G'day and welcome to another episode!!
This one is for the real keen skinny water aussie bass anglers!! Those who, like me, can't wait for the winter go be over to continue chasing these magnificent australian natives.
People frequently ask if, during winter, there are any decent bass left up in the freshwater parts of the creeks and rivers...well, the numbers are certainly reduced when compared to outside of spawning season, however some bass do not spawn every season and they decite to remain up in the fresh.
For those who don't know, australian bass need saltwater to spawn, this is why the majority of the population of mature bass in each system travel down the salt at the end of autumn (using the last rains of the season to make their way down) and remain there during the entire winter (closed season) for them to come back up to the fresh using the first rains of spring.
There is always a debate about the ethical side of chasing bass during closed season...I will explain the rules and then I will get into the ethical side of thisngs:
The rules in NSW are that bass aren't to be targeted BELOW ANY DAM OR WEIR during the closed season that extends from May 1 until August 31. Therefore in NSW there can be significant parts of freshwater sections of rivers and creeks where bass aren't to be argeted during closed season.
The rules in QLD are thsat bass aren't to be targeted IN TIDAL WATERS (this is in any part of the creeks or rivers with tidal influence or directly connected to it) between June 1 and August 31. This, together with the fact that in QLD there is mnimal to no rain during that period of time, leaves the bass that cam down to the salt 'stuck' in there until the first rains of the spring.
For this reason, since I am in QLD, when I chase aussie bass in winter, I make sure I am upstream enough from the salt (with several sets of nearly dry rapids, causeways, etc) to ensure that I can't affect any bass that decided to spawn during the current season.
I hope everyone gets to enjoy this episode!!

Such a productive little session! Good to see some chunks in there feeding up over the winter

Thanks mate, yes, similar to last winter when we discovered that place…being the biggest pool of the system (outside the brackish stretch) I believe all the population in that creek that doesn’t travel all the way down the salt sits in there for the whole winter

Awesome video Ramon! I was with you all the way when you sighted that big bass next to the kayak mate, how good are those moments hey. Pure happiness. That's what it's all about I reckon is the excitement and joy of landing those special fish. I was exactly the same last weekend when I got that big sooty, I was by myself but had a smile from ear to ear. Nothing compares to that in my opinion. That was a great video as always mate and thanks for sharing 👍🎣

Thanks Jake, you’re totally right, it’s all the grinds that make these special ones even more special! And, as usual, they always come when you less expect them! Your soot was an absolute beast too, I’d be over the moon with that!! Thanks for the support mate!!

@@StephenTaylor-gy8mp thanks Stephen, I’m doing my best to get some time on the water during this busy period…I was lucky to find myself amongst some good action the other day. I’ve got some flathead action on the pipeline for next video if I don’t manage any more bass 👍🏽

Love your videos mate, good to see I’m not the only crazy person paddling up skinny creeks on my own looking for these fish. Bring on 1st September!

Haha thanks mate, yeah I can’t wait either. Winter is tough but if you put the time, especially in the arvos, you do find the odd one that still remains up in the fresh. Problem is that I struggle to get time for myself in the arvos…glad you’re enjoying the videos 🙂

I usually refrain from statements about any being my favourite video, but I think this one could be "The One". Of course, I need to declare some conflict of interest in this contest, but I was stoked to see your genuine joy after scoring that trophy creek bass. Congratulations mate and I hope that there will be many more to come over the next season! 💪 💪💪🔥🔥🔥

BTW, I would love to hear the uncut part where the kayak floated away with your stuff 😂. Another good catch in this video 👏 ✌️

Thanks mate, I think the genuine joy came from a mix of reasons, first of all because I wasn’t really expecting to see much action due to the cold but also because I just couldn’t believe it when I realised it was one of the biggest fish of the season just when I’m fishing with the lightest rod 😄 Yes, there was some cursing said when I turned around after taking the photos of the fish and I saw the yak away from the bank 😅 I’m glad I had the rod…thanks again for the rod and lures mate 👌🏼🙏🏼

Damn time-lapse mode. I feel your pain. Pretty sure the joker is a DWU variant, same as the first BFS reel I ever bought. Love the look of them

@@yep.fishing thanks mate, yes, im glad when I changed batteries then both cameras ran well and the best action was captured…that’s why it is handy running 2 cameras… I’m not sure about similarities with the DWU. The brake system is very different and despite only having had a DWU on my hands for a very short time a year or so ago, I do believe that the Joker feels more solid. It would be good asking Kelvin who has both
