You can steal the gear you need in act 1 when you’re first taken there. Requires specific set ups and it’s honestly a gamble on wether or not the campaign wipes.
Dumping str really is the pro strat in this game no matter what you’re doing. I feel like the world of BG3 should be largely made up of juiced up super-people with the amounts of hill giant elixir around.
If Baldur's Gate 3 has taught me anything, Winners do drugs, gaslighting people is the best way to get what you want and build relationships, you should never waste a good corpse, never fight honorably, and finally the richest person is the one who never pays for anything.
In almost 1K hours playtime I never used a single one of those. Instead I dump CON and use the amulett for a 23 CON. A single level of barbarian to get CON to AC and use a shield.
@@matunusdonnerhammer3423 I don't do weird single class dips usually because I'm not that intelligent. I do the more obvious ones like 9/3 barb fighter splits because they're very clearly signposted well to mesh with other martial classes.
Gotta commend ya on this video. It's the first of yours I've watched and it is markedly different than most of the 200+ build vids for BG3 I've seen. Like the way you laid out the build by acts. Most of the vids just show some guy blazing through the Levle Up screen and then some Act III fights. The hardest part is not what you can achieve at end game but actually levelling your character through all 3 acts. This really laid it all out in a clear, concise manner. I'll definately watch more.

I love this build. Just got into act 2 and it has been crushing the opposition. Quick question with the Yuan Ti Scale mail. It says that im not proficient with medium armor. Should i be concered by that or did i do anything wrong?
That's on me. You'll have to get medium armor proficiency to use that by being a githyanki, shield dwarf, or through a feat. Sorry I shouldn't have missed that.
@Omaha01 okay I am not any of those, should I stay with the armor you recommended in Act 1 until I can use my second Feat for medium armor Proficiency? Or is there a good alternative Act 2 chest piece? Thank you again for this build.
The Club of Hill Giant Strength that you can get from the Arcane Tower in the Underdark is also a good option and it can be equiped on the off hand if you wanna save potions for other characters
While I think this is better than elixirs, I'd still rather dump CON instead of STR. You can use the amulett for 23 CON and raise your STR to 24 with the vampire blood potion and Shar temple.
@@WhipDarling nice. Draconic? I did a Sorlock EB Blaster and it was pretty fun and cost very little resources. The only thing is if you’re going to do a full evil run Durge you should take advantage of the specific gear you get which is good if you’re dealing piercing damage. So I did a Rapier Warlock Pact of the Blade Duelist. The thing that sucks with Durge is you have to kill someone at camp. You can exploit and kill the dragon born instead of Alfira to get the Potent Robe. Which is like mandatory for a EB Sorlock. I wonder if 10 Sorcerer (fire Draconic) / 2 Wizard (for sculpt spells) would work? You lose a feat + Draconic Fly, but you can metamagic some pretty strong fire spells along without worrying about friendly fire. But an evil Durge probably doesn’t care about that 😅😅😅
What about Karlach - they are not patched extra 2d4 fire damage on unarmed attack after using soul coins? If not, she is not that worse than Astarion as monk. Second - I think that taking extra fighter class(2 levels )is a very solid option for armoured monks(only speed will decreased), and you can use shields for extra AC. And I think that one ASI to wisdom much worse than action surge and option to use any equipment.
Cool combo for gith only, you can you use diadem of arcane synergy and the gaint slayer sword from the dragon the sword double dips your strength like taven brawler (but only for damage) and arcane synergy adds your wisdom to melee attack which deal higher damage than basic monk hits. Open with flurry of blows topple to prone the enemy then you have free advantage on your melee attacks. Also monk have special animations for great swords which look sick as.
With Auntie Ethel you can actually get 3 elixirs per level. When you respec just take the first level then go see Ethel and buy 3. Then take 1 level then buy 3 more then repeat for every level.
why does Wisdom become the most important stat in this build after you respek? I understand dumping strength bc of potions, but if you lower your Constitution and buff wisdom, I don't see how that makes your flurry of blows better
@@Sethleon-qf8tl The Amulet is in the basement private stash of Janiera house. It adds 1 to wisdom. But then you gotta lose that Ki restoring amulet. So there is a tradeoff, most people won't take.
