Since 1990, tens of thousands of ethnic Nepalese have been driven out of the tiny secretive Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, ruled by a minority of Tibetan descent. Many have fled to refugee camps in Nepal where they tell a harrowing tale of Bhutan s attempts to clear the country of Nepalese-speaking people. Young men are imprisoned and tortured and are freed only if they sign a voluntary leaving certificate. The ethnic Nepalese make up 50% of Bhutan s population and some have lived there for many generations. The Nepalese Prime Minister hopes that the people will one day be allowed to return. We go as tourists to Bhutan, to glean further evidence of the way ethnic Nepalese are treated, and find a country trapped in time where even TV sets are illegal.

Bhutan advertises itself as the most peaceful country. There are many refugees in Nepal who still want to return back to their country. I hope Bhutan sorts out this issue very soon, or the world's going to know about this dark side of Bhutan.

Bhutan is peaceful , no doubts about it. Until the nepalese came along with their Gurkhalnd ideology of separate land. can't even believe it. Some one coming to your house and claiming it as theirs. Looks like they didn't study properly. otherwise the term " In Rome do what Romans do" might have avoided the situation. Considering that many of those people were nepalese speaking from Neighboring Indian states, they had the gumption of even wanting to separate Bhutan and believing they might succeed. lol.

@@insight7232yes exactly! And the only side presented on the internet is what Bhutan has gruesomely done to them while what they did has been hidden away! They need to know why Bhutan sought to what we did then. Native Bhutanese families were murdered and some heads were even hung on trees while some were skinned alive to make us fear them. This is just a small side I’ve written here. People don’t know what the Bhutanese went through back then living under constant fear and this is something that needs to be addressed.

@@insight7232 Certainly, there was an incident when the Bhutanese government intended to grant citizenship to these individuals. However, instead of cooperating with the registration process, they captured the Bhutanese delegation sent to collect their details, locked them in a room, and set it on fire. Additionally, they set fire random Bhutanese homes. Despite these actions, they continue to assert themselves as victims. The internet needs to know😞

It's been almost 4 years since the video was posted but I knew about the bhutanese nepali or lhotsam refugees only recently. I am from the west of Bhutan and my ethnic is ngalop, I must agree that we have never learned about this in school and I have been researching about this issue a lot. I hate to admit that ethnic cleansing was a part of Bhutan but people should also not forget that 1/5 of lhotsams were still there in the country. I guess the king just saw lhotsams as a bigger threat to taking power from the ngalops as the population was increasing, I also learned that at that time Bhutan was planning to join the UN nation or so (correct me if I am wrong) , inorder to join the organization Bhutan needed to have a certain amount of population so may be that's how Lhotsams were driven out of the country. What the king and the government did was wrong and I am sure there were better ways to deal the problem but the country was so underdeveloped that they needed help. Not everyone in Bhutan are racists, the situation are much more better than how it was after the fifth king was crowned also he did take back some of the bhutanese nepali refugees back to the country after he saw the situations. Edit: I don't mean to seek sympathy for the actions Bhutan has done because the wound may never heal and I am sure no matter how many apologies we make can never be enough to put an end to the sufferings people faced. But I hope there could be better ways to grow together without hatred and where this topic could be educated without any tamper to the real history of ethnic cleansing in Bhutan.

You are right in some places, but Bhutan actually became part of the UN in 1968, in the reign of the third king, and there is no ceiling of population to join the UN, all peace loving nations are free to join. The actual reason the people had to leave the country was because of a minority of anti-nationals after their own selfish ideals who ran their propaganda and fished in nepali people (very few of those mind you) that ran a bad image against lhotshams. Most of the people who were forced to leave the country didn't even know about the riots and were sent off by the evil army officials (notice the usage of evil) who were after their land and property (mainly orange orchards). There was no part of the king played in sending off innocent people. It was because the army officials beat and tortured them into singing voluntary country leaving agreements that they actually had to go.

As a grandson of a Bhutanese refugee, the story told by my grandfather was horrifying. More than half of the people died while traveling from Bhutan to Nepal. My grandfather left all his land in Bhutan and came to Nepal. It was a total genocide act by Bhutan. That's not a country portrayed as peace-loving should act. But I am grateful to Nepal for providing my grandfather a place to call home. Now I am in America living through the UN program but Bhutan will always have a negative impression on my heart. What can you expect from a country who sold more than 700 youths to Japan as a slave?

Wherever you are, I just pray to God that you're safe and sound. And yes, it was a pure 20th century genocide but still Bhutan is unpunished. If King would still be the head of Constitution, I'm sure the King would have helped you guys. I don't mean it to sound like an excuse to why the government including the king did this but in my opinion calling it the peace loving country does not mean that it has no heinous past. TBH I also agree that it would be really hard for Nepali refuges to not have a negative impression but I hope that this could be solved or the future kings could educate and clarify this whole situation to the world because the crimes committed were devastating and it was clearly a genocide.

