Just a quick updated review of our small portable solar panel by the company Big Blue! It’s still holding up after 3 years of use everyday. Sitting outside in the sun and having our dogs play on it as well so we are pretty impressed. Definitely will be purchasing again when it gives out completely!

There is no better advertisement for a product than seeing it all dirty, faded, ripped/dented but still functionally working. I absolutely love long term reviews like this, where we can see that the product has been extensively used as intended, and both the negatives and positives are mentioned. Also it's valuable info for the company too, so they can see where to improve for future iterations (if they care enough).

That's how all stuff should be used ... until they are completely ripped ! High quality product! Great video!

Thanks for this honest review. I wish more people would do reviews on products a few years down the track. That's the stuff you REALLY need to know about when you're considering buying a product, not these "I just bought this product isn't it great?" videos. (The worst imo are those unboxing videos - I get that the person is excited but what makes them think everyone else will be??)

if the individual panels are wired in parallel, which I think they are, you are losing out on a lot power, because the bottom panels is angled so badly and this affects the max voltage of all the panels. recommend putting them on cardboard or something to even them out. might even be 10-20% more power

Hi..I just bought this solar charger, and I'm trying to figure out if it's on sun without plug in any device if it's generate energy and source is, so I can like small solar charger just charge and then use energy, or it works only if its something plug in? Thank you
@ParadiseOnPennies
@ParadiseOnPennies 2 года назад
Only if something’s plugged in. You’d need a battery pack to store the charge to use later.

Every review I see, absolutley nobody talks about what battery they are charging, how long it takes to charge the battery. Its like everyone who bought one of these swore a secret oath to not discuss actual charging performance or batteries used or how long it takes to charge em.

I have the 28W bigblue without the digital meter. I used it on a 2 month bicycle ride from California to Missouri during the summer months. I used it to charge an Anker 20,000 mAh battery that I used to charge my phone & bicycle lights. If I remember correctly, it took about 15 hours to fully charge a depleted 20,000 mAh battery. I might be off by a little bit. Hope that helps. I really like the solar panel. Much better than a dynamo hub. I was able to charge on days that I wasn't riding. On riding days, I strapped it across my rear panniers. For those 2 months, I never used a wall plug & rough camped the entire time.

If you had a new 160w panel out in the sun (while you are on a walk) it probably wouldn't be there when you got back. Having multiple smaller panels (which aren't worth stealing) are probably a better idea. Great video.

I bought a 28W one of these, to add some charging capacity in addition to a similar 20W Sokoo portable panel I bought maybe 3 years ago. I was hoping it would perform at least as well as that older, lower power, panel. It did not. So I returned it to Amazon for a refund. I use these to charge a 10,000 mAh battery pack. In a day of constant sunlight, this panel couldn't even top off that battery bank from like 50% charged (as the only load plugged into the panel). Under the same (good/steady) sunlight conditions, I tried plugging in my pixel smartphone (as the only load). My phone charge chime chime would continuously ring on and off, because current was too low. That didn't happen with my older panel. It couldn't even seem to handle the very small load of my old Pebble Time smartwatch (charge cycling on and off, in strong, constant, sunlight). So I don't know . . . Maybe I got a defective unit (electronics). Maybe these high-efficiency cells are EXTREMELY sensitive to anything but absolutely perfect sunlight conditions. Very disappointing when folks seem to be giving these good ratings.

Man, that’s too bad! Thanks for that info. I just haven’t had any issues like this with mine. It charges a large Jackery battery bank fully over the day. I also get charge even when it’s not full sun. As far as a small battery bank like a 10k or even a smartphone, like an hour of sun will charge them fully. I do think it’s possible that you got a faulty one, like you said? Hopefully that’s not a common occurrence. I was planning on getting another Big Blue once this one goes out, since I’ve had good luck with it. Here’s hoping the 2nd one is just as good. I’ll bring an update when the time comes, but I’m trying to ride out the current panel as long as I can… 🤞

Another thought..sometimes the cords give me trouble. The phone will toggle between charge/not because the cords are such junk. Not saying that’s your issue but something to consider. Too bad so many things are made to fail.

@@ParadiseOnPennies Yes, I am aware of the (surprisingly?) varying quality of USB cords. I have good cords. But anyway I used the same cord on the 3 year old 20W Sokoo panel, and it outperformed this 28W one (with no constant cycling with low loads). Actually, I was using the short USB cord which came with the Big Blue for some of my testing. So maybe that's also junk, like the panel. 🙂 I'm not positive what's going on. Maybe bad QC. Maybe they had to go with a charge regulator chip substitution, due to the current chip shortage. I also often suspect that sometimes sellers/manufacturers use high quality components for their initial offerings, but then downgrade once they've built up a lot of great product reviews. Perhaps they couldn't sustain a good margin with the quality components (maybe the supplier raised prices) or they just decided to try and cut corners, to try and make more money. It just seems like often the steady, super high, ratings are often from earlier raters, and the lower ratings seem to be more skewed to be from more recent ones. Anyway, I appreciate this review, as it is valuable to find how something has stood the test of time. Often early ratings are not valuable, as they don't give a good idea of longevity. But it will naturally be less relevant to current purchases if there is a significantly different level of quality for the latest units.
