The Forgotten World highway, SH43 is 161km journey between Stratford and Taumaranui. Traversing 5 mountain saddles, and along New Zealand's only section of unsealed State Highway, the Tangarakau Gorge, it's what lies beyond the highway that is most forgotten.
Come along on a multi-part series exploring the forgotten world, beyond the highway.
In this episode, I travel from West from Stratford to Whangamomona, a quirky little settlement and heartbeat of the forgotten world that famously declared itself a republic in 1989.
Then, it's the first adventure beyond the highway, as I take a rail cart 80km/s along the disused Stratford - Okakurua line and into the hinterland.
