This was extremely helpful dude. Thanx for posting. Ive bern having a lousy time with backlash on my bfs, but after 2 weeks of practice I've gotten much better.
No worries at all glad it helped! It does take a little while to get used to then a lot of perfecting but I’d say it’s 100% worth sticking with, thanks for watching + commenting! Tight lines.
No worries glad it has been of some use to you! I’d stick with it for a while as I believe it’s worth it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it 👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks v much appreciate the kind words. I suppose it’s horses for courses with regards to the method used, just as long as you don’t spend more time picking away at your spool than you do actually fishing haha. Thanks for watching 👍🏻👊🏻
Came across this video by accident and I'm glad i did. I've tried my bfs set up once and gave up as i struggled with the cast. Your info might just help me enough to get out and try again🎣
Cheers stu, I’d say it’s deff worth picking it up and giving it another go. For me once you get the hang of it I find it a lot more enjoyable! Glad it helped! Thanks for watching 👍🏻👊🏻
👍🏻👍🏻 great matey wish I’d have seen this 6 months ago when I first started using them after fifty years of spinning reels 😢. But as u said it’s well worth sticking to and I’m happy that I did. 👍🏻
Cheers gez! Unfortunately I had to learn the same way as you did with lots of headaches and backlashes. Glad it all came together as I love the ease and accuracy of the cast I can achieve now! Cheers for watching! Tight lines 👍🏻
Good info dude.... I fished with Abu multipliers for pike 40 odd years ago, along with using them off the beach. I am, however, dabbling in this BFS style for Perch and I've had a little success with a few fish....The thing for me is enough spool tension to drop the lure and definitely use the brakes and thumb control..... A got a Shimano Curado reel the other day and after 10 minutes, with a couple of easy backlashes sorted, I'd set the brakes perfectly, and was easily getting distance with 3g jigs and 12lb braid...... I'm a sucker for the rod rings up anyway....I've got a couple of heavier baitcasting setups for Pike and this BFS will compliment it throughout the autumn and winter......
Cheers pal glad you found it useful 👍🏻 think it’s deff worth sticking with just for the enjoyment factor alone. Starting to get to the time where the preds will be aggressively on the feed so the catches will improve I’m sure! If you need any advice let me know. Thanks for watching! Tight lines 👍🏻👊🏻
Yeah man, I'll be using it again or a short morning sesh before work tomorrow, and after some very biblical downpours this evening, I hope it freshens up my local waters.....Tight lines fella !!!@@insearchofperch8170
Thank you pal, I’ve found that’s the best way for me as I feel you have more accurate adjustment 👍🏻 thought I’d show both ways though as some may prefer the other. Thanks for watching, tight lines 👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you for that Will. It makes a pleasant change to see someone using a bait caster here in the UK. Your canal looks pretty much like some of the rivers I intend using my BFS setup when the close season ends here in Norfolk.
Thanks for the feedback David! I’ve found them a pleasure to use after the initial teething period. Can’t wait for the rivers to reopen, how’s the fishing going down your way? Fished on the bure a few years back near a couple of carp pits and a small marina. Free stretch, can’t remember the location for the life of me. Lots of windmills haha
Cheers mate, didn’t know how it was going to come across. I’m certainly not a pro but had enough experience to give a little advice! Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate it 👍🏻👊🏻👍🏻
Thanks Graham! Just thought I’d share a few tips that helped me when I first started with the bfs gear, it can be a pretty steep learning curve. Tight lines 👍🏻👊🏻
Always impressive to see light lures thrown on a baitcaster. I tried a much heavier setup a few years ago, couldn't cast as far as a fixed spool and then my thumb slipped on the cast - monster birds nest, swapped back over to the fixed spool! Tempted to have another try using a very light setup but not sure what the benefit would be apart from learning a new skill.
It does happen from time to time but I’d 100% give it another go. I find baitcasting reels much more enjoyable to use, no faffing around with bail arms etc. I’m also able to cast more accurately with bfs set up. I think they both have their ups and downs but they seem to “fit” well for me 👍🏻👊🏻
@@insearchofperch8170 - I’m tempted! Main problem for me is that a lot of the spots I fish are properly overgrown so small underarm flicks are needed. No room for a proper cast so would be unable to load up the rod properly. The biggest problem fishing rivers/brooks is the close season - seems to last forever!!
