Just wonderfully told Wim! That ending, brimming with love and forgiveness, almost grace given from above.

Thank you for your close and revealing analysis. My son chose to play this Prelude at the funeral of my wife (his mother) and we were all, including the young children there, deeply affected. Listening to it now, I think it shows the strong influence of Froberger's thoughtful style. I chose to play his Lament for the death of King Ferdinando IV, which has a similar mood to the Bach, during the ceremony.

It definitely captures the feelings of sadness over the loss of a loved one. I read somewhere that Bach may have composed this prelude after the death of his first wife.

The meaning of this sad piece by Bach, as felt, understood, analyzed, and expressed by Wim Winters, with the intimate sound of the clavichord. Thanks for uploading this beautiful, explained -performance.

Here’s a question I think would make for an interesting video. Does the choice of key in Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier effect the musical characteristics of the pieces, and if so, how? Specifically, since these pieces were not intended for an equally-tempered keyboard, and the tuning of every key is slightly different, would there be a preference for- say- scale runs vs. arpeggios vs. block chords in certain pieces, or certain harmonic areas that are avoided, in response to the choice of key? Avoidance of the “wolf fifth” in the more exotic keys would be an obvious example.

To me it is pretty clear (also from practice) that Bach aimed for Werckmeisters Wohltemperiertes Harmonia (1707 ), where basically Werckmeister said that if you want to play in 24 keys, one has to reduce each 5th 1/12. I don't know why this obvious connection (and there are more) today is almost never made. Expanding in keys and tonalities forced the ET because contrary to modern ideas, the "wrong" intervals were not accepted in music in that time. Much more to say about that! I made some years ago some videos about it, that might interest you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ozwzsn55BAU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fIxVfvvkEpk.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UCKkcXPItRI.html

The LH chords are meant, I think, to imitate a lute or guitar. The singing or dramatic RH elements add up to an almost operatic flavor.

The clavichord acting like a harmonics-resonating pulpit of sorts for Wim’s voice!

Hi and thank You. What do you think about the fa bequadro (right hand) on the upbeat before the third movement of bar 18? We have fa bemolle on left hand in the same bar and the climax is clear... and so... why fa bequadro at the soprano voice?? ...how do you "translate" it?

Does the Funerailles by Liszt quote directly this piece? Around 13:00 sounds very similar.

its almost too much to watch the explanation because i always just played it straight. Hurts to think about it, like a vulnerable point.