One way I went was 5 levels monk 3 levels rogue(fast hands) 2 levels fighter(action surge) 2 more levels monk for the Ki points and rest of perks with it. Gives you a ton of opportunities to attack and when you add a haste before the start of the fight it gives you a even larger opportunity to attack more I didn’t feel confident in my ability to find enough Elixir of hill giant strength so I focused my stat on strength wisdom and constitution grabbing the gloves of dexterity to keep it at 18 at all times and the headband of intellect to bring my intellect to 17 to balance everything out besides charisma been dealing a ton of damage
Great video, thanks a bunch for making it. I do have a question: if I respec Astarion, will that keep me from finishing his companion quest for some reason? Or is it only an issue if I'm actually playing him as my main character?
I made an 8 open hand/4 thief with my first character, and i can verify that it is absolutely bonkers! Somehow, my ac is 25. I'm not entirely sure how. 😅 i went with halfling for some reason. I don't remember why, but i don't regret it.
Aight so I'm following this guide and I just reached the Last Light Inn, everyone is at level 7. Am I missing something or is the Yuan-Ti armor not good for this class? It doesn't have medium armor profficiency, so I can't even cast any of the spells from things like the ring you recommended right after that or haste from the bow, and the movement speed is severely reduced. Feels like I should stick with the one from that npc vendor in the Mountain Pass that buffs your dexterity.
I just made the rest of my party open hand monk from lvl 4 and broke my game. Was god mode in every situation. Cleared entire towns. Not even fun it was so ez. Goblin camp was just feed me mobs to kill. Each party member killed a goblin per turn. And took practically zero damage doing it.
Personally would go 9-3 or even 6-4-2 of something like fighter for action surge and a free fighting style although pretty much useless and if you don’t really care for feats (which you don’t really need for a OH monk you only need tavern brawler, the 2 extra feat gave you +2 to every attack +3 to AC and +1 to initiative) then I’d even go 6-3-3 with barbarian this route gives you danger sense (advantage on dex saving throws against traps, spells and surfaces if not blinded or incapacitated)and you also get a subclass and if you go wild heart bear you gain resistance to every damage type (half damage) except psychic while raging, you also gain reckless attack which you can add after missing an attack (advantage on attack rolls against ennemies in exchange of them having advantage on you until your next turn) so in my opinion this route is better in defence and damage but slightly worse for initiative and loose out only on evasion (no damage from spell with a successful saving throw and half damage with failed saving throw) which is pretty much replaced by barbarian danger sense, stillness of mind(if you get frightened or charmed you remove the effect at the start of the next turn) but honestly do even remember the last time you were charmed or frightened, 2 ki points and 2 feats from monk and rogue levels so although a great build it’s not optimized if he at least went with monk 9 he’d get ki resonation which is the best AoE for monks then the build would be better optimized. People think feats are better than they actually are while most build need only 1 or 2 feats and will gain more from another class instead of a feat even when you want a subclass feature you only get at level 11 that 1 level in another class might be better than an extra feat not all the time since it’s only 1 level and most class will benefit from 2 or 3 level dip but sometimes it can be better
Fiiiinally someone suggesting 8/4 split for the 3 feats. 9/3 was just dumb for ki res which is hardly ever more dps. Love your guides mate. Thinking this’ll be my lone wolf run build, or gloom stalker 🫣 but feel it’s overdone along with pally. Most fun solo run recommendation build?
Late to the party, but one very very tiny detail to add at the 12 minute mark where a "no hags hair" ability score point does not matter. There is obviously some gear that provide a +1, but I dont think that is all that interesting for the monk. BUT there is a chance to get the "extra hidden" +1 to charisma when doing the mirror of loss and getting the patriars memory so there is a very tiny (literal) point in favor of just putting that extra point into charisma.
I can add something to your build, in Act you can get the thingy that makes vulnerable to psychic damage, if your monk deals, it will double de psychic for every punch, it’s like 1d8 per punch, and you punch 6 times, so like 6d16 imagine that power, yeah it make my honor mode ultra easy
Bracers of defense l, +2 ac for act 1. Bracers of dex, sets dex to 18, can dump dex and pump int/cha if you want to pass convos or int if you pick up the stone in act 2 that makes everyone effected happy (and vulnerable to psychic dmg) which arguably is better than any of the elemental gloves.
I only use 1 barbarian level for the CON (use amulett) to AC bonus and the ability to use a shield. I still think you should take 3 thief rogue levels, because to extra bonus action is just too powerful for this monk to skip.
Why not start the game with one level of Rogue before all your monk levels ? Rogues at startup get 4 skills plus two extra proficiencies. A monk just gets two.
