The Chele La Pass is around 40kms from Paro and you have to climb all the way up, more than a kilometre of altitude gained. It takes around an hour and a half to reach... The roads are winding as expected, but also very narrow and most of it bad. It's difficult if you are in a Sedan, since every time you get off the road or hit a pothole, breaking the car is on the back of your mind. I'd suggest an SUV (though cars can perfectly do it) for more peace of mind and comfort knowing nothing is going to scrape and the suspension parts are going to last longer!
The Chele La Pass, standing tall at 3988 meters above sea level, is the highest motorable road in Bhutan. This is on the way to Haa Valley from Paro. However, for those expecting Ladakh type of a pass will be disappointed. I'm not saying the views are bad, they are excellent... You even see the snow-capped Kangchenjunga range, but for me, the views are not elaborate. Check it out for yourself!
