In less than a decade, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's team at AP Films had reinvented television puppetry and special effects production. The next step on their ever-climbing trajectory of success was to take Thunderbirds to cinemas, with a feature length film of their own. How would their behind the scenes techniques adapt to the big screen? Would audiences respond? Would Cliff Richard make for a good puppet? Would this film prove - as predicted by executives - to be bigger than James Bond? In this clip from Filmed in Supermarionation, interviewees - including director David Lane, camera operator Alan Perry and voice actors David Graham, Shane Rimmer, and Matt Zimmerman - explain that things didn't quite go to plan.

About Us:
About Me:
Century 21 Films Ltd is a multi-faceted production company whose work spans drama to documentary, miniature effects to puppet shows. It was founded by a group of filmmakers who first collaborated on Filmed in Supermarionation, the story of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's hit puppet shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet.
Since then, we have worked for a multitude of high-profile clients including ITV, BBC, Mammoth Productions, British Film Institute and the Halifax working on projects such Thunderbirds, Endeavour, Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone.
In addition to our regular filmmaking services, we specialise in ‘Supermarionation’ - the puppetry filming technique used to make shows like Thunderbirds and have collaborated with ITV repeatedly to provide specialised services. Our work has been featured on The One Show, This Morning, Good Morning Britain, BBC News, ITV News and Mastermind.

I am going to let you guys know this! I went to see the film on the big screen! For me as a young lad it was just as magical as it was on a B&W TV! It was really magical for a kid back then to see it in full colour and the puppets bigger than I was! I have not forgotten the shear excitement I got from to this day! I saw to any of the folks involved back then, I say a big warm thank you for making a kids life fantastic! Thank you and R.I.P to those that are not here, sadly like my parents! I am glad you did do it! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌

I was a child in the 60’s, I loved the show as I was a bit young when Supercar and Stingray were out. Still love it today and I will still tell my partner Thunderbirds wasn’t puppets it was real. Well it was to us kids. I can sit and watch it all day any day.

I agree. As an excited kid, "Thunderbirds" WASN'T puppets, it was REAL!

I got to see both TB films in the cinema as a boy. Seeing TB1 and especially TB2 so huge was literally FAB!

In fairness, Lew Grade was a lot braver than any other UK TV/film producer around at the time.

I've always thought that the Zero X assembly was one of the best pieces of technical filming ever, I still can't understand why it got flagged off so badly

This was their finest work, UFO eclipsed it as the mix of models and real actors was great, apart form the dated computers in UFO a lot looks quite modern.

great talent (Shane Rimmer, David Lane and others) credit to the film editors (66, and 68) certainly challenge to upscale from 50min episode to a feature film informative clip.

Good video about picking up the pieces after the show wasn't renewed, along with the general unfortunate lack of attendance in theaters for the new Thunderbirds film, despite the brilliance of these Puppets and rarity of this style of puppetry TV series.

I was very much surprised when I learnt that neither 'Thunderbirds Are Go' or 'Thunderbird Six' were a box office success. Such a pity. 😢

@@iancotterill2286 Yes, it is sad to see all that effort didn't find an audience back then in theaters. Thankfully the legacy continues through 2024 and hopefully beyond.

Apart from the rubbish 90's movie and the cartoon am really surprised they haven't brought it back, with the special effects today it could be really good

Was Thunderbirds 6 re-released at the cinemas in the late 80s / early 90s? I have a strange memory that I swear going to see it.

I always thought that ,Atlantic inferno ,lord Parker’s oliday made after or during thunderbirds are go where season 2 as they used the refreshed sets and puppets ,security hazard I thought was the season one finale made bec Cham Cham was so expensive to make 😊

@@century21films28was it mmm I was told by uncle Desmond that Cham Cham cost a lot to make so security hazard was made using clips from past rescues and it’s is after Cham Cham in dvd box sets ok someone got it wrong heheh 😊😊

@@marksinthehouse1968 The clip show episode "Security Hazard" was indeed produced immediately after "The Cham-Cham" episode. "Security Hazard" was created as a clip show episode with only 17 minutes of new material because both production time and budget had been overrun on the preceding produced and very demanding "Attack of the Alligators" and "The Cham-Cham" episodes. Consequently, for producing the final episode of series 1, "Security Hazard", there was only just enough budget and production time left to produce a simple and quick clip-show episode.

@century21films28 22 дня назад
@@marksinthehouse1968 The episodes aren’t in production order on the DVDs. I’m afraid dear Des got it wrong - there’s lots of evidence that The Cham-Cham was made afterwards. Also, clip shows were just standard for them. Cheap buggers!

The movie was okay, but I always skip past Alan's dream sequence, it's so tacky and cheesy and totally unnecessary to the film. The whole film, without the filler, especially without the dream sequence, would have made a good tv episode. At the time, the Zero X assembly sequence was mind blowing.
@andywilliams7323
@andywilliams7323 22 дня назад
The critics were unkind, but some of their reviews were justified. The Thunderbirds Are Go film honestly isn't as good as Gerry and the producers thought it was, and is inferior to the TV series. The big problem is the story; it's not a well-written story. It spends too much time away from the International Rescue Team and the Thunderbirds Machines and Rescue vehicles. The story also lacks worthwhile substance and character development. Yet despite that, it's overly long and too slow-paced, with significant unnecessary, shallow and boring filler unrelated to and distracting from the main plot. In particular, Alan's dream sequence involving Lady Penelope, Parker, Cliff Richard and the Shadows. That dream sequence is boring, adds nothing worthwhile whatsoever to the film and is awkward and out of pace with the rest of the narrative, such that it takes you out of the film. It was one of those scenarios where the story format of the TV episodes didn't translate well to a lengthy feature film. They only had 2 options, either make the film just an extended TV episode story, or change to a different story format from that of the TV episodes for the film. Gerry and Sylvia chose the latter, and it made for a film about some mostly uninteresting generic space adventure about getting to Mars and back, rather than an actual Thunderbirds/International Rescue story in the style of the TV show. They repeated exactly the same problems (except a pointless dream sequence) in the Thunderbirds 6 film, only even worse.

I totally agree with your comments and also think the dream sequence is terrible and I have been a Century 21 fan since before Thunderbirds I am sixty seven years young.

Someone has cut the film down to the length of a TV episode, and it actually works better.
