When I built my extension in 1989 I had new aluminium framed windows and I had to fix the rubber gasket in and my friend who was a glazier said spray some window cleaner on the gasket as it help it slide in. They were constructed differently to those as the trims had the gasket on and the rubber was on the inside. Great video and tips, thanks for sharing your expertise and knowledge, sometimes if you want a job done correctly you have to do it yourself. 👍

Have similar problem with a simple double door but with double glazing. Our (wooden) house was prefabricated with doors and windows pre-mounted. I suspect that the guys mounting the windows and doors did a "quick and dirty", no time to lose, on to the next......They went bankrupt a couple of years ago. Guess what, nobody wants to service to finally solve the problem....I am reluctant to pull out a triple glaze pane of say 1.20 * 2.00 mtrs.....seems like it is the only way to solve the problem though....Thanks for your very clear explanation Roger. Wish we had a trustworthy guy like you around the corner.....

Great video and you share the same anxiety I do about my level threshold. no one seems to have either the knowledge or experience to have any confidence with level thresholds. Particularly the slotted drains needed on the outside above dpc. It would make a great video to evaporate the mystique with this issue in relation to building control and mitigation of moisture away from bifold/sliding doors and brickwork beneath. Roger, you raised my blood pressure today. We had (had to pay 100% up front of over £11,000) 3 sets of aluminium 3 metre wide bi-fold doors installed in our extension, we gave them measurements of openings, they said they measure themselves to prevent mistakes. The doors came the wrong size, , then the last set came too short, missing locks and keys, installed using a clear silicone sealant around the frame showing all the coloured wedges, then the door seals were all binding, there were door seals cut too short, the locking mechanisms were too tight, screws missing in guides, screws that were fitted were stripped threads. The sills were the main problem, we gave them the measurements of floor height like you did, they f----d the height and we have a 10mm high sill which is a pain, nobody was interested. Thanks for getting as stressed as us.........😆

Nathan Ellis, this isn't entirely the window installers fault. It sounds like they installed it as high as the lintel would allow. In order to fix it he had to raise the lintel. Granted the installers should have said something but its not their fault.

@markschiavone8003 4 года назад
rhys evans, doors come in stock sizes and it's the contractor's job to frame the opening to the stock size and since he had to move the lintel I'd say he framed the opening incorrectly.
@TurinTuramber
@TurinTuramber 4 года назад
@@markschiavone8003 whilst you can get off the peg doors in frame, in this instance (and normal for UK builders) is that the glaziers come and survey structural opening once they are built and make the doors / windows to suit the openings. The reason Roger was annoyed and had to change the opening was because the bi folds were made to the full opening and they had disregarded his instructions to have the cill finish on a given mark. Roger could not have calculated the size as different glaziers might use different cills. I sympathise with Roger as you can be all over a job but variables are the enemy. When you give instructions you hope they have been understood correctly but if you over do it they complain you are telling them how to do their job.

Roger, I've had water coming in the back door, water coming in the front door, and through the roof. ......... Previous owner had some shody work done..... The back door is UPVC, I'm going to swap it for a nice timber door when I get the time, I've bodged it for now drilling new weep holes through the threshold and masticing the sides of the threshold, it's working well. I swapped the front door, it had this concete step with holes that the frame dropped into and a recess for the door to close against (obviously it opens inwards) which sounds nice from the perspective of drafts but was just a recipe for water ingress, I've had the frame out, new frame in, filled the holes in the step and set the new frame further forwards so the door is further forward and doesn't close into the recess in the step but is above it on the raised part of the step, got it done just in time for the recent storms and no water ingress! Now just into the loft the patch the ripped felt, hopefully that will stop the water running down the cavity until I can get on the roof in better weather to check the tiles..... This was flagged by the mortgage company as rising damp and this is why people think rising damp and damp treatment is a con, I don't dispute it exists but more of than not it's penetrating damp not rising damp.

That's a good idea for uPVC but you shouldn't need it for aluminium. If you do pack between the glass and lock remember to use a low or zero modulus silicone which won't eat away at the glass unit sealant. Also, if you do pack between the lock and glass then pack between the glass and plastic on the hinge side as well.

Hi Roger. You want to try the origin bifolds. They are amazing to work with and fit. The company I work for are a premium installer for them. We've been fitting them in the Thames Valley area for years. If your ever in the Reading area pop into our show room where we have 3 different sets on show and I'll show you some of the features that make them easier to fit and miles ahead of the competition. The problem you had with the ffl we avoid by using a specific survey form that shows all the threshold and cill dimensions and the head detail. Once the survey is completed a copy is emailed to all parties involved so everyone is working to the same details.

Care and pride Roger, it the 2 things that make a man a proper tradesman ... Would of expected them more likely been 10mm short so had wiggle room . Was a right cockup and no idea how they measure any door fitment well if don't know the sill measures :-/ anyway you put it right, serious ballache but you more more man and more knowledge because of it ... Keep up the good work 👍

So how did you manage to loose the 30mm from the brickwork coursing above the lintel

Good video. Very interesting about the toe-ing and heel-ing. Must admit I'd ask the fitters to come back to at least help rebuild the door

I did ask and I was even willing to pay for one of them to help me but they didn't return my call. As it was the tricky part was clicking those beads back in. I am glad I persisted with it, I hate having to ask people to rescue me.

How do you replace the rubber seal at the bottom part of the frame ? The one that the doors close onto.

Little tip always make sure the packers are the same depth as the glass because if u dont get the packer under both pains of glass will cause a crack. Always check the bi folds have track drainage as alot dont so you have to drill face drainage in yourself. To allow the water to run out of the track onto the cill Also with the gaskett spray glass cleaner on the glass wen ure pushing the gaskett in helps it to pop in much easier. And also wen glazing always place a 2mm packer on the bottom then pack the top then pack the 2 sides as you are able to get a few more mm in lift if required. Hope this also helps.

Toughned glass cracks easier than normal glass. tougned is stronger from the face but not the corners

All sealed units shatter again if a packer is not plaiced under both pains i have seen many doors. Bi folds. Patio doors. Conservatory doors front doors with cracks in the corners due to incorrect packing

I hate having trusted another "trade" with something, then having to redo a job myself, because they've ballsed it up. Recently been working on a job with contractors i've never used ( clients choice ) and the sparky drill straight through a 4" wall 4 times where the other side we'd had been just plastered and finished and had a 'window fitter' go through a ceiling one weekend, all of which we had to arrange to get repaired. Thats why i stick to people we know and trust, with quality workmanship.

And thats where we also have issue on who to hire. Not being in the trade and not knowing who to trust. Although guess like a lot of work. I'm in IT and a trust worthy tech but there are a lot of IT techs out there who'd rip you off.
