The Manwin Hotel in Winnipeg has been a hub for drugs and violence. It was the scene of two homicides in the last year.
But with a lack of housing, it’s also become a last resort for the city’s vulnerable population.

I'm all for helping people in need 100% but I also believe that we need to do our best and be responsible for ourselves. We cannot depend on Governments to feed us and cloth us or to put a roof over our heads. Education and jobs are essential to a secure life. I understand that as indigenous people, finding work is tough so we need to work harder than other people and do better in proving ourselves. Instead of giving up, try harder. It's like this for most people regardless of race, there will be competition for every job. Giving up and feeling sorry for ourselves isn't doing anyone any good. Drug and alcohol treatment centers are everywhere but you must want to get sober. Getting sober and staying sober is another battle on it's own. But man is it worth it. Indigenous people have been programmed to depend on the government via welfare system. Although assistance does help when people fall on hard times it shouldn't be a permanent solution. I strongly believe the welfare system was first created to control the indigenous population by the government, I feel that it is no longer used this way. We should want to be independent and be in control of our own lives. Our health and happiness is in our own hands. The government is not responsible for us so why wait for them to do something that we are fully capable of doing. taking care of ourselves. Besides, have they ever done anything good for the indigenous community? Can the indigenous community trust the government? Nope! We can't expect the enemy to take care of us. That is just insane to think this would work in our favor. They tried killing off native people but we are still here. We are better than this and we are capable of getting up every morning and going to work so we have nutritious food and a home to call our own. We are capable of seeking help when we need it. I understand that there are people suffering from severe mental health issues and will need all the government assistance they can get for their entire life and they should receive all the help. We need to stop having that victim mentality and realize that we are survivors... Not victims. we suffered a lot at the hands of other people so why are we carrying that pain and hurting ourselves? Think it's time to give ourselves and our families the life that we deserve. Our lives, our responsibility. My humble opinion.

...since you clearly don't know this, I'll give you the heads up; people lost in drug addiction, aren't equipped to take personal responsibility choices! It's an oxymoron! Its why the government doesn't allow (ideally!) drug addicts, to care for children! The government does nothing however, to provide necessary resources, for these people to access! Middle class folks, who have no idea of the width, & breath, these situations, or who look the other way, don't often see fit, to have their tax $$$ spent in an amount that would be needed, to properly provide recovery, for most of those affected, by what is basically, governments failure to deny entry of the very drugs causing this situation in the first place! 🤷🏽‍♂️

Canada is NOT one of the richest countries in the world. So far, it has maintained that illusion by borrowing ever more money. The only reason most of Canada does not resemble some hell-hole in Sub-Saharan Africa is because 27.5 million Canadians work hard, pay taxes and strive to give their children a better start in life than they had.

nobody is forced to live in these conditions, they created the condition at least to some degree, they choose to live in a pile of garbage, graffitti ,drugs, alcohol etc, to have a better life one must personally take some responsibility to create one, try cleaning up after yourselves for once, grab a sponge, get some paint, actually work to strive for better,,,,,but government or taxpayers it would seem are responsible to babysit these losers and care for them every day, under my watch the building would be demolished and you would be on the street cause you show zero effort to succeed in life the first place.

What we need tipi's, elders to teach traditional way of living.... homeless do share a sense of community, its the tradition they share that needs cleansing.... For spiritual purposes, the tipi's entrance faces the East and the back faces the West. This is to symbolize the rising and setting of the sun and the cardinal directions. The tipi's poles stretch high into the sky as a connection with the Creator and are firmly planted on the ground as a connection to the Earth.... the manwin front enterance chews u up and the back door sh¡ts u out 😮

The Aboriginal homeless population accounts for 29 percent of the overall homeless population in Canada. Of the total 70,200 urban Canadians who identified as being homeless, 20,358 were found to be of Aboriginal descent. Kate Sjoberg says: "It is time for all levels of government to invest in public housing". Question: Does Kate Sjoberg include the AFN as one of those "levels of government"? Ottawa's spending on Indigenous priorities has increased significantly since 2015 (181 per cent) funding for 2023-24 is estimated to be over $30.5 billion - forecasted to rise to $32 billion in 2024-25. This works out to over $17,000 per year for every indigenous man, woman and child. What percentage of this money is the AFN using effectively to build social housing on reserves?

Having three empty beds while in the next second of film we see people on the streets, living under tarps, and being told the problem is unmanageable.... is wild to me. It must be that, a. there's policy and funding issues that interfere with people getting a bed. Or, b. the issue of houselessness isn't as bad as this video is making it out to be. We all see first hand that clearly houselessness is an issue and there is a need for these services. Personally, I think there should be zero acceptance of referrals from collaterals. Because if Main Street Project were to place the people they are in contact each day. The beds would never be empty. So why are they? The government shouldn't fund existing projects that need capital and ongoing operating costs under the caveat that these existing projects must 'dance for dollars' and loop in stake holders. What this does is funnel money from x into a as a way to say the issue is being resolved and that more money is going to the issue. It isn't. The money granted is clearly under the requirement that it solves the issue social workers in hospitals and other sister agencies are finding without solution. It doesn't affect the bottom line and in fact. Fewer people who the money was intended for, receive the funding yet again. Funding agreements without requiring 'the biggest impact' of partnerships created in the city would actually allow the biggest impact to happen. Main Street Projects should be able to grow up, not out. Then maybe within that further growth, we would actually see some progress.

One of the biggest problems in Winnipeg is meth addiction, so many people who live in places like the Manwin have serious addictions that consume their lives, to the point that they no longer care about the conditions they live in, meaning they are unlikely to complain or report conditions to authorities. The city knows the owner of the Manwin has previously failed to comply with repair orders, so why do they have to wait until more complaints come in? This is why there are so many places like the Manwin, the New West, the Yale, etc. The owners know residents are unlikely to complain so they take advantage of that and do nothing about the situation because there are virtually no consequences. It's pretty sickening.

Another argument for UBI. Trickle-down doesn't work, because the people at the top keep most of those funds for themselves. The government needs to acknowledge this as the ROOT problem. 52 yrs saskatchewan perspective, I've seen how the natives aren't really affected by all the countries' efforts to make things better. Nothing works. By the looks of it, theres been no change. And It's just plain ignorant to think that their historical hardships IN CANADA are so much more devastating, long-lasting, and in some way "special" compared to all the peoples ethnic or political hardships throughout history. In this country, anyone born after the sixties is guilt free as far as the indigenous situation. Systematic racism towards natives in canada is a thing of the past now. We're race realists now, realizing that there may never be reconciliation like this.
