This is an LP record of Pt Bhimsen Joshi. I heard it for the first time in 1968 on my simple HMV gramophone, 'Calypso'. It was maddening. What voice, what sense of beauty and rhythm ........ Unique .....
A rare treat to listen to this rendition by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi that too 55 years back recording with Chndrakant Kamat on tabla and Eknath Thakurdas on harmonium.
Its a fact that a lot of people remember Pt. Bhimsen Joshi for his "Mile Sur mera Tumhara" performance, which in itself does not do any justice to his abilities as an icon in Indian classical vocal music. There are certain raags which only Pt. Bhimsen Joshi has come to personify such as Raga Miyan ki Todi Raga Shuddha Kalyan, Raga Brindavani Sarang etc. even,my knowledge to Pt. Bhimsen's music only lay in the Dasara pada and other devotional songs performed by him..but lately, it has been a revelation to me w.r.t his performances of key ragas in Hindustani vocal music domain such as raga Multani, Raga Miyan ki Malhar etc (apart from the ones already stated above)..
True..Its almost impossible for others to scale the heights he reached in the domains of Todi, Malkouns, Darbaari, Multani, Puriya, Shuddha Kalyan to name a few.
Harish Inamdar Please don't make ignorant comments even Panditji himself won't agree with you. It's an insult to the legendary singers of India. For instance, can you say that the likes of Ustad Amir Khan, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Pt Omkarnath Thakur etc, haven't scaled the heights of these Ragas. Stop comparing greats, you will only make a fool of yourself. India has produced such great musicians that it will take more than a life time to understand their work. Each on his day will sound greater than the other. We are blessed to belong to a country which has produced such great son's and daughter's. Let's appreciate their musical contributions without comparing them.
r8rdarklord Absolutely true. Only fools who do not understand the beauty of different ragas try to compare the greats with each other. You should not, for instance, compare Rag Darbari sung by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi with the one rendered by Ustad Amir Khan. The same rag with different approach and, both are beautiful in their own rights. This is true with all the great artists. Please don't fool yourselves but enjoy. All rendered by GREATS and we are blessed by experiencing them!
