I have just been diagnosed with this at age 57 during a routine echo as i have ectopic beats regularly. My echo report was otherwise completely normal and in respect of this valve "good leaflet mobility, no signs of regurgitation or stenosis, and no sign of aortic root dilatation." It is a type 2 bicuspid and i wonder if this is one of the less risky types, as my cardiologist said i am in the minority of people with this type of valve having zero issues with it in my late 50s?

Hei Peter, i am diagnosed with having a bicuspid valve, i always say i dont have a mercedes valve ;-) , my father had one too but his valve had to be replaced when he was 65 . my cardio doctor is measuring the turbulence every 2 years and its quite stable the last years , my question is what kind of flow number(i dont remember the measuring unit) is like critical in your opinion

Thank you Marc for your comment. In general, severe aortic valve stenosis is assessed based on the presence or absence of symptoms plus the clinical examination (there are some changes for example to the way the pulse feels and how the blood pressure values changes and how the heart murmur sounds) plus measurements from the echocardiogram. Generally as the valve area becomes less than 1.0cm2 the valve may show signs of severe stenosis but other factors such as the 'gradient' across the valve are also measured when you have an echo test.

Hi, my uncle and cousin have been diagnosed with this . What are the chances I have this too? I have been doing heavy weightlifting for over 4 years and never had any problems , do you think I should be concerned? Thanks

I am 32 years old, heavy into the weights. I got diagnosed with it last year and my cardiologist told me to stop the heavy weights. Never had any problems before. If i were you, I would get it checked out to be on the safe side

If you are concerned, get an echocardiogram.

My son is 9 years old. He had a double committed vsd which they closed with a gortex patch when he was 3months old. He is growing well and thriving playing sports no problems, they say his heart is in great condition now but he still has this bi valve (they said he still has a significant murmur with a grade one to two over six; ejection systolic murmur best heard at the upper and lower left sternal border) However there is no sign of stenosis or regurgitation. Can he maintain not having any stenosis/aneurysms/regurg if i keep him on a healthy diet/, exercise? Or will it inevitably become damaged and will need changing one day? 😢

What should I do now they say I need surgery bicuspid stenouses.I don't feel anything but they say I should do the open heart surgery as soon as possible please advise.

They can replace these valves with a catheter through your leg. They use 4D MRI to time the replacement with your heart beat.

Hi Peter I have a question can I play competetive sports with this condition
@RJ.MacReady

I’ve lived 53 years with this and just found out. I’ve played sports, been in the Navy never had problems. Until now.

@@RJ.MacReady yeah for me this was found when I was 3 and it instantly developed mild aortic stenosis so now I'm 15 and I am really restricted from physical activity I spent days feeling sad about not being able to join the army nor participating in any proffessional sport

Peter, is that the valve that can sometimes be replaced with a valve from a pig's heart or a metallic substitute valve?
@HeartMatters
@HeartMatters 2 года назад
Correct! when this valve does become weaker and needs surgical replacing, it can be replaced with a tissue (bioprosthetic) valve made of animal tissue (cow/pig) or a stainless steel valve (which means that blood thinning tablets like warfarin would be needed).

I just turned 53 and I was just diagnosed with this condition. I have Stenosis too.guess I honestly don’t know what to do.

all depends on the degree of stenosis and more often in cases of mild and moderate we would not consider any surgical intervention. Always good to keep in touch with your cardiologist who would know how often you should have follow up

Hi Peter, what would be considered a normal range troponin level for someone with aortic bicuspid valve, I understand different facilities use different standards on what would be considered normal however for a young adult what would you expect to see. My troponin is currently 28 using the high sensitivity method, is that consistent with someone with mild aortic bicuspid valve,
@HeartMatters
@HeartMatters Год назад
Thanks for your question, troponin levels usually are not linked to valve issues like bicuspid valves. They are markers that are usually raised within hours of a cardiac event and that settle down over the course of hours and days. There are many other causes for raised troponin levels and as we always suggest, having this assessed by your physician is best. Thanks for supporting the channel!

@@HeartMatters Thank you for your response - I am booked in to see a cardiologist next week as this has been an ongoing issue for over 7 months now . All of my issues happened after having covid infection so I wonder if this is all related to that. 7 months ago I had a troponin of 48 and ended up in hospital however tests showed no MI or anything out of the ordinary besides a the bicuspid Aortic valve and dilated right ventricle. Going off the very little they told me , the assumption was that I have pericarditis. Is a troponin level of 48-28 consistent with chronic pericarditis? Again I curious about the topic consider and nothing you tell me as medical advice, I am curious about learning more about this topic and thank you for your time .

Well, mine is expected to need surgery in 4 years when I'm 18.

you can be surprised that sometimes the valve lasts longer than what is predicted. It all depends on symptoms and findings on the heart scan that will look at how the valve is functioning and the size of the aorta
@jijijiji7290
@jijijiji7290 Год назад
@@HeartMatters and also the other way around! We were told that my son’s aortic valve will likely last longer. He is only 15, and today the doctor referred us to a surgeon and she said that his left chamber is stressed and his valve is dilated. In 2 weeks, we will have a final decision from the surgeons team. I had high hope that his valve will make it till age 18 so we can avoid open heart surgery. We just have to wait and pray!!
