast in Kiehei. There's a beautiful treehouse in Hana you can rent! You do get the stink eye in places but for the most part I enjoyed my time there! Great video!
I work at the Old Maui High on Holomua road. I drive past the homeless and all the abandoned vehicles every day. It's pretty wild to see and all kinds of crazy stuff goes down.
I used to live there in the 90’s. Beautiful place, nice people, plenty to do but towards the end of my stay which was the early 2000’s , you could start to see the beginning of the end. Things were getting unaffordable, more and more traffic, friends were having to work more to keep up, more people sleeping in cars, people weren’t using the Chaka 🤙🏽as much. We ruined it.
Well done to our government. Yes, this goes for both sides if you look up our countries history. Whether overthrowing their anarchy before becoming a United States Territory and now a state with ending results like this. I can see why if you're a tourist like myself when visiting this state. It's not very welcoming for how they got treated by our system.
Tips for travellers: If you're homeless, Maui is not so bad, compared to somewhere like New York. All you need is a tent. I slept in a hammock, and on the beach in a sleep sack (if you dont know what that is, you havent lived). I also slept overnight in airports. back in the day.
47:06 those JDM vans are common on islands in the pacific as they originate from Japan, while I was in the Navy I saw many of them, all right hand drive, bought cheap by sailors stationed in Japan and imported to the US
The drum circle playing "One Way Out," by the Alman Brothers. Too funny! Great beach hat either way the turtles on the under side! Wow…that crazy road reduced down to one lane up on those jungly cliffs…scary!
Those people in Lahaina have a lot to be angry about, justifiably. It's unreal the temp housing is not finished yet. Who wouldn't be angry? But the other beautiful scenes are amazing and no crowds! 🎉
I paused this video to see the price for the Porterhouse Steak. WOW. I believe that after seeing that price , the reasonable price items must be very small.
Wow the amount of content you were able to get for this Hawaiian road trip is insane, this must’ve been the most expensive road trip series of all time. It’s a shame these beautiful post card-like views come with a high price
Good to see you got Sunshine in Maui! I went to Hawaii at one point when my parents were still married. And I was bored the most when I was there except when I was swimming in their pools & oceans. I just thought I’d add! Nick! When you were in Hawaii! Including Maui! I hope it was more fun for you than it was for me! And giving you did say one time you are originally from San Bernardino, California! At least you never had to live in Oregon! Which I’ve had to do all my life & praying someday to move out. And Nick! I applaud you for hating the rain. I do too! I have to put with way too much of it living in Oregon & having to live there all my life. People there also are more selfish, careless, clueless & obnoxious than they are in ANY OTHER STATE I ever went to so far. Same too for places in Canada I got to go. I can’t think enough how wonderful & caring you are Nick! Especially the more I see your wonderful videos! And for certain places I’ve recommended to you to do videos for that I feel would be good ones! If you ever do those kind of videos! I’d be even more thrilled for your videos. I have you on Cameo! I’ll be happy to talk to you on there when time is right just for the idea of us crossing paths with each other so I can tell you more about the good & bad I experienced where I went! But until then Nick! Keep up the good work. 👍
Nick says: Damit, before I even got here the clouds where here first, it's gonna rain on me. Well there's bound to be a beach I can relax in with sunshine 😂
I lived on Oahu from July 4th 1990 to December 14th 1992. Visited Kuai before Iniki and saw that huge resort, Royal Palms, from the Elvis movie Blue Hawaii before it was destroyed. only way I would ever go back is if I used my VA retirement to used MWR beach properties to stay at Eva Beach, Bellows, Hale Koa. Otherwise I would probably buy a cheap van, minivan, pickup or largeSUV and create an "overlander" type setup to be a glorified homeless person camping on various areas of the island and shopping on military installations.
Wow, They were incompetent before the fire and they STILL are!! Pathetic isn't a strong enough word. That road was crazy yeah? Pretty normal up in Humboldt. Gets more fun when the fog turns into pea soup ( and yea, no guardrails) Good thing you have such a great professional driver. Good job Kim! Really good series about the islands Nik! 🤟🌴🎼
Family and I going to Maui for vacation next month - partly to help their economy. This video is useful for us to plan our trip. We will be staying out of Lahaina area though.
What is the name of the guy playing the acoustic song in the introduction of this video? I know he was a chill hippie guy on the beach jamming in a prior video. I would like to download it if he has it online.
