interested in the bike bell not law here where I live. I also found I don't get a very good reaction from pedestrians on shared path. They seem to freeze like deer in the headlights or try to scatter in random directions.
I live in Ecuador, here is not requested by law. The other day a friend had installed one of those on his bike and when he passed us, he screamed: "ice cream, ice cream". Everyone just laughed!!
I headed your advice, and bought a bell, on the way home from a root canal. The bike shop guy thought I was mentally challenged and threw in a safety flag for free. It's a sweet bit of kit. You should do a review.
Someone needs to come up with an integrated solution. Maybe Garmin could integrate an electronic bell into the bike computer or something along those lines.
Personally I avoid shared paths wherever possible.....for the most part the bell is useless against and Ipod or mobile device with headphones........maybe they should be illegal on shared paths!
Whilst working on a grand tour a while back I saw a few pros with bells on their bikes not sure if they kept them in for the stage but it made getting through the crowds so much easier... If they're good enough for the pros....
Of you put the bell upside down under the handlebar or the stem consider drilling.a drain hole so water can get out. Otherwise the bell will eventually rust apart.
I've got an 'Orp' - combined horn and light, which is pretty good. Has a remote activation button which I can put near the gear leaver, it's pretty loud - unfortunately not so accessible in the drops and has a habit of the wire coming out when you actually want it!!
I don't leave the house without a bell. A lot of bike lanes here a separated from the road and are a meter wide. If you don't have a bell, you will spend a lot of time behind old deaf people who are riding 10km/h.
On my bike the bell points backwards while mounted on the bar. That way I can ring it with my thumb when on the bar. As you find people that feel insulted by shouts like "bike behind" you will find people who are insulted by ringing a bell. At the moment women with dogs are on my top list with "this is not a rally track" or positioning themselves in my way. There is no problem except the one they create.
I've been running a bell on my race bike for two years amd it's been awesome. personally I'm supportive of the law for this on bikepaths. yelling out I found pedestrians can panic and actually step in front of me. but wheels g the bell for some reason it's better understood from a knee-jerk perspective and ppl step out of the way on hearing it.
I use a lot of dual-use paths in the city and a bell is invaluable. On my road bike I have the Spur Cycle bell. Super low profile mount, amazing sound, but yes, it costs a little more. The Knog looks interesting but my past experience with anything made by Knog is that one little piece will break, rendering the whole unit useless. Semi-disposable at best.
That's a nice wee bell you got there ;) Mine's is black, nice n'd discreet. If ya ride in public or parks it's only courtesy to warn others your coming. Bikes are pretty silent and a couple of ding dings do the trick without scaring the crap out of folk. We wants 'em to love us precious :)
oye vie... bells?? (On a more serious note, how about replacing that big, unsightly thumb screw with a nice little alloy socket head cap screw?) My rides here (michigan, usa) involve a short bit of metropark "bike path". I always, always, always announce myself "coming up" on anyone I'm passing, but 90% or more of them have headphones on! So it's basically useless... What was Von's take on here install????
I see you did the Cooks River - I forgot to mention the evil magpie that lives just past the AFL footy oval....hope he has given up swooping for the season.
How about installing it on the drops, behind brake levers, with enough clearance, will work for very small bells, like the BBB mini. Your thoughts Shane?
but what if shared paths contain lane for pedestrians and that pedestrians are literaly deaf /older peoples walking my directions / and ofc they are walking in all three lines /2 for cyclist 1 for pedestrians/ ....
I hate bells. I took mine off. When ringing mine, I had people answer their cellphones. Or look heavenward as if having a religious experience. Saying "good morning" or "good afternoon" is much better. People think you're being friendly. Some people's headphones are so loud, they couldn't hear a cannon shot. Then when you ease past them, they jump out of their skin! :-) In the Netherlands they have a quiet clicker. It works because people are listening for it. You can't go full-out on a shared path. Not even with blue lights and a sirene.
Shane Miller Your comment literally made my day haha😂 Well here in the Netherlands it is going to cost me 35 euro if the police will catch me without bell
yes indeed... I have already started looking into moving to Aus or Canada... Know any companies needing a senior design engineer with 30+ years of automotive and defense experience?
Have that right here in New Jersey! Picked it up after litigating with a cop and he said if he was going to get party in a situation he'd write tickets for my friend for not having a bell, reflectors, etc... Got the knog Oi to cover my behind, I heard people were getting tickets too down by the shore.