Hi, for Act 2 Gear you mentioned the Yuan-Ti Scale Mail, but my monk isn't proficient with Medium Armour. If I were to use it, I wouldnt be able to cast spells (like blur or invis from the ring, misty step from boots, etc.) Should I go for the Armour anyways? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm new to BG3. Thank you.
hi, i've been using this build for like 3 days now and i just got to act 2, the build is insanely strong and really fun, my question is is Yuan ti really better than graceful cloth? because the only thing that really changes is that you go from 18 AC to 19 AC but u kind of lose the double dice on stealth checks and you also lose 5 mts per turn, the iniciative roll is not really necessary because you pretty much attack first every time so i'd like to know what u think about it
Im playing my Evil run as Rasputin, a Half-Woodelf Open Hand Monk with this exact Build. Constantly on Drugs to acchieve inhuman feats historically fits "Rasputin, the Mad Monk" pretty well😂
Just made it to act 3. The green airbenders got me re thinking life decisions. I didn’t want to side with the squid guy but I ain’t have no choice these people crazy 😂
If you make a Transmutation sorcerer with a very high wisdom stat and Medicine profficiency you can effectivly make 2 potions every single time you create 1,Allowing you to have near endless Potions of strength speed and bloodlust
There is a chest piece that you can purchase in act 3 called fhe armour of agility and that is a better version of the yuan-ti scale male. I was able to dump all of my points into wisdom and have a 21 ac so not to bad
Hmm never thought about that one. Might try it later on tonight for a bit. Others too 6-7/5-6 Monk/light/tempest cleric. Depending on party composition 8 Open hand monk/3 rogue/1 cleric. 1 cleric gets me guidance/water spell/Sanctuary, maybe bless. This one for a non-cleric party only.
@@randycaputo3949 ya you can get all those spells except sanctuary as a druid, the extra necrotic damage for every unarmed attack just stacks up so much, plus a useable reaction. I do like tempest cleric dip for a lot of builds, just don’t see it here; don’t do enough electric or cold damage to make it worth it and don’t need the armor or weapons. If you still want cleric bc your going no cleric party and want heals, Maybe knowledge for more skills and expertise? Or life just for added healing bonuses? Just ideas
It's for the extra feat. You could also go your route. Just depemds if you need more AOE in your group or not. I may have mentioned that in the video briefly but can't remember
@@Omaha01btw just letting you know you can use a staff from untie in the grove that helps this build a lot im going all run with it. Thanks again great build lots of fun
LV 3 rogue thief to get the bonus action that stacks- mine does up to 6 attacks- tavern brawler - great weapons master- each crit hit add another attack if u hit you can clear a group. Also you hit one foe and get a attack that damages them all hitting one guy - wicked build - with the gear baller
Park your character beside Ethel, do a series of partial rests (if you care about wasting food), and buy from her between every rest. 12-15 should last you until way into Act 2.
@@UrbanNilssonOssian Tbh I was thinking about using them in act 3 only since you gets the kushigo boots only there and then just going str normally, you don't use wis on monk anyway otherwise right?
You use wisdom for your manifestation buffs and also AC from unarmoured defence. Dumping str and using elixirs is the optimal way to play monk. You can buy 3 potions from Ethel every long rest and every level up, you can't get enough of the act 1 elixirs to have 3 characters using them all the way through the game.
anything that doesn't dump strength and use cloud giant potions is probably worse, unless you absolutely need an elixir for a specific magic resistance
Assuming you don't choose Astarion, you can do 30-52 damage per punch if you include psionic overload. You can punch 6 times at level 12 = 180-312 damage. If you include haste and wholeness of body you can punch 10 times per turn. Which comes out to 300-520 damage. Without Psionic overload or Astarion: 174-288 and 290-480 With Astarion+Psionic Overload: 186-372 and 310-620 Thanks for watching! :)
How do you punch 10 times? I'm currently running your build on honor mode and it works really good. 2 times from 1 action, 2 times from 2 bonus actions, 2 times from haste and 1 from wholeness of body. What am I missing?@@Omaha01
You realize there's tons videos of bg3 builds out there? I believe less than 10% didn't know how good monk/rogue is. What makes me want to stay and watch? You could do better
If you already have a good AOE class in your party like wizard or Sorcerer I'd focus on the single target damage. But you can't really go wrong either way
