This review is fantastic! I appreciate how thorough it is on all aspects of the tent. Definitely answered a bunch of questions I had about functionality that I could not find anywhere else!
Excellent review, this is on my shortlist. The net baskets and loops inside are very handy. My only dislike is it’s pitched inner first. What a pain having to do the whole review twice, it was worth it though.
I always bring wired headphones camping instead of wireless airpods so it makes a lot of sense to me that the storage areas have wire holes. With wired headphones it's 1 less thing that needs charging on a trip. And also less small items that can get lost.
Hi Behdad, Holiday... Mist you comment at that time. Now catching up on emails and comments. Next video... give me a week 😉. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
In case this helps someone, the main difference in weight between this and the regular model is the bikepack bag is 109g heavier, 132g vs 23g, so if packing just for hiking, change the bag or don't use one. The poles are 79g heavier, likely because of the extra ferrules needed. Cheers for the review.
Hi Surfearth, Thanks for the nice comment and sharing your thoughts and tip about the weight. Sometime I do, sometimes I forget.... Sorry. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Great review! I have the 1st generation, 1p Copper spur and want to point out, that in that size the foot end of the tent is much lower. And there is only 2 storm guide lines on the head end, which means it needs to be put head first in to the wind. But I guess that the pole system acts better as a spring that way on it. :D But I really have enjoyed it, the bigger storage pocket on the inside is just the best. Really appreciate your notes on the sustainability aspect as well!
Great video. I ordered the 2020 1P Copper Spur here in 2023. Compared to Nemos 2021 Dragonfly Bikepack Tent, which I have here, the rainfly buckles in as opposed to gromets that stick on the tent feet. Both look like great tents. I must decide on one. The fly on the Nemo does not go all of the way down, where I imagine the tent no doubt could blow a bit easier. It is nice to see out the back of the Nemo though & its vestibule is real nice. Wish I could keep both.
Hi Hans, Sorry for my late reply but I was on holiday and gave myself some real time off and thank you for the very kind words and the sub! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Good review! I am wondering how you would compare this tent to the msr hubba hubba nx. I am in doubt between these 2. The more delicate fabrics on the big agnes make me doubt it a bit and its wind resistance compare to the hubba. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
Hi Peter, Thanks for the compliment! The fabrics... they have proven ok with me. Yes, wind will make the fabric move around more than on the MSR. I have an NX ..... never made the review. I do prefer the big BA because of all the nice extra features and how it pitches. The NX is more windproof though. Hope this helps. Cheers, Gijs
Great video and review, I am looking at the 2-person version of this tent for backpacking. Do you think it will fit between the body and lid/brain of a 50l Osprey Atmos backpack? If so, do you think this would be a good place to carry/balance a tent when backpacking? Thanks
Hi Matthew, In what country and what circumstances? Mountains etc? Let me know and I'll get back to you. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
I just bought this tent. But I can't find the footprint for sale anywhere in EU. Hikerhouse is out of stock just like everyone else. Thanks for an awesome review
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Was thinking of buying a regular footprint for a UL3. Just the rectangular one, to protect the tent. Do you know if it fits? Have a great day 😅
Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Thanks so much for this fabulous review. I have a question I hope you can answer. I have the 2 person version. In the peg bag there are some spare guy ropes and 4 orange straps with velcro and a buckle. Do you know what these are for? Thanks Jason, Wales
Hi Jason, Nice question... I don't have a clue. Send me picture at infoAToutdoorguru.com AT = @. This is to prevent bots from getting to me 🙃. Cheers, Gijs
I wish you would have mentioned the material of the clips and also your impression of the poles. Both happen to be weak spots of the copper spur. I purchased a CS HV UL2 and one of the clips broke the first time I used the tent outdoors (they broke while it was standing and without any wind or pressure on them). I have read a couple of reviews on their website having the exact same experience.
That I didn't mentioned it is probably because it didn't draw my attention so nothing worth mentioning happend. I can't say it's a weak point if nothing is wrong with them (in this case). What happend in other cases.... it's hard to comment on since I don't know circumstances. I just used the tent like I use any tent. Sorry I can't shine more light here. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Ok good to know that you don't think they are weak points. I am kind of unsure now - I really like the tent, but the plastic material of those clips (that have an essential function for the tent and keep it all together) really make me question the tent´s durability.