The grey / gray skies is because there’s a lot of Volcanic Ash in the air called “Vog” … the big island of ‘Hawaii’ has had an active volcano for years.
I love Maui, I actually live on the big island Kona side, and I love it here and I wouldn’t wanna live anywhere else. Since Covid and the Lahaina fires things have changed. But I wouldn’t wanna live anywhere else, but Hawaii.
I used to live in Kihei. I was a middle school math teacher at Lokelani Intermediate School. Made some great friends and have lots of amazing memories. I definitely miss it a lot but it looks like sadly much has changed since I left. Fun fact: when we first moved there, my husband at the time was driving an airport shuttle while he looked for a job as a teacher. He dropped off the last people one day at The Grand Wailea. After everyone had exited the van, he happened to notice a man’s wallet. It had the equivalent of $10k in Japanese Yen in cash - no joke. My husband found the owner and got a thank you. 😅 The man who lost it hadn’t even realized it was missing yet!
Getting worse everyday . I’m blessed to not be homeless and have a job even if I don’t care for it . Got worse since Covid and then our Lahaina fire but it’s BEEN bad since I was young growing up in Wailuku . Could be better could be worse . Be thankful for what you have cuz others know times is hard
It would nice if the billionaires who are buying up islands and prime real estate in Hawaii could donate some of their billions to help rebuild on Maui. But that would mean giving a damn about people as opposed to ripping them off.
Yes it is expensive to live & as a tourist . Mostly people that are living outside on tarps are victims of fire & also victims of expensive cost of living . I wish their politicians will do a better job in helping the housing problems.
I ws on that highway on the North Road. It was an amazing ride while my wife was holding the dashboard and white knuckling. Thank you for your video I been to Maui several times. Great to see some roadside vendors still there.
I didn't see anything like what you're showing, Nick. I called Lahaina my home for four years. Of course, that was in 2008. When I was there people were not allowed to live in their vehicles. My daughter and I took a job delivering Telephone Books so we could see all of Maui without feeling like we were intruding on anyone's personal property. We went down many back roads, it was wonderful. No homeless camps.
I think you are very mistaken about the Christopher Columbus visit. Cook was the first Haouli to “discover,” Hawaii in 1776 or so. Gavin Dawes wrote a great historical perspective about Hawaii. I strongly recommend , “Shoals in Time,” for every, first time visitor. A little education goes a long way for understanding, Hawaii. Great video, I enjoyed seeing Maui after being off island for two years. Mahalo!
My brother and his beautiful Hawaiian/Filipina now ex-girlfriend got me interested in Hawaii. When I went to Hawaii years ago I fell in love with the place and people though they have the worst drivers in the country. Great place Maui.
That's just it, Nick, I have acted, but I want to redo my podcast, which is a joke, but I can't find tech pros to professionalize my program. I pay $50.00 per hour. I don't know about where you live but here in Chicago it's hard to find good (or bad) help.
Hard to believe there wasn't many if any access to working fire hydrants that tragic day. WHY? HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHY? I'm from here Oahu and still haven't gotten any acceptable answers.
😊 at .33, i finally, after 33 years, found my answer to what happened to my old brown truck! Mahalo Nick! It was stolen by my local mechanic in Haiku, and the cops told me they never found it (where could it go on an island?), so hopefully I am not still the registered owner and still liIable! It's housing now! Back then, living on Maui was paradise! Very low crime, and the only person we ever noticed living in the bushes on the beach was a beloved haole everyone called "the newage vegetarian! " 😊 Zero fires, no drought, everywhere green and lush, I never would have dreamed magical Maui would change! And that my Coverfoto Maui photography business on Front Street by Kimo's would somehow sadly end up ashes 😢 what a tragedy! Truly heartbreaking 😢
I live in Downtown Dallas and most days and nights. There's gunshots that I hear. I've seen several. I've been dodging crossfire since 1989. I was born here and raised here. We live in an upper-class area. I see mansions next to the ghetto. Nothing new to me. I know a lot about Dallas history.
DFW really changed for the worst after 2012-2014. When I moved there in 2010 you could still get a nice apartment for like $700-800mo. Lived off Greenville and Lovers, Richardson, Lake Highlands and Forney. I moved to deep rural Tennessee in 2019 and I'm glad.
