Big Bear Eagle ~Heartbreaking News! Ravens Eat Jackie & Shadow's Egg! Jackie Returns Too Late 1.7.21 

Jan 7th 2021 ~ Shadow's vocals have been heard close by tonight at 5:17:43 and Jackie answered him while she was lying on the nest. Shadow is fine and is doing normal eagle things and will return to the nest in his own eagle time. Jackie is on the nest tonight sleeping. Jackie and Shadow are a strong couple and will overcome this tragedy and loss of of their egg and will hopefully have another opportunity with a second egg laid in a couple of days!

I can’t even stand to watch this....the way Jackie continues to look for her egg is heart wrenching.

Came across this in 2024, as I currently watch Jackie still incubating her non vital eggs, than to see this video makes it all even more sad. As much as we tell ourselves it is just nature's way, it still hurts to watch. Hoping to watch Jackie and Shadow try again and all their hard work to pay off.

This is absolutely heartbreaking.Nothing about their lives are easy.I pray she lays another.

Ravens are neither nasty nor cunning. The eagles prey on other animals too and most of us humans eat eggs. That raven fed its young and the juvenile was learning skills necessary for life as a raven.

Hard to watch, especially Jackie's reaction is heartbreaking 😔

After having watched her cry out while passing the egg makes seeing it destroyed and eaten is truly tragic! I think that there are very few bald eagle eggs that have been laid in the world that have been mourned over as the ones that we watch over!

This is so sad. No babies last year. I hope she lays more and they thrive.

I am so sad for them 😢 but at least they didn't get too attached to it since it was less than 24 hours. Prayers for egg 2 & 3 over the next couple of days for this pair 🙏 🤞❣

This is so sad. Two years ago, the two never left the eggs - one was always there to protect them. But, I did not watch the nest 24/7. If I remember right, Jackie would call for Shadow. I could be wrong.

Oh no.😥 Jackie's expression 😖 I hope Shadow is ok and is home soon - he didn't even get to see his egg. Maybe that's a good thing... It is heartbreaking that they've lost their first egg this season, especially after last year's tragedy of both their eggs being non-viable. With a little luck they will produce one or maybe even two(🤲) more healthy eggs within the next 3 or 4 days, and raise to fledging with little or no 9serious complications. People all over the world are rooting for you with tear-stained faces but hopeful heart and proud spirits, Jackie and Shadow. May our collective love and energy soothe and comfort you dearest Jackie. I knew those ravens were gonna be a problem...they been hanging around nest alot these past weeks. Sad news for us southern calif eagle fans!! Sorry for the loss to the Big Bear community. Unfortunately a lot of sadness seems to haunt this nest. Very sad right now!! A bit puzzled as to why egg was left alone...usually only one adult gone at a time. The circle of life can be brutal...appears this is an adult still feeding a juvie.

When I first learned about J&S from another Eagle chat, I thought I would read up on these courageous eagles. Its quiet the harrowing story about Ricky-Lucy, & now Jackie-Shadow. Im blown away by the hardships these two eagles have been through and yet J&S are forging forward. Its truly a miracle of nature at its finest. Im humbled by watching these brave eagles.

Geez I am deeply saddened by this tragic event. And called for backup yet. They seem quite hesitant. I know its nature but darn the birds even go thru it!!! Super sad for Jackie and shadow. Hopefully they can recoup. Heartbreaking to see her so upset. ❤

It's heartbreaking watching this and clear we had a breakdown of communication between Jackie and Shadow. If Shadow didn't know he had an egg then he wouldn't be there to relieve Jackie. We know that Jackie can't incubate on her own had no choice but to leave. All the hard work she went through was lost. We may see a repeat of this if Shadow does not come to the nest during or after when Jackie lays egg#2, I pray we do not have a repeat as it's too difficult to watch. Sorry this happened Lady Hawk and sorry to all the viewers, supporters and everyone who loves our J&S💔

I just read the details regarding Jackie and Shadow's egg. I just can't watch their heartbreak. Lady Hawk, you watch them more than anyone and do a great job reporting to all of us- my heart goes out to you as well as Jackie and Shadow.

That was a long time to leave the nest unattended. Why didn't Shadow incubate while Jackie was gone?

There is a popular Brazilian song whose chorus says that sadness has no end but happiness does. After watching these sad scenes, this chorus played over and over in my mind, like a record that fails on the record player. I'm deeply saddened by the loss of the priceless life that was inside the egg and by the loving parents Jackie and Shadow, who worked so hard to conceive this precious life that was so tragically gone. It seems that ravens do not leave our beloved Jackie and Shadow alone. I hope that the hope of a fresh start will always accompany the life of this beautiful couple of eagles. May life and love overcome the sadness that has come over us with this irreparable loss!! 😪😢💔💔

I have not seen Shadow around for a few days I'm afraid he might be somewhere hurt because he's normally right there when she has her eggs. The Ravens have been scoping out for quite a while they've been waiting for that egg also. I wonder if they ganged up on Shadow

Oh no...those Ravens know when to catch Jackie (and Shadow) off guard and are targeting them. Seeing Jackie looking down for her egg...heartbreaking indeed. Hopefully, Jackie can lay another egg but she & Shadow are going to need to stay very close to Nest and coordinate breaks where no one leaves their Nest Home unattended. Wish they would only visit nests and leave the eggs alone! But we know Ravens won't do that.

Why does she get up and leave the egg unattended? She did it twice that I saw💔 it was heartbreak on this nest last season too😪

Is that raven feeding bits of egg it its offspring? Or is that a “food gift” for its mate? (I know very little about ravens, other than they are wicked smart and know how to take advantage of any situation...)

In spite of our affection for the eagles we should also remember the ravens are fellow creatures too. It’s hard to watch raven’s grief when their eggs are snatched by raccoons.

Jackie needs to find another male eagle. Shadow has never been a good father. He has never brought food in like he should. Last year Jackie had to go and leave the Eaglets before to get food for them because Shadow didn't bring any. Jackie needs to kick Shadow out, he is not mature enough to do what is necessary. This is horrific & devastating news in 2021 January! I can’t bare to think how Jackie feels... and even Shadow didn’t even know! 😳😢😭 Jackie couldn’t believe it herself... her mouth sound she had made...mourning of her lost alone.... it’s so sad; she made this sweet sound while having her baby. How she didn’t call for Shadow when she did before, he came so quick.... LadyHawk, how could have this happened....I hope Shadow and Jackie stays at the nest each day alternating with watchful eyes! Ravens came so quick less than 5 seconds after she left...

Looking closely as the shell disappeared I saw no evidence of any eaglets. That, coupled with J leaving the nest and then S not returning to fend off the Ravens makes me believe J and S now realize the eggs are not viable. Just a take on it and hope it's true. Can't stand the thought there were eaglets in there.
