www.Heart-Valv... - As new minimally-invasive devices for the treatment of aortic valve disease transform heart valve therapy, patients with bicuspid aortic valves are asking important questions about the optimal use of surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) techniques given their congenital, two-cusp valves.
For that reason, we interviewed Dr. Christopher Mehta, a leading cardiac surgeon at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Mehta specializes in the treatment of bicuspid aortic valves, aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation and aortic aneurysms.
Key questions asked-and-answered in this video include:
1. What is a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV)? Prevalence? Symptoms? Causes? Risks?
2. How does Northwestern Medicine manage patients with BAV?
3. When is treatment needed for bicuspid aortic valve patients?
4. What are the treatment options? SAVR? TAVR?
5. What criteria does Dr. Mehta and the patient consider for evaluating a SAVR vs. TAVR treatment option?
6. Specific to BAV patients…What are outcomes for both SAVR? TAVR?
7. Have there been clinical trials for BAV patients specific to TAVR? Why of why not?
8. What is Dr. Mehta's #1 piece of advice for BAV patients needing treatment?
To learn more or schedule an appointment with Dr. Mehta, please call (888) 515-0285 or visit www.heart-valv....

I didn't know I had this until last March when I was 53. It was very shocking and I have found it difficult at times to come to terms with it. I know the doctors are keeping an eye on me but sometimes it's just plain scary.

I was in my early 40’s when first diagnosed with both a bicuspid heart valve and an ascending aortic aneurysm. I’m now 72 and there hasn’t been too much of a change. Diet and lifestyle can help in delaying and possibly eliminating the need for surgery.

Thank you Adam, and Dr. Mehta for this very helpful information. I am a patient in my 50's who's opting to have TAVR to replace my bicuspid aortic valve next month.

I'm getting the Inspiris valve put in on the 22nd. I'm 45, hoping the longevity is better than the expected 10 to 20 years of most tissue valves.

I have a bicusid aortic valve that was spotted when I was 56, I now have to have cardiograms every 6 months and I have been told that I am on the cusp of having the open heart surgery. Yes, I am nervous.

Mine was just diagnosed and I’m 62. Never knew I had a bicuspid valve. Dr said to watch for symptoms to let me know when it’s time for replacement.

Adam, I don't think you have a video on this, so I thought it would be a good subject to bring up with one of the experts. That is, when a valve is heavily calcified, yet not narrow enough for surgery, what is the risk of stroke from calcium breaking off? That can be followed up with, what the risk of stroke is from calcium breaking off if one gets a TAVR (I noticed in this video, he said the TAVR just pushes the calcified leaflets out of the way, so sounds risky. For reference, I am in my early 50's with moderate/severe calcified valve, no symptoms and now on 6 month echo watch with a 1-3 year best guess window for when I will need surgery so I am looking into this now. By the way, I live in Indiana, I was thinking that is where you were from, but can't remember.

I have been taking care of TAVR patients for over a decade. Our hospital trialed the Edwards valves at Emory. I have taken care of both pre and post op TAVRS. And in ten years, I have not seen any of our patients stroke post op in the hospital.

How is the recovery. I have already had a porcine replacement and a bovine patch to my aorta. I had this done 14 years ago. My valve may now have calcium. I’m pretty energetic. Am I going to lose this. I’m 59

I do have a question ; it seems to me that any intervention that avoids huge incisions (and a trip on the heart lung machine) is always going to be more 'risky' than the less invasive TAVR so why doesn't everyone just get the TAVR?
@HeartValveSurgery
@HeartValveSurgery 2 года назад
Hi Teresa, You raise a great question. As you may know, TAVR is currently approved for high-risk, intermediate-risk and low-risk patients. Here is some additional information that might help you learn more about the FDA-approval process. We hope this helps - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/fda-approval-low-risk-tavr.php.

@HeartValveSurgery 2 года назад
Hi Razzorback, We're not sure we understand your question. Are you referring to the diseases (e.g. aortic stenosis) that are caused by a bicuspid aortic valve? If so, you can learn more about aortic stenosis and the dangers it poses to patients with a bicuspid aortic valve at this link - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/heart-surgery-blog/2019/03/04/aortic-stenosis-mortality-incidence/. Or, are you referring to the mortality rate of surgeries to treat bicuspid aortic valves? If so, you can learn more about mortality for heart valve surgery at this link - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/valve-mortality-surgery-repair-replacement.php. We hope that helps!
