Chapter 7 ends with 7 different topics that Arjuna, as indicated in the following chapter is still confused about. They are:
Brahman
Adhyatma
Adhibhuta
Adhidaiva
Karma
Adhiyajna
Prayana kala
Lord says those who know me pertaining to elements, sacrifice and all the devatas as indicated by these terms will know me even at the time of death. They are very steadfast in mind.So understanding them is important to understand Bhagwan.
Chapter 8 now starts by explaining these terms.
This chapter starts by Arjuna asking the Supreme Lord the meaning of the following words :
Verse 1 :
Brahman: What is that Brahman ?Is Brahman without name and form, action or are we talking about Brahman expressing with Maya as God.
Adhyatma: What is this inner self, are we the body, mind ,intellect or are we jeeva the individual and what is meant by pertaining to Atma
Karma: Is defined in so many contexts in the Gita hence Arjuna is asking to please define Karma once again
Adhibhuta: What is pertaining to elements mean, is it just the five elements or there is more
Adhidaiva: What does it mean when it is said pertaining to all devatas
Verse 2:
Adhiyajna: Arjuna is asking Lord Krishna, how is God in this body please explain. How can people know you at the time of death? Death is very uncertain, how does one know you at the end? How does one prepare for death? What does It means to live centered in you and leave this world without anxiety, pain and suffering
Now Bhagwan speaks and answers all Arjuna's questions
Verse 3:
Brahman: is the Imperishable supreme being, Akshara , it means that which is imperishable.Essentially everything around us is perishable jobs, family, homes, our bodies. This is the nature of the world.
Only Brahman is pure existence and consciousness which is infinite, that which never decays. Brahman is the substratum of this world. Thus the nature of Brahman is also my true self.
Adhyatma is Brahman with respect to the individual
Karma: Here it means sacrifice or letting go.It means letting go of our selfishness without personal agenda for a higher vision. That is real action.
Action should be transformative . God appears when we do an act of sacrifice
Takeaway: Definition of Karma :When we shrink our individuality and merge with totality.
Verse 4:
Explaining further :
Adhibhuta is the perishable existence, the mind, body, intellect. It is Lord's perishable nature, the whole world of phenomenon of the Universe is indicated here.
Adhidaiva here means cosmic mind,, that special faculty that presides over each activity and knowledge in a living being eg; the faculty of vision in the eyes, audition in the ears ,smelling in our nose etc;
Adhiyajna: is me, Ishwara Antaryami, who is in everyone's body. It is referred to as the voice of God which is the answer we get to difficult questions when we sit in silence.
Take away: Individual mind is directly connected to the total mind , the Supreme when we are in total silence.
By giving these definitions the Lord is suggesting in a subtle way that the Eternal Self alone is Real and all else are delusory superimpositions upon it. An individual who lives with this awareness comes to experience oneself as a Divine Witness.
