Good man, good words. I was looking for information about tents and camping - which I got, I hope everyone watches all the way through, As a middle aged man from the UK, I got an insight into how someone in the USA is feeling as anxious about the Covid crisis and the equality of everyone in society, no matter who they are are what colour they are. Well done.

FinerBub, those were some fine reflections about our current times. Well done! I benefited from that focus. So... on a separate topic I must clarify the importance of setting up a dry interior shelter. I've been backpacking for awhile (30+years) and still am learning new things all the time. The point of pitching the rainfly first to the footprint is not so the hiker him/her self stays dry, but far more importantly the inner mesh tent stays dry in the rain. In a hard rain the porous mesh lets in enough water to make the shelter into a shallow pool. Drying it out is not as easy as it sounds. Wet shelters are not fun and can be unsafe in cold weather! Meanwhile kudos to you for making the effort of the "interior" pitch. Reminded me of my few attempts.. with some practice it becomes much easier. (Don't know about "graceful" :) Thanks for your efforts and Stay strong. JD
@FinerBub
@FinerBub 3 года назад
Yeah I hear that. I'm sure I'd get better at setting it up from the inside with more practice. And don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with you about the importance of staying dry especially in cold weather. I guess I should have focused more of the video on my point about the cost, and why I was frustrated that a seemingly necessary piece of the tent is sold separately at such a high price. Lately I've been thinking a lot about how expensive it can be for people to pick up backpacking and other outdoor activities as a new hobby, combined with the sort of "be-careful-or-you-could-die" teaching approach coming from a lot of outdoor content creators. Not to say that those warnings shouldn't be taken seriously, the definitely should be, but then I think about an aspiring backpacker who has no prior knowledge or experience and how many people like that get deterred from even trying new outdoor activities because they are afraid that it wont be safe if they don't have or can't afford all of the best gear. And then I consider the fact that I've been using a $5 tarp with the tent for years (sometimes in heavy rain or even snow) before actually buying the matching footprint, which motivates me to want to share that experience with others and reassure them that it is possible, and doesn't take an expert, to camp comfortably in wet conditions without having to feel pressure to spend an extra $70 on an accessory that the company should really include with the purchase of a tent. Anyway, sorry for rambling on. I definitely appreciate the input, and I'm sure that by the time I've been backpacking for 30+ years I'll have had one or two more experiences that shape my point of view. Anyway, thanks again for commenting! I really appreciate the input and the kind words!
@leonpalnau6839

This is what I was going to say. I interpreted this feature as not something to keep me dry during setup (you're already in the rain and wet while unpacking the tent), but instead to allow me to keep the tent body and mesh dry. I would've still assumed I'd be connecting the body to the footprint from outside.

I am the cheapest person out ther eand I tried to find a piece of scrap Tyvek, but couldn't. There are Amazon & eBay makers that make ground cloths out of Tyvek, but they end up costing you half of the Big Agnes ground cloth. Besides being able to set them up in the rain, the #1 reason for me was that they keep water out of your tent's immediate area by being custom fit. Users said that it keeps your tent dry and that it was easy to clean & pack up afterwards and that's what mattered to me the most. Get a generic too small ground cloth and you got water under the tent. Too big and it acts like a water collection system and there's a pond right outside your door. I hated having to buy BA OEM ground cloth, but I thought I might as well since I already paid 4 bills for the tent itself. I held my nose and paid the $80 for it. Sometimes, you just gotta do it. Nobody buys a Corvette and has their tires replaced at Walmart.

One suggestion that I might have for you in setting up the rain fly first and then the tent inside would be that you open up the doors of the tent once you get it laid out and step inside so you're basically just rotating around the inside of the tent for most of the clipping. That way you're not getting tangled up. You'll be stepping on the floor inside the tent, rather than trying to avoid it and work around it. As with everything it takes practice but it beats tripping over yourself.

I think it might be a decent buy if you ever thought that you might want to save the weight and or space and not pack the actual tent body itself and just pitch the groundsheet, poles and rainfly. Makes a good system for modularity. Great vid keep it up.

I bought the Manzanares footprint for my copper spur ul2 for $40! Same size, better price. Fast fly set up takes practice, but it does keep your tent dry. Trying to make a polycro footprint with grommets, but it's hard to get the dimensions cut correctly because the footprint is not exactly rectangular.

If you can see the ground your camping on through the floor of your tent you absolutely need a footprint of some sort so it should be included. Ultralight is great, but I wish companies would stop catering to the weight weenies and just put a practical floor on their tent. I’m researching this tent and almost passed up your vid because of the length. I’m glad I watched the whole thing and I am subscribing. Not because of the tent stuff...

