What is a Bicuspid Aortic Valve? A bicuspid aortic valve is the most common congenital heart defect. 1 in 100 people have a Bicuspid aortic valve and in these patients the bicuspid valve means that they are more prone to developing heart valve narrowing or leaking and this can be both dangerous but also can impact on quality of life. In this video, I discuss everything we know about bicuspid aortic valves and how to treat them

I would look into taking antibiotics for things such as teeth cleaning or any surgery. This will prevent you getting a heart infection or endocarditis. The pooling of blood behind the valve is prone to infection even after something as simple as a teeth cleaning.

I was 53, fit and healthy, I started having dizzy spells and then I collapsed unconscious at home, I was ordered to go to hospital by my GP. It turned out I needed my Aortic valve replaced and a triple bypass, diagnosed and operated on in 17 days. That was July 23 now I'm healthier than ever and I've been in the gym four days a week for the last five months.

In the most severe cases, when symptoms are present at birth or in early infancy, surgical repair of the valve must be performed immediately. In other cases, people can go their whole lives without knowing they have BAVD.👍

Hi Dr. Gupta, thank you for posting this valuable information. My 18-year-old son was recently diagnosed as having a congenital bicuspid aortic valve and this was discovered on a exam for some other issues. The cardiologist checked his echo and stated that the valve is normally functioning and not leaking. He is generally in good health And my concern or question is other than diet and exercise and yearly echo check ups, what else can be done from a preventive standpoint to maintain valve health and also do most valves need to be repaired or replaced by the time a person turns 60 or so? Thanks again for your valuable work God bless
@RubberWilbur

its not something he has to even think about until he is in his 40s or 50s. Just make sure to tell him to always have his blood pressure in check because HBP can wear out the valve quicker.

Hi Dr. Gupta - thank you for this video (and your others). They have been incredibly helpful! I have a question regarding the TAVR procedure. A family member diagnosed with severe aortic valve stenosis recently had a TAVR procedure. All seems to be functioning well, but his main concern was that even after the TAVR insert, his valve diameter is still only between 1-1.3cm (prior to surgery, my recollection was that it was hovering around 0.7). Is it typical for the diameter to remain so narrow even after the procedure? Also wondering if it is still possible for him to have a second TAVR inserted once this first one reaches the end of its life? Your expert opinion on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for this video, very informative indeed and helps me prepare for my next annual visit to my cardiologist. In my case as soon as I was born a murmur was heard and I was diagnosed. However, it did not impact my life until my early 20s and had surgery (Ross procedure) at 25. I am now 34 and approaching time to fix valve again. I was wondering: Is the procedure mentioned in the video, that is not as invasive, the balloon thing my Dr been talking to me about? Also, when talking about a scan, is that an MRI scan? In my case Ive been doing echocardiograms and stress tests but not "scans" per se, as such, I am a bit curious. For reference I am being treated in Canada. I have already subscribed :)

Similar here. At age 47. Doctors missed mine as well, What we call general practitioners here in the UK . Breathlessness chest pains visits to A&E, only after I was sent for a echocardiogram was it picked up, I can't blame the general practitioners, not their specialty really guess that's why we have the specialist. Possibly better that you had a virus - infection before it damaged the heart itself, would seem the years of stress on my heart has coursed more damage than normal. Left ventricular weaknesses. Is a vegan diet harmful to valve problems for any reason? This video is very timely, as I just decided to get my whole vascular system looked at. Why did I have to come up with that on my own? I have a mitral valve prolapse that seems to confound the cardiologists because it's unusual in some way. My other valves are leaky (one or two more than trivial) but the cardiologists never comment on them. Since mvr is still mild (after 39 years of following it), they don't mention repair, but the EP who just did extensive ablation said that I need to get it looked into. He had a confounded look on his face.
@MrCarstennielsen
@MrCarstennielsen 3 года назад
I guess calcification of the valve will mean it is more likely to not being able to open and close correct, to function correct? But what about people using pomegranate for decalcifiaction, which seems really, really effective when used, I mean, not merely the juice and in small amounts but serious amounts or dosis of powerdered fruit, like the studies in rodents used and proven effective. It seems to needed taken in between meals, maybe for so not to be diluted or changing the PH too much... It seems a very potent ... natural treatment evaluated from the way it taste and feels sharp and just generaly feel like provocative or usable way more than great based on an emotionally prefered taste by the testingperson. I am generaly very sceptical about how effective natural medicines are, espc. cause often misused (comapred to the relation, context and environment they was found effective in) or of poor quality, but pomegranate, even though high in fruitsugar, which should increase risk for calcification, seem a very interesting item to put at test; I love if more people would test it with me for us to share experiences and so create a kind of study out of this;)..

Mine was found during a military medical at age 16. The doctor heard a murmur. At age 54 got a mechanical valve. I also ended up getting a 4Xbypass at the same time. The clogging arteries were discovered during the build up to the AVR surgery. The complication to the valve was severe regurgitation, which put me at risk for a stroke or heart event. I had varicosed veins removed at twenty. I was then a fit sailor. I guess I was born with a dodgy cvs. I encourage people to give up smoking.