Wouldn't "most intense campaigns of persecution in the world" usually mean they've all been tortured, imprisoned, or killed? Maybe Mao, Stalin, Hitler, the Kims, etc., don't stand out to the writers and producers here for their examples of "intense" and "persecution," but I'm fairly sure this doesn't rise to that level, difficult and sad as some of the behaviors and the loss of citizenship and residency have been. Bhutan does not make it easy for those of other religious and ethnic persuasions to live there, but why is this expected? They have been transitioning to democracy and I don't recall that there is any requirement, political, moral, or otherwise, that a country's king or its people have to choose to be a multicultural melting pot. Bhutan should have to accept Maoism? Hinduism? The Nepalese language? The fate of Sikkim? The failure to grasp that in the interviews is shocking as well.

The statement made by refugee Nepalese is totally false. Being in the land of Bhutan, one should follow the rules and regulation of that country. That time in 1994, the southern Citizens of Bhutan, so called Nepalese made social movement going against the rules of the government, trying to separate Bhutanese citizens into two groups (Bhutanese and Nepalese) with different religion and culture, which is totally not acceptable. A country can have a rule that must be followed by all citizens not selectively. Hence, two bring law and order, the country adopted to fix those going against country, that time Nepalese who attempted to fight against government fled. This is the reason why they left Bhutan and became refugee of Bhutan.

Bhutan has to display it's power in a restless region. Other countries in the region have cleansed ethnicities before or doing it right now. All the countries in South Asia are India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar (which is more south-east but we'll allow it), Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Now, looking through the history of these countries, almost all of them have done ethnic cleansing or are suppressing a minority. India have done it to separatists in the East of its country and the Sikh genocide in 1984. Pakistan have been suppressing the Baluchis, a group who occupy the state of Baluchistan, and claim they were illegally annexed in 1947. Afghanistan hasn't, mostly due to the turmoil and civil war on it's land, but with several small societies living in Afghanistan, it is likely. Nepal is a mostly peaceful country so hasn't really done any of this. Bhutan has been killing 100,000 Nepalese refugees who used to live in southern Bhutan. Their void was filled by Indian separatists, leading to Operation All Clear in 2004. Bangladesh hasn't been doing ethnic cleansing, but for years Hindus and Muslims have been clashing in Bangladesh. During Bangladesh's independence war, approximately 3 million people died. Atrocities everywhere in the streets of Dhaka. So while we can be sure there is some high ethnic tension and discrimination there, cleansing is acted upon immediately by the UN. Myanmar's civil war started because of cleansing in the Rohingya district of the population, so you can't really the rebels for starting a war. Sri Lanka suppressed it's ethnic Tamil minority, which in turn led to a 60 year war with the Tamil Tigers, a group regarded by the US as a terrorist group. The Maldives hasn't been doing any of this as far as I know because of the amount of land they don't have, there isn't anything to lose blood over. The Bhutanese government were probably frightened by the amount of people in the south and thought they could start a revolution. After all, Bhutan is one of the last remaining monarchies. That's why they keep the communist party under control and ban them from Bhutanese politics. Bhutan is slowly evolving from a monarchy to an authoritarian state, and it needs to display it's power and dominance, to show it is not a weak country. This stuff is wrong, but the reason is fear, power and control. Bhutan knew it would be backed by India, so never worried about invasion. Bhutan is not a North Korea, but more of a Britain in Ireland.
@openbuddhistforuminternational
Ethnic cleansing like this is everywhere criminal !!!
@kinleypenjor9399
@kinleypenjor9399 2 года назад
The situation on the ground is very different from what is portrayed in the media. It doesn't take much to divide human beings and divisions based on cast,creed,ethnicity and faith always existed in this part of the world. That being said, what Bhutan has done in the past was not necessarily based on ethnicity rather a strong sense of national sovereignty which was constantly under threat from two giant neighbours(India and China). And the threat is not gone today even after the king gave away absolute monarchy and set up parliament and elections. China still has border disputes with Bhutan and India also holds some power over Bhutan's economy and elections. Lastly, what the king and the government did in the 90's has to be looked from both the sides.

I hope I live to see the day when the Bhutanese government makes an official apology statement for the atrocities committed against the bhutanese lotshampas who were murdered, raped, tortured and driven out without any reasonable explanation but for the fact that they were simply people with different ethnicity, culture and religion. I get that bhutan wanted to implement the idea of one nation and one people but what is humanity without diversity. In this case, the idea of unity becomes a toxicity. And I know there might have been casualties on both sides but in this case the one who is clearly more disadvantaged and on the less powerful scale is evidently the bhutanese lotshampas.

Originally from Nepal, they were given lands and granted full citizenship by our generous and kind hearted king as a gesture of friendship towards Nepal, but the Nepali/bhutanese started going against the government and the king who was so kind to them, killings and violence started, they wanted to live under their own rules, lived under no rules, had no consideration or respect for the overall bhutanese people, they wanted their own small government and did not want to follow national rules, in my opinion that is like biting the hand that feeds you, this is the primary reason why they had to be expelled from the country, the riots and public defamation against the country and the king could not be controlled peacefully. You cant find the truth on the news and videos like this give you a one sided story. Even today, fake articles are being written by nepalese about what happened back then. Research pls...