I just got a big Agnes footprint for my manzaneres hv sl 1 tent for $30 haha. I don’t know what the dimensions are but it might be worth looking at older footprints by discontinued tents with the same footprint dimensions. I looked at similar footprint sized tents currently being manufactured by big Agnes and they are $70. I agree they should include it but hey...life time warranty on not only their tents but also the footprint...kinda worth it. My entire tent setup with a footprint only weighs 3.3 lbs. and it cost me $270 with a lifetime warranty. Can’t beat that!

I think what you discussed is something many of us are feeling, and it's hard to articulate it because, as you said, it seems like it should be the obvious thing to do. I know for myself personally, I've really reflected on my own experiences and upbringing and looking back through the years with a more critical lens, you really start to notice the deeply ingrained institutionalized racism in our culture. There are so many 'jokes' and stereotypes that our culture is ok with and even those of us who would never consider ourselves to be racist, have used more than once in our lives. This movement isn't just about achieving parity and equality for all people, it's about how all of us need to work on bettering our communities and society as a whole. How we need to work hard to stamp out that deeply ingrained culture that makes so many racist things 'okay'. We all need to get involved in our political systems from the local town level all the way up the ladder and DEMAND better, and more importantly, hold our elected leaders accountable for their action (or inaction.) And once we begin to rebuild things, we all need to stay vigilant against these hateful things for future generations, never let our collective guards down again.

I wholeheartedly agree. Well said!

Systemic racism has gone down over the last few decades while systemic incarceration has gone up. The people most affected are in these communities plagued w/ prejudice disadvantages not long ago. Police force, & citizens rights have slightly different meaning in these areas. The private 'ALEC' group has been defining our criminal justice laws for many decades, comprised of Corporatist legislators & lobbyists. Many people make money on incarceration & the probation, fees & requirements that follow, at tax payer expense while keeping those individuals in perpetual poverty hole.

I disagree with your position that setting up inside isn't worth it. Sure, if its a drizzle I would just set it up the regular way. The problem is some of the rain is going to get in to the inside of the tent. If its just a drizzle, then its not that big of a deal. But if its a hard driving rain, your tent could be flooded before your done setting it up. Water doesn't evaporate meaningfully in a hard driving rain. It will stay wet for the rest of your trip. If you're the type of person that only camps during the summer, you're probably not going to deal with that issue. As a mountaineer, and someone who climbs year round, Its entirely possible I could set out on day 1 in clear skies, and end up in a heavy storm on day 2 or 3. With that said, I'm not paying 60$ for a tarp (I have the 1 person). Im looking at getting some tyvek for free from a construction site, and adding straps with grommets to the corners. Functionally the same thing, but costs $10.

Hi. Thanks for posting. Just a suggestion about keeping on topic. While I agree and sympathise with all you’re saying, perhaps put those thoughts into another video and tag it accordingly for those wishing to engage with you on that type of material. You may also want to ‘wear your heart on your sleeve’ a little less. Your clear disgust with the product and pricing really came through after the frustrating experience of producing the video inside a clearly hot tent. Some folk bought this so it might pay to have a little more empathy for your audience rather than inferring anyone buying this is an idiot. Anyway, all the best and stay safe.

This does not justify the practice of not including the groundsheet, but I think the reason is not what you think it is. It is an absurd how much it costs, but I think the real reason it is sold separately with these ultralight tents is because of weight. They want to shave the weight off because the UL tents are all about saving ounces.

Tell me, as a foreigner perceiving American politics as this black and white system where people can't advocate for individual issues, only one side of a coin or the other, I'm curious to know what political party you would support and why you would think that they are all virtuous and not all hypocrites and liars as well? Also since it appears that I did have your attention for twenty minutes or so before I upset you, what did you think about my thoughts on the Big Agnes Footprint? Do you think they align with my political views? And since we're just lumping topics together, I'm curious what you think about Elon Musk. He manages to upset a lot of so-called woke liberals as well as non-progressive conservatives. Which party do you land in? Given that there are clearly only two options... I'd throw your initial insult right back at you for essentially blaming me for the same thing that you did in your second comment but I don't know if it would make it through your own lack of education. I am sorry that I tricked you but I think it was for a good cause. I bet if we met in real life we'd have a lot more in common than you think and we might be able to have a more civil discussion about these kinds of things. Best of luck in all of your future interactions.