I do understand your lack of confidence. I don't know how many BA with this clip are produced but I suppose if a lot go's wrong it is a big problem for them too and I do see a few cases but not ton's. You are talking of the clips that clip on to the poles? If so and a clip brakes it is fixable with a tie wrap for the time being.... I even found replacement clip online. But fact: clips do brake... also at other brands. Mostly because of cold or standing on them when pitching and braking down.
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews thanks for your answer - yes I was talking about the clips connecting inner and outer tent as well as the poles. What broke was the ring part for the poles - without having stood on them or having them exposed to any adverse circumstances. It broke while I was laying inside the tent. I have read a few reviews that had the same experience (broke on first use). I have ordered replacement clips already - Big Agnes was supportive and also said they experienced some issues with the clips. I just am unsure now if and how to use the tent. But good to know it is not something you have noticed as a problem so it might have been just a production failure that sometimes happens and mostly doesn’t. I really hope though they will replace the plastic with something more durable in the future.
Sometimes things go wrong... I like metal clips or small carabiners (2/3 cm, the not for climbing ones ;-)). You could give it a try before you go out.
Hi LifeOWrylee, Thanks for the kind words 😉. It is this one row.bioliteenergy.com/products/solarpanel-5-plus Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi Skep, With a little bit of effort I think this should be possible but only when you have the footprint. You need the footprint to pitch the fly without the inner tent. Or... maybe it also works if you push the pole ends in the ground. If I have some time in the coming days I'll give it a try and get back to you. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Fantastic review as always I’m interested in this tent but what would you choose over/instead of this and if you would go with this tent what pegs and footprint would you buy? (Large vestibule foot print or standard footprint?) thanks again!
Hi Jason, Thanks for the kind words 🙏. I would buy the large footprint and some nice MSR pegs in a mix of groundhog and Core. Does this answer your questions? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Are the shorter bikepacking tent poles any less durable than regular sized poles such as the regular Copper Spur HV UL3? I am worried about the more shorter pole sections will break easier.
Hi SP, I don't know. I did not test one against the other on breaking. In general: I never break poles unless when I accidentally step on one. So... don't worry about. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi Bombingbloke, Sorry for the late reply but I am traveling and not always online. PFC free? Good question. BA does not write anything on this the tent fabric but they do state that the taping on the seams is free from PFC so I assume that the tent is too. Otherwise... what is the point. I'll try to figure this out in detail but again... I am traveling. This is also quite interesting: www.bigagnes.com/sustainability I hop this helps a bit. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi Tom, Thank for the thumbs up! Well... they know. Happens quite often with tent. And thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Leuke video weer Gijs!
Hi Leung, Both very nice tents, different price. Depending on where and weather I would make a different choice. For the worse conditions.... Allak! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Precies: meteen overdoen. Naar huis. Slapen. Vreselijk zen dus. Groet, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews En klaar was Gijs. .. een nieuw begip. :-) Maar alle respect hoor! :-) Groet weer, Onno. :-)
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews I bought a Big Agnes Blacktail 3 Hotel Bikepack. A bit more space than this model. 3.5kg but very spacious. Hope I will like it!! ❤
Top? Hard so say.... what for? Trekking three or more weeks, weekend, winter summer? I need some more to go on. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews let's say Backpacking, week at a time , 3+ seasons and as this is under the copper spur video - how did you score it? - what are the competitors to this tent. would you prefer the copper spur or something else in the same ball park?
Groet, Gijs
@@bram2254 I don’t think you can go wrong with either tent. But I would say Hilleberg is the more superior product. I wish you luck with your choice. I’m sure the Hilleberg will last a lifetime.
Hi! Thanks for a great review! A question; is the footprint a standard Big Agnes footprint or is it something else? I found that part that extrudes the tent very useful and would like to get a similar one. Thanks!
Hi Pnift, The footprint is designed for the Copper Spur HV UL3 and the mtnGLO. They share the same size. You'll find it here: www.bigagnes.com/Copper-Spur-HV-UL3-mtnGLO-Footprint-2020
In my mail I see this question: "Outdoorguru which one you think better for motorcycle camping where weight and size matters ?" I don't see it in the RU-vid comments... Or is a comment on someone else? Sometimes I am lost....
At 3 minutes into the video I explain why... Shorter poles than the regular tents and that makes the tent more compact in packsize and for bikepacking. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