Stop crying here in the NL we use bells in our road bikes and are extremely useful. When passing other experienced road bike users you can shout but when passing people on their normal bikes they might not understand what you want. I have my bell in the same position as in your bike but the bell is black and the screw is black, flush, and allen so it's hard to see.
Are bells required in Vic? The closest fine I could find was Code 2228 "Fail to have lights or equipment" but couldn't find what equipment meant: www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/penalties/fines I think I had one of those bells on my mountain bike 20 years ago before it drove me insane over bumps. These days I slow down for people and have just enough play in the old v-brake levers that I can pull them a little without braking and quickly let them go and they click loud enough for people to know I'm there.
This is like chasing up UCI rules for TT bikes! :) There's reference here: www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/bicycles
A gold bell? Could you not get a black one? It would be more discreet :) I dont mind bells on MTB's & HB's but on road bikes they just look daft. Fair play the law is the the law. I just hope that that law won't come to the uk. Just calling out "I'm coming behind you" does the job down the country lanes for me but then I never cycle on cycle path as most are uneven, dirt ridden, potholes of a mess. Much like our roads, at least in Kent anyway :)
+Lord Jijger Agreed. I was a little disappointed their marketing far outweighed their availability. Everyone seems to know about them, nobody can get one. I'll upgrade when they're out.
I use a bell as it's essential on shared paths. Shits me to tears all the headphone wearing walkers/runners. People walking dogs off the leash are the worst, you have to start dinging from 100m away. When I was riding around Albury I saw a few road bikes with bells attached to the rear hub, as the law states it must be attached to the bike (you don't have to use it). This is where these state based laws become stupid when interstate visitors and cross border residents ride across the border. Absolutely stupid law, another case of victim blaming and heaping more crap laws onto cyclists.
Hi Shane, Got a question for you (since you're techi!) I want to be able to comment on you tube under this name (my google plus name?) but don't want my google accounts name to be ''first name: lite last name: roadie'' is there any way? Currently I have made a brand account with this name (This account) and have my primary account set to my real name (which I don't want to comment with on youtube) I haven't been able to find anything anywhere on the internet.
Shane Miller I test rode one and found it to be sluggish compared to other climbing frames like "supersixevo" and ur old bike the s-works. But, I'm 6' 2" and specialized specifically modified their frame so all sizes feel the same and supersix is just great for tall riders. Just curious as you look like a tall person yourself.
I remember when "bogans" were poor people who lived in housing commission houses or flats. Now it seems "bogan" is a term rich people use to claim their down to earth?
@@gplama So why'd you call yourself one? You're clearly well off, well spoken etc. why do people like yourself call yourself a bogan? You fit none of the categories other than being Australian. I'm genuinely curious.
@@gplama I didn't delete anything did I? Anyway, I am curious to as my "bogan" is now a desired term, it never was in the 1980s and 1990s. I left Australia and lived overseas in the year 2000, I came back in 2016 so I'm not really up with why certain things have changed, for example American style pickup trucks and now called 'utes' and they're clearly not utes. People are starting to call lifts "elevators" etc. You probably wouldn't notice it unless you left for 16 years and came back. So I'm wondering why someone like yourself would call yourself a bogan when you don't have any of the typical traits. I grew up in a housing commission area in the 1980s I know what a real bogan is like and plenty of my relatives would fit the bill a lot more than you (that's a compliment by the way). And no, I don't consider myself one.
@@gplama remember this song? LOL ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BDXRT53QduU.html this is what I think of when I think of a bogan, I don't get the cultural shift. What do we call people like this now? Ultra-bogan?
What do you guys reckon about this? Looks much better and i wouldn't be embarrassed leaving it on permanently. Apparently there are a few issues with the sound it makes but if they fix it i reckon its not a bad solution. www.knog.com.au/oi-bike-bell.html
When it is available, you really should buy it. Choose the Large oi, it sounds way better than the small oi and the small oi will not even fit on the bike. I have the Large oi and it looks amazing. For a sound test take a look at my channel.
I backed the Kickstarter project in march, so I have been waiting for it for about 5 months. I think it sounds good but it could be better. However it looks amazing next to my Edge 820 mount and people can hear me coming.
Position of the bell? imgur.com/a/dAGCh Easy to reach with thumb. I use my bell when I'm 100m from pedestrians. They are so slow to react. 1 sec to react to the sound, 1 sec for them to turn their head, 1 sec for them to decide what to do. If you stress out pedestrians, its a 50/50 chance they will jump in your way. Same goes here as for driving cars, BE PREDICTABLE! Goes for pedestrians and bikers.