Yeah can be a bit of a nightmare finding room to get a cast off, that’s one of the major drawbacks. Tell me about it. Twitching to get back out on the rivers, got some sessions planned that should bring a few nice perch 👍🏻
Cheers Eddie! Hopefully it helps save a few headaches for people just starting out with the bfs gear! Thank you for watching! Have a great Christmas 👍🏻👊🏻🎄
Excellent instructional video. Thank you! Can I ask - how long is your (presumably FC or mono) leader and which knot to you use to attach to the braid? Does it foul on the rings on the cast? Also, what braid diameter do you recommend?
Thank you v much! Just thought it would help a newer bfs angler negate some of the issues I had when starting out. I like to use around 5ft of FC in 0.20mm on this set up and the braid is 0.12mm. I did a video on the knot I use, not sure what the name of it is. It’s a great knot. Easy enough to tie and if it’s done correctly it’s super smooth through micro guides. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻👊🏻
Many thanks indeed! I shall copy directly. Just bought my first bfs outfit which I’m looking forward to trying soon. (Am predominantly a fly fisherman but enjoy lure fishing for perch and pike)
@troutking7986 brilliant! I’m sure you will have a great time with it! You may have a few headaches but it’s well worth sticking with. If you need any help give me a shout, tight lines 👍🏻👊🏻
I have been using my new BFS Set up all winter, I have been through the learning curve adjusting spool tensioner and brakes and getting my fair share of back lashes, but like you I prefer thumbing the spool, I use fluorocarbon straight through what brand would you recommend for FC.
Hi Dave! Great to hear your getting to grips with it! I’ve always struggled with using flouro straight through for backlashes but if you prefer that and you don’t want to spend a fortune the Berkeley trilene fc would be a good option. Depends how much you want to spend tbh 👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks mate, I’ve found spinning and casting reels both have their drawbacks but like that I’m not having to mess around with bail arms. And that you can keep a tight line with your thumb on the spool so any bites on the drop can be hit straight away without reaching to throw the bail arm over. The initial backlashes and getting it set up properly can leave you wanting to throw in in the bin though haha 👍🏻👊🏻
I've been fishing BFS for a couple years and I still can't even begin to throw really light stuff like that. About as light as I can go is 1/8oz, anything smaller and it's a disaster. I'll try to apply some of this.
What’s the setup that you are using? Yeah it’s a few things that I’ve found helped me over the couple of years using bfs gear. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻👊🏻
It is indeed, the rod I’m using in the video is a tsurinoya trout master. Moderate action and great for the lighter lures. I employ similar technique and principals when using my major craft days rod also. That has a faster action but the idea is the same. Thanks for watching and commenting!!! Tight lines 🎣
Hi Jason, I personally prefer it as clear as possible. If the visibility is less than a foot then it can become pretty difficult with the lures. Just for a example today I fished a canal not to far away from me that suffers badly from boat traffic. Got there at 4 and had a great time till the first boat went through and turned the silt over then didn’t have a touch. Might be different on different canals but today it made a huge difference. Cheers for watching 👍🏻👊🏻
@@insearchofperch8170 I am in the midlands and have exactly the same with the canal near me, always chocolate due to the boat traffic. Thanks for the reply.
It’s a nightmare fella! First thing in the morning would be your best bet when the silt has settled I’d of thought. It’s all dependant on when you have time to get out though I suppose! No worries pal, tight lines!
5:05 No, that is literally how you are supposed to tune it. How the manufacturers tell you to tune in your spool... And you cannot use your brakes to control the spool because that's just not how it works, the spool tension affects the BEGINNING of the cast, if it's too tight or too lights you'll either birdnest straight in the beginning of the cast or in the middle. If you brake is too high, it wont cast far, and if it's too low you'll birdnest at the END of the cast.
If that works for you pal you crack on with it. I’ve heard of what you mentioned before and it seems to be over complicating it for someone trying to get to grips with a bfs reel. As I say though if it works for you that’s great 👍🏻
@insearchofperch8170 ty not many bfs or bait casters in general with clickers thinking about buying my bfs reel any new ones I should take a look at with clicker or ? Z boost? In diwa
@kabanchan5768 it depends on budget really. The gekkabijin is a fantastic reel and well worth the money. In shimano you can’t go wrong with the 22 Aldebaran, it will do pretty much anything you ask of it out of the box. There are some good cheaper options too. But as I say it’s all dependant on budget 👍🏻👊🏻
