Compare us to other nations around the world, and our democrats are considered downright centrist. But I do believe in a lot of left-leaning ideals, such as universal healthcare, and a higher minimum wage so that people don't have to work 3 jobs just to survive. Plus, a higher minimum wage means less people would have to rely on government assistance, since they'd have more money to spend on their basic needs.

First, looking at typical annual numbers for American deaths, there are about 3M total, and the two largest causes of death (heart disease and cancer) have about 0.6-0.7M each. So 0.5M due to SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 is in line with other causes we are familiar with, but 2M would be closer to the scale of the *total* number. Second, while the health care systems in some regions was overwhelmed, if the number of deaths was 4x greater, that would have had a much broader associated health care system overload. This could have been the biggest cause of a panic.

I did the math last March, guessing 10% of the country would get COVID and 1% of the 10% would die from it. Given 350 million Americans, 0.1% is 350k deaths. Turns out my estimate was way too low. My similar estimate for the whole planet was 8 million. Thankfully the rest of the world didn't make fighting a virus a political issue, so we're nowhere near 8 million yet.

All it takes is 1 person to come in with the virus and everyone to have their guards down because they feel safe in their rural setting and before you know it it’s running riot through the population. Because of the 2 week incubation time people spread it before they start showing symptoms - so many people here spread it to their families, customers, colleagues before we locked down again.
